In 2023 there were nearly 40 million people living with HIV. Some 30.7 million of them receive antiretroviral treatment. Despite recent advances in preventing infections, more than a million people are expected to become newly infected in 2024. More than 600,000 will die of HIV/AIDS.
But a handful of people have now been cured, thanks to recent breakthroughs in treatment.
We speak with experts who first identified HIV/AIDS about the progress in countering the disease. We investigate new therapies that exploit the HIV-resistant genetics of donated stem cells, or prevent HIV infections in the first place. And we hold heartfelt conversations with HIV survivors who are growing their own healthy families and engaging with the community to promote HIV/AIDS awareness.

I can't help but feel that the progress has been incredibly slow for the 43 years since 1981. It took full 15 years to come up with a relatively stable treatment in 1996, too late for many.
Yet they find a cure for covid because it took many businesses and hinder the rich to make more money

@@jorgevillaran3748 actually, it is far more complicated than you think. My brother is a doctor and the way he explained it to me was the virus is one of the most intelligent ones to exist.. And no matter if you develop a vaccine or a drug. If you don’t keep taking it on regular basis, it will mutate and adapt to it.. hence creating a drug that can stop it from mutating and and adapting is hard but I am sure we are close to it now with the technology

Bless them for all the great work and advancements they are making happen. I'm one of the lucky ones, but staying very very safe for several decades , I had give up a large part of my youth to stay safe. Born too early, *but hope for the future, of course. Always a price to pay in these things.

Hoping for the cure
Always nice to hear hopeful news of a cure, but will it, for real? It’s always ‘closer to a cure’ as a victim of this illness because of very bad people deliberately spreading it to me, I and many people really wish to hear ‘here is the cure’ instead of ‘closer to a cure’ again and again, it keeps us hopeful, yes, but wait is painful and hopes just keep getting dashed 😢
