The only positive thing I can say about Final Fantasy XIII-2 is that it didn't take me three episodes to sin it. Felt like it did though. Yeah, there's a lot of stupid to be found in this one.

That whole "changing the future changes the past" thing has to do with the fact that people can see the future in this story. If I can see the future and you change it, you change what I see and therefore you change what I'll do based on what I'm seeing. If I'm seeing this in "the past" from your perspective then you effect the past by changing the future because you effect my visions.

nope, try to look at it as a possible future you are from, and that's not the only one, there are more of them, something like paradox, so when you change past, you creat new future where is new you... But you is still you, because, if you didn't go back a didn't change the past, the future would be still same and you would not help yourself...

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 7 лет назад +22

Also, the future is shaped by the past, so by artifically changing the future, you change all events that led to that future, which would be the past.

yeah, but remenber, Noel lost some of his memories, he just know that the Cocoon fall and everything else he didn't know, that means, that even if they go on the quest change the past, they will fail, cause in other words, Noel would disapeared when they succeded, but he didn't, remember Snow when you met him on his quest protect the Cocoon pilar? He also disapeared when you helped him to solve the paradox and cleared it, that should have been for Noel the same if they would succeded, but they didn't that means that from the start when they were sent on the journey, they were predicted to fail it :) got it? (yeah don't speak english well, sorry)

I pay waaaaay too much attention to Final Fantasy lore (especially XIII, Type-0, and XV). Let me establish that before any potential flame wars are started:
0:14 No, you didn't miss a game, but you did miss a light novel, something Final Fantasy does on a regular basis. See VII and Type-0 to prove my point.
1:00 Eidolons are summoned from Valhalla. Just because Snow can't summon Stiria and Nix anymore doesn't mean they don't exist. Also, the Paradigm Pack system is implemented in-story. Lightning defeats them, they obey Lightning.
1:23 Comet and Meteor are not only two different spells. They TWO DIFFERENT MATERIA all together.
1:55 The CSB system is already an improvement of the ATB system, and still better than the Gambit system from XII.
3:34 Eidolon Summoning... If she can do it with Odin, she can do it with Mog.
5:02 Non-l'Cie started being able to use magic After Fall.
5:11 Even though Compilation of Final Fantasy VII also had real moogles and toy moogles?
7:53 Paradox Endings... There's one where they end up 200 years Before Fall and find a still-crystallized Vanille. Also, in forward-canon, it's because Etro overstepped her bounds After Fall.
13:13 Nurse Joy is a different person in each location. Chocolina is the same. She's basically Gilgamesh for this game.
20:19 Fal'Cie can brand people WITHOUT giving them a focus. That automatically turns them into Cie'th.
    20:29 He's not Caius...
24:59 Etro interfered with the Mortal Realm when she woke up 6 of the 8 crystallized l'Cie. The future that was supposed to happen, where nobody "lived" was overwritten with one where all but Vanille and Fang "lived", and the universal recoil of a goddess doing something so reckless cause the beginning of the paradoxes and the removal of Lightning from the new timeline. Ow, my head...
    37:36 Paradox...

I applaud your analysis of such depth. Sadly, it does little to explain how poor the plot is in this game and instead points out the convolution. Keeping things out of exposition or in disorderly fashion just to keep fans guessing is a very cheap, very "sinful" way of writing. In this game's case further, time travel is one of the riskiest tropes for a reason.

      *_Major Spoilers_*
Here we have traveling back to the past to only one certain point, call this *(Point A)*, and when the power to travel back is activated, call this *(Point B)*. Say, someone/something was destroyed between these two parts and the power was activated are you go from *( Point B)* -> *(Point A)*. No matter what you do, they/it WILL be destroyed again because it already happened and you can't stop it, think of it like the movie Final Destination. Only way out is destroying the power or stopping it before They/it is destroyed.

I know this is 5 months late but for anyone new watching this or simply want to enjoy the game more without thinking it has a lot of plot holes, i'll explain some of them (though I do not excuse the ton of ex machinas in the game) :
      1. "Changing the future also changes the past" is because the future and past IS being intersected by the "paradoxes," which aren't the same time travel paradox by definition that we're used to. In this game a paradox is just an item, people, or monsters that are from other times or are connecting two time periods.
The first example is that after they get rid of the titan "paradox" in the future, the past was changed so that Hope never needed to go to the ruins because of the eclipse. Instead he goes there because of the future seeing machine (though for magical reasons he felt like he should wait there anyways). This was only 1 change, because of all the other "paradoxes" bridging future and past, along with every other character also becoming time travelers and bridging future and past, a single "change the future" will produce multiple changes in the past. It's basically all the "Paradox Endings" the game has, that Serah died cuz she had to watch it all.
      2. (this is a guess, and same with sin #183) the reason Serah's clothing changed was because she entered a different world when the comet fell. As in she went to Noel's timeline where Cocoon wasn't there. Assuming there was also a Serah at that time wearing a different outfit. In short, she changes outfits when she changes realms. (the dream realm was an imitation of her in her original timeline so that's why she's in FFXIII outfit). If this argument isn't sound, then hell, FF ex machina. Like Dartigan said they needed a sexier design.
      3. The gates don't always take them to exactly where they need to (hence the really long game), but the point is that they're moving forwards "being reckless" and doing the only thing they can because there's nothing else they can do.
      4. (#95) He did the villain thing and didn't kill them because his ultimate goal was for Noel to kill himself later in the future willingly, thus releasing all the chaos. This is explained in the ending hidden Lightning scene when she fights Caius and he reveals to her that she played right into his plans right from the beginning.
      5. btw I think the eclipse thing is the same as FFXV bs, as in it's not a lunar or solar eclipse like we know (they don't have an earth and sun, their world and planets are different, which begs the question why they say those words so often lol). The eclipse never happened after they went to Oerba in the future was because they got rid of the "paradox" that connected the two times, which shows up as a form of eclipse, effectively changing the past.
      6. My understanding of why Snow's jumping through time solely form the game is that Lightning told him she's at another timeline in his dream and that he needs to start jumping to look for her, since that's what he was setting out to do in the first place.
      7. (126-128) The guys a robot, not the actual Caius.
8.(128) Serah's just pure-hearted, she's feeling sad not only cuz its a Yeul but also at the idea that she's the one who caused their deaths (she's not actually causing their deaths but she doesn't know that at this point).
      9. (156) The farewell thing is them being sarcastic, it was basically "No. No I never planned to say goodbye" "yeah I knew you guys wouldn't so I came instead"
10.(160) He waits 100 years after the blueprints and ideas are intact cuz that small planet takes 100 years to build.
      11. (163) He didn't kill them earlier or actually kill them (as oppose to sending them to a dream realm) cuz 4. he needed them alive.
      12. (167) The two Yeul's were talking about the same thing. The goddess's mercy freed them from the crystals, but in the process of using her powers chaos seeped through and dragged Lightning to Valhalla, effectively erasing her existence from her original time line starting the moment she uncrystalized (erasing her existence = changing her expected future).
btw, Only Serah remembers the events of what happened because she's got the goddess's eyes, think of them as the Reading Steiner and Serah is basically Okabe Rintarou from the deja vu movie.
      13. (182) same as why Serah couldn't save Noel until that pillar of light thingy after he decides to leave the realm (in his case, wanting to die).
      14. (188,221) Cuz Caius can't kill himself, he's immortal and only another Guardian can kill him. This case being Noel, the last Guardian, also a prick that doesn't want to kill him.
      15. (192) The reason why Serah dies despite only having the power for a short while was because while Yeul's foreseeings watched flashes of the future of their entire lives, it was one future and bits of it. Serah binge watched both the future and the past change when she died, meaning all the splits in different endings.
      16. (198) Lightning isn't dying cuz she's borrowing the goddess's powers to see these things. The foreseers possess the power as a gift/curse from the goddess and the consequences takes its toll out on the foreseers bodies. Think of it as Lightning is using a magical telescope to see these things instead of her own fleshy eyes.
      17. (211) What, Sazh can't get another baby Chocobo to put in his fro?
      18. (212) Yeah, next shot she replies to him that she's very aware of that fact lol.
      19. (214) considering that crystal Serah can sometimes communicate with the characters, I'm guessing she watched the player play FFXIII in her dreams.
      20. (218) Lightning supposedly dies (gets defeated) after she fishes them out of the ocean. She wakes up later to a dead Serah. I think that was part of the bonus part after unlocking all the Paradox Endings or something. It explains why she turned into a crystal again...but not how...
      21. (220) not exactly a plot hole but it might be a Japanese trend nowadays with immortals wanting to kill themselves. Kaido in One Piece, Utsuro in Gintama, Ardyn in FFXV, etc. it's a character cliche.
      22. (224) We all get the idea that Cocoon falling = end of the world. But we tend to forget that the end of the world wasn't because Cocoon crashed like the moon onto Earth, it's because the fear of it falling caused people to go crazy and build Transformers to fight each other, those destroyed the world.
I still agree there are still loads of plot holes as there are with pretty much any story and that's why these videos are so fun to watch (I always get great laughs from them). These problems include the fact that Noel didn't really have a "time-gazing friend" if all he did was stumble upon time travel. Snow's brand never gets explained in this game. Noel's amnesia is never explained.
Regardless I really enjoyed the video, but sometimes these videos create a hate wave for people to underrate games. It was long and maybe not the best thing in the world, but I wanted to clear up some points made in the video to give the game back a couple points for people who maybe thinking about playing or revisiting the game.

XIII-2 is where the XIII story just stopped making any sense. Basically, XIII-2 happens because, not only did Toriyama have a creepy fascination for Lightning -- which is disturbing in itself for so many reasons -- but a goddess _(you know, those all-knowing beings whom should therefore know what will happen next in every instance)_ de-crystallizes a few people after they have saved the world...and ultimately disrupts time, which causes numerous paradoxes and sets off a chain of events that have absolutely _nothing_ to do with the original tale. Thus, she ultimately comes off as either incredibly naive, or downright inept as a god.
Not to mention that this whole game completely nullifies the events of the first game. Everything they set out to prevent ended up happening anyway, so what was the point? They spend the whole game defying their fate and trying to save the world...and they, technically, end up destroying it anyway. Real nice... - _ -
The biggest issue with this game -- aside from the plot bearing potential, but being utterly wasted and stupid instead -- is that Serah is made a seeress out of nowhere. Seriously, where did she get those powers from? If Etro gave them to her, what made her so special over everyone else? Also, why is Serah's dream in the final episode _actually_ a dream, but Noel's "dream" is his past and it turns out he's actually there? Plothole? Or did the devs and writers just lose track of what they were doing in this terribly convoluted plot? It seems as though XIII-2 even confused _them_ .
I mean, they made Serah a seeress _just_ to kill her off, so they would have a premise for Lightning Returns. They couldn't come up with something better? Really? After XIII games, at the _least_ ...that's their best setup for a sequel? Though I suppose it's better than absolutely no basis for one, whatsoever -- like how XIII-2 came into existence. The story was resolved, and the plot fulfilled, Snow, Lightning, and Sazh got their loved ones back. Hope's mother died, but that's a part of life -- he still had his father, whom we saw him begin to repair his relationship with _in_ game. There was no reason for this story, other than one man's insane desire to see his OC waifu one last time to feed his creepy and ridiculous lust for her.
While we're at it...Hope was actually 14 in-game. How would he suddenly have gotten _older_ than Serah? He should still be living on New Bodhum with his father, in the village where Serah and Snow lived. For some reason, he is an adult with no explanation, whose younger incarnation -- his 14-year-old self -- should still be around somewhere. You know, the _real_ Hope Estheim? Do people honestly believe he would physically age 10 years without explanation? He is younger than Serah and always has been. That _especially_ makes no sense -- yet, no one questions it... Interesting...
This game left more questions than answers, but they figured that by adding a new chapter where Hope was suddenly de-aged again, the paradoxes ultimately _weren't_ resolved _(another plot-point that ended up being pointless)_ , and having every character be mulling over the deaths of a single person...all of these questions could be ignored. Then they could just bring Serah back into the picture all of a sudden by the time people forgot about all of these plotholes due to the overly-convoluted and pointless storyline.
The first XIII game was fine as is. They should have just left it alone.

I agree with everything you said BUT 13-1 was trash and had an equally bad story that made the same amount of sense as 13-2. Also yes I know the entire story in depth and understand how their world works yet it still made no sense and had TONS of story flaws in 13 almost if not more than 13-2. I just dont want to type them all cuz I already had this convo in an extended FF13 blog and other comments. After 12 games that all have masterfully written stories wtf happend? why does 13 exist and why is SE so obsessed with Lightning.... Ugh I dont understand why anyone wouldnt get why these games are hated so passionately. Most (if not all) of its defenders are people who had it as their first Final Fantasy only by default due to it being the only FF on PS3 for that era/generation of gamers. Otherwise this is the worst videogame trilogy in all of history without question... In every way its objective so hate me all you guys want and tell me im wrong BUT if you all do, I guarantee you will always question yourself when alone wondering if youve made a mistake by liking something bad and thinking to yourselves "damnit I refuse to believe he was right, I dont care what anyone says This is a good game!" welp in that case telling yourselves "I dont care what everyone says Its a good game" is literally called being delusional. (sorry for the rant but the fanboys for this game [not FireHeart321] dont even know themselves whats going on in the story when I break down all its flaws and its stupid plot into details. Noone gets the full plot and the people who do get the every single little tiny plot detail hate this game cuz they realize its a mess, contradicting, and a stupid story to tell in the first place)

    • @LoneGamerNerd
      @LoneGamerNerd 5 лет назад +3

Ugh... RUclips never notified me of these responses... Interesting...
Anyway, I used to defend XIII like crazy. But after a couple years, I don't anymore. The first game constantly contradicts itself; the second game exists for no reason other than Toriyama didn't want Lightning to be forgotten; and LR only exists because of the mess XIII-2 was -- which rumor has it, the events of LR, apparently, made XIII-2 irrelevant anyway. So if that's true, it only further implies how pointless the sequels were.
Used to be a XIII fan. I haven't touched the game in a few years now _(mainly because of Lightning and Hope; the whiniest characters ever)_ , and I often wonder what I liked about it so much. But the sequels just threw everything out the window. You can't even really call them sequels.
To the first guy whom replied: I played XIII and XIII-2. I won't touch LR for so many reasons -- mainly just, not being interested after the fiasco that was XIII-2. But I'm not an idiot... I'm not the only one whom couldn't make sense of the story -- and there's no denying that, in the first game especially, the characters directly and willingly do exactly what the Fal'Cie wanted in the end despite their initial notion of defying their fate. Meanwhile, the sequels completely tossed that notion aside: all of the characters just accept their fate(s) now, including Ms. "I control my fate", by just living with what has happened to them and, even moreso, submitting to it. Literally, in every game, the characters spend their quest trying to change fate and get a happy ending, only to do exactly as fate desires and make things even worse on themselves.
That is, literally, the plot of each XIII game in a nutshell -- and LR is so far out of left field it's not even funny.

Great video as always, and I actually like 13-2. Just two things. Noel remembering that Yeul was smiling when she died was because he just couldn't remember why she died, he did say he could clearly remember her face, "as if it happened yesterday". And the whole "If you change the future, you change the past" essentially just means that when changing the future, the timeline up to that point is changed to fit the new future.

Lightning appeared at the end there because, during her fight with Caius, she'd seen that Serah had died. She couldn't handle her death and gave up her fight with Caius and drifted in time where she ended up in both the scenes she appears in within the base game, once she helped them she met with Serah's soul at the throne of Etro and became a crystal to house Serah's soul to protect it from the flood of chaos and keep her memory alive as Serah asks, resulting in her appearance in the very last scene of her sitting atop Etro's throne.

    • @UsonoHoushi
      @UsonoHoushi 8 лет назад

Takuya Blaze First off, Sorry if it's long. We're talking about science here.
The dimensions you travel to only have "slight" differences from the one your characters come from.(unlike with other dimension jumping stories like Escaflone and even Digimon)
If you know the concept of a multiverse (which- if you think about is the what the game's built around on), the fractures you go to look like the paths that you don't choose when making choices in life.
Also the whole game is Time themed. You fight against a Great Spirit called freaking Chronos, your key item for everything important to the plot is a Pocket watch. and the theme around the game's UI are gears in a watch.
It's not the usual style of time traveling we know of. (they never more forward or back in time) but it's pretty clear with the choices, multiple endings and all the time themes, that TOX2 is a time traveling game.
A good example is the XX time lines in 13-2. there's an Academia 400 and 4XX. Same place existing same time, but existing in two different time line. That's TOX2's Time traveling in a nut shell.

I love Caius but they did some mistakes. For example Caius is a father for Yeul and she is like a daughter because in the novel, which is Canon, it is made clear that every Yeul has to leave her family after she had her first vision or speaks her first word which is mostly at the age of 3 or 5 so Caius raised every Yeul like his own daughter just to see her die.
He does not love her as a female or as a lover he loves her as daughter like Barret loves Marlene who isn't his biological daughter but he loves her like this.
Sadly they don't show or mention that in they game you literally need to read the novel.
They also didn't show much of the relationship between Caius and Noel which would be possible because they just could make it like Noel tells Serah about his past and then you play as Noel and his Friend Yanik who also was Caius student but died because he wanted to prove that he can hunt without Noel and then get killed.
They should have put it in, like really, it would be great to play as Noel and Yanik as characters and have Caius as the third party whenever they leave their village.
They could have do it like "Tales of grace" where you start in the past or in this case in the past of Noel and then go further. It would be better and they could make the game longer with it and don't needed these paradox endings. It also shows why Noel is so angry with Snow because Snow remembered him about Yanik his friend.
They should have also added more new locations instead of copying the old ones.
But it's to late now. However Caius is my favorite final Fantasy character, I just love him. I really like his design, with the feathers in his hair and my favorite color is purple which is his hair color and his armor color. I also like his English voice. Liam O'Brian is a great voice actor. I also liked his voice in Asuras Wrath.

Well for Serah somewhere in XIII-2 or Lightning Returns it says all of the crystal created from Cocoons pillar at the end of XIII seeded Pulse with Crystals awakening peoples magic abilities.
And for Noel he's from far in the future where magic is commonplace, they even make note that Noel doesn't see the magic as anything special, by that point its normal for everyone to use magic.

Ah, Time. The most complex and simple...But complex subject. I didn't realize how fragile storytelling involving time travel can actually be. From what I know, It would have to be very consistant. There would be a lot of things to consider:
My guess is that "Time Gates" would be "Time Rifts" or Entry points to keep the mathematical fixtures of the cosmos in balance. There's also possible time loops--From realities that have already happened--Time Alterations; From the loop to changing something and breaking the loop, Distortions/Temporal Time Fluxes; Timelines that could shift or become intertwined with another timeline. But there's also something else that bugged me about this game that struck mystery...
    >Wouldn't there have been a point in time where Noel and Serah would have run into ANOTHER Noel and Serah from time traveling often enough?
    >Also, I know that time travel is a very......I should say sophisticated and plot-heavy subject but, No one actually...Ages the entire time during the game. So....Everyone can time travel?
    **MINDBLOWN**

    • @fieryrebirth
      @fieryrebirth 7 лет назад

To summarize: The reason why time travel is such a risky trope to use is because it is a theory. Nothing is set in stone with how time travel works, leading to narratives with it having a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies.

I guess the whole: "Changing the futrue changes the past" can work somewhat like this:
If you changed something in the future, then the past needs to change in order to fit events for the changed future. However that is seriously stretching it because if you time traveled and changed the future, that is only you changing the future. Nothing in the past had anything to do with it

Having to read the in-game wiki so that you can understand what's happening is a *terrible* way of telling a story. Codices should be optional, in case you want to learn of the details that don't concern the current story. I played throughout all of the Dragon Age series without putting a finger on the codex entries and I still managed to understand everything that was happening. FF13, on the other hand, expects you to read the thing as if you were studying for a test. Way to make your game enganging.
