    Animation is a bit misleading. A combination pill containing Emtricitabine and Tenofovir DF is taken daily for HIV PrEP. Those 2 drugs don't block HIV from attaching or fusing with the cell. Attachment is inhibited by Maraviroc. FUsion is inhibited by EnFUvirtide. Therefore, HIV will still enter these CD4+ T helper cells unlike what's shown in the animation. But once HIV fuses with the cell, Emtricitabine and Tenofovir DF will prevent it from replicating (by competitively inhibiting HIV reverse transcriptase at the active site, therefore preventing the conversion of viral RNA to viral DNA).

      @scottseptember1992 8 лет назад +2

      No problem. However, there is research being done on attachment inhibitors like Maraviroc as an option for PrEP, so the drug mechanism in this animation might just end up being right after all in that context lol

    So I’m a bit confused. Does does these meds protect the CD4T cell or does it disable the HIV virus cell cause those are two different things. From what I’ve read, it “corrupts” the virus cell in a way that prevents it from replicating once attached to immune system cell as opposed to protecting the immune system cell itself.

    • @scotscub76
      @scotscub76 2 года назад

      But by doing that it is protecting the immune cell also

    • @millarkoliver918
      @millarkoliver918 Год назад

      When HIV infects a T cell, it has an ability to take over the replication mechanisms within creating copies of itself.
      When PrEP is taken on a daily basis, this ability is actually halted.
      It’s the equivalent of putting in a faulty cartridge into the photocopier. The ability for HIV to replicate is halted.
      From there the defective HIV ‘copy’ becomes stuck within the cell and is not able to escape.
      At this point when the cell dies the HIV dies with it. Our healthy immune system can remove the cell along with the HIV which is trapped inside.

    • @krivetamico8862

      HIV will die without establishing an infection if it can't take over the cells that PrEP is protecting. But say you aren't taking PrEP regularly enough or you stop for a while and get infected while your cells are not PrEP protected...in that case you don't have protection on board and HIV could establish an infection. BUT HIV does not hang around waiting for a long time- it gets "processed [killed off]" by the body pretty efficiently.

      The HIV virus (like any virus) needs cells to infect a host. Of course, every human has cells, therefore we are susceptible to HIV. Like shown in the video, PrEP will make “shields” on our cells, therefore not letting the virus attach, enter, and invade our cells. Now to answer your question, the virus stays in the body for up to 7 days after it has entered. If you continually take PrEP, the virus will eventually die off in the body (well killed by our immune system) since it doesn’t have any “available” cells to infect. Thanks for the post. That is one of the things people on PrEP feel- like they are taking action to protect their sexual health. For different people, different kinds of action will be more or less attractive. PrEP is one of a few options that can be used. We did want to clarify that people living with HIV may be taking one pill a day, but they would not take a PrEP pill- right now only Truvada has an indication with the FDA and Truvada alone is not enough to control HIV infection once it is established. There are one-pill-a-day regimens but they have several kinds of drugs in that one pill. PrEP taking once HIV infected will not control HIV and can lead to resistance. HIV treatment regimens that are less than every day are under development but right now, there are no regimens available for HIV treatment that are not every day dosing.

HIV takes months to appear in tests, so God forbid you acquire it a day after you got tested, it will still show negative. Remember, the way virus tests work is by detecting antibodies against a certain infection. The body takes months to make these antibodies, therefore it may not show in tests right away.

      Thanks for the comment. You are correct that there are now single-tablet regimens to treat HIV. These are fixed dose combination medications where three and even four different HIV medications are made into one tablet. So, it's one tablet but it has several medications in it. The PrEP pill only has 2 medications in it - not all the ones needed to effectively treat HIV. PrEP alone will not treat HIV properly.
      Thanks for bringing up this important point!

      Tauresa- The comment seems to be a little too simple-- there are certainly many personal reasons that someone would want to use PrEP. We can't assume that people are choosing between prevention methods and some people prefer combined prevention strategies.

Apparently, prep turns t-cells into t-400 killer robot cells. I'm looking into this to see if it's potentially effective against a larger variety of auto immune situation that it's not advertised for....Krohns? Lupus?... I don't know, but would love to.

      Yeah but it costs 2000 dollars per month(70 dollars a pill) by the most famous company truvada. They don’t allow generics(same drug but different company like Coca Cola and Pepsi)to take over like In Australia that charge only 6 dollars a pill. The funny part is Alexandra Oscario Cortez(a US state representative) called out Truvada and destroyed them for overcharging the American people since the reach for this drugs was from Federal goverment funds(our fucking tax money) and they charge us super high on a pill that was discovered on our money. So republicans how do you defend this.
