We have reached the end of 2003 in our complete Undertaker career retrospective. The Undertaker took on WWE chairman Vince McMahon at the 2003 Survivor Series and thanks to Kane, Big Evil was put to rest and The Undertaker was written off television. At the 2004 Royal Rumble though, we learned that The Undertaker was alive and well.
Although Mark Calaway didn't want to end the "American Badass" run of The Undertaker, the WWE higher-ups managed to talk Mark into coming back to the WWE as "The Deadman". Undertaker's previous gimmick that brought him to the dance, "The Phenom", was going to make his return at WrestleMania XX. 'Taker sent messages loud and clear to his little brother Kane in the run-up to Mania in 2004, and the career of The Undertaker was set to "All Begin... Again" in Madison Square Garden. This video looks at the Return of the Undertaker in 2004 and his match at WrestleMania XX with Kane.
    Topics covered include:
00:00 - Kane puts "Big Evil" to rest
03:14 - Undertaker's hesitance to return as "The Deadman"
06:15 - The Undertaker toys with Kane in the run-up to WrestleMania
09:41 - Undertaker makes the ring levitate
12:28 - Undertaker vs Kane at WrestleMania XX
    - Much More!

I remember a video of Glen himself saying that his introduction as Kane in 1997 was one of the best stories ever written in the WWE. I'm one that agrees. I think this return story was one of the best ever written too. Glen did an amazing job carrying the story in the weeks prior to Wrestlemania, I remember watching in sheer awe of him. I believe Glen was an amazing talent often overlooked/overshadowed by other competitors. He definitely belongs in the top 10 greatest of all time.

Bringing back the deadman character while keeping some of the ABA traits was the right choice- it got rid of some of the cheesier aspects of the old deadman character that, while I personally loved them, probably were near the end of their shelf life. A perfect example of one of the all-time greats evolving with his audience.

I'm probably the lone wolf out of my friends that actually favored Biker Taker, and that's not to say I didn't love the Deadman as well. It's so iconic. This "hybrid" was cool, but they did away with it fast. I noticed that fact when on the fallout episode of SD following WM, when Taker came to the ring and delivered a Tombstone to SD GM Paul Heyman, he was rockin the bandana underneath his hat. That was the last time we'd see Taker wearing a bandana until the Boneyard Match vs Styles. With the exception of that episode of SD, I viewed everything from 2004 and beyond as simply further evolution of the Deadman character.

As a kid who adored WMXIX, I couldn't wait for WMXX and it was largley because of the way they built to this return. It's simple yet effective and the best part of building anticipation is that they never showed you what Taker would look like until he walked down the ramp at Mania, which encourages you to buy the show and tune in!
Now a days they'd probably have him show up on a random Raw 2 weeks before the show tomb stoning Kane killing any mystique or desire to see him for the first time at Mania laying hands on his rival.

Hells gate=gogoplata in BJJ. An effective submission. Not enough credit.

Would of been awesome if Undertaker used the triangle choke as a normal submission & the gogoplata as a finisher from 2008 & beyond...

Im probably in the minority here but i really lilked AB taker more than the deadman return honestly. Especially Big evil taker on Smackdown, his feud wtih Lesnar is one of my favorites.

2004 until around 2011 when he became part timer was the best part of his career in my opinion. He still had good matches after 2011

He could've combined the 2 gimmicks together. Like a Ghostrider kinda theme entrance. The arena go dark riding a motorcycle through the smoke and flames to a dark ass heavy metal music.

I know everyone loves taker, but kane is my all time favorite! I don't think he gets enough credit. Kane was one of the few that even with a mask on, you can feel his emotion. The way he titled his head like a dog, was such a genius touch to his character.
Then after taking the mask off, using the towel to express his insecurities. Genius!

I remember being 14 and pissed that Kane helped McMahon bury the Undertaker alive. Once the mind games started at the Royal Rumble I was excited because I wanted to see a return of the dark side. Wrestlemania XX will go down as his best return. If was all around a great wrestlemania especially with Eddie and Chris at the end celebrating in the ring

4:30 I think he was frustrated. Because with the Deadman gimmick he used perform in the ring in a certain way in which he rarely ever got to show his wrestling chops. With the Big Evil and everything he could shed some of those restrictions. And with the 2004 return, he basically made it a hybrid version.
