  • Are you playing the Industry game or the Indie game? One approach results in much more fans, but a longer path to profitability. The other focuses on super fans and making money, but the audience size is much less.

    I’ve met indie artists who chose sync licensing route and make six figures and they are not famous.

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 месяца назад

      Yeah theirs almost a 3rd option of people who don't bother focusing on being an artist, and instead just focus on everything else. Whether thats sync, session work, sample packs, beats, live musician etc.
      Sync stuff can be very hard to get into, but when you get rolling it can be incredibly lucrative.

    I got a question I been watching your videos and I used your strategy. I’m finally getting streams but some countries are still a dollar, should I remove them ?

    • @AndrewSouthworth
      @AndrewSouthworth  4 месяца назад +1

      Usually I won't bother removing countries because FB will optimize on their own around countries that perform better. It's very rare I go in and remove countries to try and improve performance, less than 1% of the time.

      @@AndrewSouthworth thank you so much, over time the campaign has been optimizing. I MUST SAY, I used your last videos and on my hypeddit I have an conversion percentage of 16%. In 16 days I’ve gotten 90 Conversions with an average of $1.16 per conversion but it’s getting cheaper. Earning 201 Streams, 64 listeners, 32 playlist adds, 37 saves ! My listener/save ratio is 57.82 % which is good. And it’s getting me pushed to release radar this week so this is a good sign algorithmically !!!!!!!!!!!
      Thank you Andrew 🔥

    On point. The indie game is about deep connections, cultivating die hard fans and finding ways to monetize them.

    It’s really interesting to see someone pose the 2 sides to this and actually admit that you can’t really focus on both at once as an independent solo artist. The majority of music promotion discourse revolves around the industry side and sort of acts like everyone should be a jack of all trades and do the indie side as well. I’d definitely like more videos exploring the indie side of promotion and how to do that successfully

    It would seem that going corporate/mainstream first and then boutique/bespoke second would be the logical progression, for if you obtain the resource of fame, that enables you to create enough of a base to have some fanatic followers of means who would then either sponsor your future efforts through large NFT purchases or however and thus push your career further. Trying to create a tight knit group of small followers who pay large sums without the social proof of widespread fame appears difficult, EG - why would someone want to pay 5K to meet Aaron Peta back stage (who the hell is he?!) instead of Taylor Swift or Nikki Sixx, and also it's pretty hard to leave a large legacy or footprint on the wider base of general pop culture for posterity if you only sold music to a fanbase 1000 people, and isn't that the reason we're making music in the first place?

    Love the take Andrew - I’d say for me it’s the industry artist for sure. I like getting more eyeballs on my stuff and just started learning how to make viral content on socials so going to try that soon. Also love the idea of running ads on Spotify. It is more surface level for sure - I try to continuously thank my supportive fans from time to time via DMs, texts or calls so they know they’re appreciated - I understand it’s a bit surface level though and sometimes people drop off for sure, which can be a little discomforting. Overall, I am able to trek through it though. Selling merch and building super fans sounds way too sleazy for me personally, at least until I’ve made it BIG time. So yeah, you hit my persona spot on!

      Thanks! It's funny, a lot of the indie people find the industry approach sleazy or uncomfortable. Different strokes for different folks I guess!

    We're very small, very niche, but we don't perform live (our followers are worldwide anyway) or have enough followers to sell merchandise. So, we mostly play the Industry Game according to this way of looking at things. We are in that group, I guess, that tries to do both. This is an interesting concept to think about but I suspect many artists won't fit into either category.

    I think my goal is to get as many people as possible, then grow the super fans through the initial shallow followers, turning them into super fans & building a strong connection. It's interesting seeing these broken down though, gives me a bit more to think about in regards to my direction.
