  • While we're all on lockdown here in the UK, and recently having to change the radiator, I decided to remove the whole front end (long nose caravelle) I removed the front wings the front bumper and the grills. My next job with be blanking the egr valve.

The joys of T4 ownership. Thanks for the video Twiggs! great job! I've gotta pop my LH fender/wing off to remove a dodgy aftermarket antenna someone installed on the van during a prior owner's watch. Know I know to fix up the surface rust while in there.

No worries mate 🤙 unfortunately the problem with the older vans it’s hard to get one unmolested

Aha! ................... Brilliant, not seen that before ...................... The bit where you used a heat gun to 'release' the lower wing. Clever ; )
I've seen a few other vids on RUclips but they never show that bit ( a section in a video that' missing usually means they had an issue, so they edited it out! ), good idea actually the 'heat gun trick'.
I've always known that there was some sort of adhesive behind there, so not wanting to remove my wing ( for the exact same reason you have ), for fear of damaging it. Now I can, knowing what's behind there.
And yes, all the leaves and crud that builds up over time, will remain damp thus rusting the wing even quicker. A job I'll do this summer I think.
    Thanks Matt ; )

Hey Turk, thanks it’s always nice to hear positive feedback on the work I’ve done. I was struggling a bit to get it off, I just randomly thought if I get it warm if night go soft and make it easier which it did 👍
I need to take it off again so I can run a hose/pipe from the top down, to drain the water and prevent the build up of leaves and dirt.

@@TwiggsT4 You can actually buy a 'plug and tube' kit instead of making your own ....................
      Take a look at 'Joel's Stuff' T4 channel > ruclips.net/video/1wGyCDln7jY/видео.html
What did you use as an adhesive to reattach the wing? d'you think that Sikaflex is OK?
Like you I have an Induction kit installed, so I don't have to faff-about removing the airbox on the offside. Seems to be a pretty straight forward job.
Another job for the summer ................. the list is growing! : )

I found it was better to use the heat gun on the inside, get all the bolts and screws off so the wing is loose, pull the wing out at the top and poke the heat gun inside . You are then the heating the mastic more directly ......and less chance of blistering your paint. Also because the wing is gently pulled outward you can "feel" when the mastic is softening and the wing starts coming away .

Bloody T4 ownership is a never ending preemptive maintenance programme. I say that as I own one. I do like it but if your thinking of getting one just know that they rust like crazy and you will be spending money on it.

I have a 2002 T4 TDI, these vans were never designed to last 20+ years , they were tradesmens' work horses to be used and abused and in the scrap yard after about 12 years .

how you doing twiggs can i have some info please can i change the valve stem seals without tacking the head off

    • @TwiggsT4
      @TwiggsT4  2 года назад

All good ta, you? Not something I would recommend, personally it’s head off because you have to remove the camshaft, lifters, then the spring and collets which hold the valves shut, the valve could fall into cylinder, even then if you could change the stem seals, you wouldn’t be able to hold the valve shut whilst trying to refit the spring and collets.
