    After tinkering with our CRF300L cosmetically, we wanted to try and push it a bit more in an effort to squeeze even more power out of it. Will our years of building proven racebikes hold over or is this bike a case of "you get what you pay for"?

  • @mollygrubber

    All the armchair engine performance experts in the comments lol. Guys pay attention - a 4hp gain on a 150hp motor is negligible. However, 4hp on a 27hp motor is 15%. Add to that improving the throttle response and also (probably more importantly) the power to weight ratio with the 6 or 7 pounds lighter exhaust system. It does make a difference, but you still have to be cognizant of what this bike was designed to do, ie. it's *not** a 350EXC.

      I don't know why you guys all think that a multi billion dollar automotive company that puts billions of dollars into vehicle R&D just leaves piles of horsepower on the table to be grabbed up with a pipe and some ECU fiddling.😂😂😂

    • @samleary2733
      @samleary2733 Год назад +7

      @@phantomshtter I don’t think anyone expects “piles” of hp gains but manufacturers are forced to leave fairly accessible performance on the table in order to meet emissions standards. A pipe and tune is most of what is needed to get that performance back. This bike won’t make 40hp but it could get pretty close to 30. Doesn’t sound like a big deal but every bit matters on these smaller bikes and they are cheap enough that it’s still makes sense to some.

      We are at the end of the project Steve. We played a bit with some components on the intake side, but found this bike pretty resistant to further bolt-on performance part response. With marginal results to heavy effort, we decided to go on to the next bike in this realm to keep things fresh. On the flip side, we are working out a racing R7 package, and refreshing the SS 400. The SB 400 is also going to be worked out soon. Then the ZX4R arrives. We are keeping pretty busy so the 300 project had to come to an end .

      You essentially need to remove the velocity stack, enlarge the airbox hole, and install one from the CBR300R to gain any power with an exhaust.
      The CBR300R cams also make a huge difference. I picked up torque and HP through the entire rev range with all of those mods paired with a 550 Performance tune.

      Nah, we aren't. For this bike we had to go with Power Vision to flash the ECU. That costs 200 dollars per ECU just for the license to get into ECU. So with our work added to it the cost would be over 300 dollars per ECU. We decided that cost to benefit ratio was not right for it to become a service we offer.

Our approach was basically to see what is possible with a quick parse at full open with fueling and timing. Since this bike prooved to be a slug and have not much more to offer off the bat, we decided to move on to projects where it makes more sense to spend our time, and leave this platform to the 550 guys.

      I would say that unless you have changed cams and.or ported the head, there is little to be gained. If I spend a day or two fine tuning it with just exhaust and some intake mods, we can see a little gains. You just have to weigh that against what that costs, and then you can judge if it is worthwhile to you.

      Looked like almost 4hp to me at peak. That's almost 15% power gain. Plus the loss of several pounds of stock "muffler fat" to further improve power to weight ratio. I'd say it's a worthy mod, if you are willing to spend the $. Me, it's staying stock. I like a quiet bike and so do my neighbors and their sleeping babies :)
