Thanks for showing the good, the bad, and the ugly of solo BDR riding. Despite the mishaps, looks like a great trip. Awesome video!

Yeah, section 4 starts out so nice and then you get to those rocks and they go on for a long long time :) We rode them on big bikes and it was challenging. Keep the great videos coming! Glad you got out of there safely.

@AmpedRider that would be awesome, but I have plans early August. Thanks for the invite though. I think the next BDR for me would be Norcal

I live near this section and those rocks are utterly miserable. I get to travel on them quite a bit and they are miserable every time. Smart move to take the R turn on Lake Mary Rd and stop in Flagstaff.

You got through some far more challenging looking sections before the loose stuff got you Scottie.
You're doing really good. Your commentary is so entertaining. Haha. 😉👌

Yup did it on my 1999 KLR650 on june 1st. We came out of phoenix over 4 peaks snd across roosevelt lake and up to young via 288. The Aztec peak climb was as wild as those rocks. The rocks definitley wore us out but nobody fell. We got to the shell station in winona and took a 3 hour break then knocked out the cinders part of section 5 when i took a 35mph tumble near the end of the sand and blew off my footpeg which ended our trip unfortunatley. The ride back to phoenix was therapudic along lake mary road and the beeline back to mesa. Keep riding brother🙏✌️

@scotthudspeth5233 the mighty KLR! Glad it was just a foot peg. Ride safe!

Thanks for sharing even the tough stuff Scott. You probably already thought about this in hindsight but one way to avoid fatigue and the mistakes that come with it is to have a time of the day you stop, a cutoff point. Another is if you’re tired it’s okay to pull over and make camp early regardless of time of day. I enjoyed your video and look forward to more.

@agp7073 you are absolutely correct. Definitely considered on my way home especially riding solo.

Just when you think those rocks are done, there’s more…and more. Was a running joke the rest of the BDR for us.
Used Gaia gps on my phone when we did the AZBDR, highly recommend it, even if for only a backup gps.

Glad you got out in one piece! That was a close thing. Have you upgraded suspension on the DR, it can make a big difference on technical terrain. But I agree I think fatigue played a part.

    • @ScottyADV

@@ScottyADV Scotty, I own both a 2021 DR650 that I love and a BMW G310GS which you used to own. My DR is fully kitted out, it is truly a great bike for my needs. I noticed you installed Rally Raid Level 1 on your old BMW, did it make a huge difference to your off-road riding? Reason asking, is I am considering doing similar on the baby GS so my son's can join me off-road.

@@OnRappel the new Zumo XT2 is a good model. The zumo XT is sufficient if you can find one on sale or used. Garmin customer service is great. Using a phone you don’t care about damaging would work too. With the phone Gaia GPS is great.

I’ve ridden the long lake trail quite often. Luckily never crashed, but then again I rode a lighter XR 400R. What if you seriously hurt yourself, And your bike is disabled? You shouldn’t ride alone.
