- Neil Finn - Distant Sun. Recorded Live in London for the 'In The Round' or 'Songwriters Circle' series. Graham Gouldman of 10cc and Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera also took part. Check out my other videos for the show.
Imagine being on a "share your song" and this guy kicks off with this...
I’d put my guitar back on the rack and say, ok fella. 😃
"I don't pretend to know what you want......but I offer Love". Best line ever?
seven worlds will collide, whenever i am by your side,i like that...
...closely followed by "You're still so young to travel so far but old enough to know who you are"...
One of the best singers ever?
Second all points above :-) amazing lyrics, brilliant performance and a nice guy too. Proper talent.

Neil Finn writes lyrics that bring forth life into the world. You can feel his soul when he sings, and the band is a force that can't be ignored. Inspiring, and a blessing to us all. When I listen to their music my mind fills up like a crowded house.
I used to frequent a cafe just around the corner from Neils studio, one day my mate and I were out the back door having a ciggie and teaching him how to play "Four Seasons In One Day" on the guitar when suddenly my mate had this embarrassed grin on his face, I turned around and there was Neil behind me listening to me butcher his song. I immediately bowed in reverence and presented him the guitar to which he replied "keep going mate, you play it better than I do" Yeah Right.
Gotta be half Aussie
Wow where was this?

What a gc
That is criminally good.
Speechless as to the beauty of this recording
This is one of the most beautiful and amazing songs ever. I discovered it on a compilation album as a child, possibly Now 26. It used to be the song I’d go back to over and over. 30 something years later and it still means so much to me.
Perfect. ‘You’re still so young to have travelled so far, old enough to know who you are...’ That line always makes me think of my daughter; she was born just after this song came out, and I always think of this song and specifically that line when I think of her growing into a woman and finding her own way in life. She’s 24 now. I can’t listen to this song without feeling that familiar prickling behind my eyelids. It’s one of my all time favourites and I think Neil Finn is a solid gold genius.
It's easy to make comparisons of his songwriting to Lennon and McCartney, but I would go one further and compare him to Paul Simon. That line in particular is very Paul Simonesque.
My name is John,i,m from Leeds in West Yorkshire. When i was 18 in 1989 i hitch hiked round Australia. Crowded House,The Smiths and New Order were my roadside singalong companions.
jpa221 Now that's a playlist
@@infarction8840 Little bit of AC/DC as well pal .LOL
Good choice John, my English brother :)
Good choices man
@Bordiga Armchair no it isn't, it's mint.
i think as i grew up i took songs like this for granted. maybe im just getting old but im coming back to these classics and getting blown away by them. maybe its just nostagia
It's not nostalgia it's your soul trying to talk to you
To be honest, Neil is my fav singer in the universe, one of my fav songs this is!
I am puzzled how 34 people can not like this, crowded house were awesome Neil is an amazing artist with a beautiful voice, what a great job 10 out of 10
Outstanding vocal...
Outstanding tune...
The best of their best IMHO
You can actually see the respect for Neil from the other two. Neil is a genius lyricist.
Easily my favourite Neil Finn song. The man is up there with the very best songwriters of all time
2018. still melt at this voice, this song.
Still amazing in 2021.
And in 22 and forever for me
@@chrispoole2584 certainly are bud
@@chrispoole2584 You beat me to the 22 extension.
...and he is an extraordinary rhythm accompanist, not just guitarist - absolutely exquisite chord voicing and phrasing for each song, subtle not to interfere but so interesting to play. Those Finn boys have got the haunting voices and songs that will keep a flame alight inside ya !
Prolific songwriter. How does that come out of people ? Stunning.
How a voice and a guitar can create deafening silence.
I wish I had such a beautiful voice! Magical to listen to.
Wow I'm speechless... Thank you Neil Finn we Aussies claimed you long ago... Make us so proud... So tragic that Paul passed he was also so talented... I was surfing with him in Byron Bay when I was about 15. I couldn't place his face but I turned to him and said are you in a band? He said yeh Crowded House and I was absolutely thrilled. You bring tears to my eyes when ever I hear any of your songs. Thank you Sir our fine Kiwi friend...
Well, as a Kiwi, it is indeed an honour for an Aussie cousin to claim one of our own. Nice words, Damien. In Maori culture land cannot be owned. I suppose Neil similarly cannot be owned - the guy is for everyone. Deep, ay? ;)
Martin Hugh maoris got fucked over big time.
2018. still melt at this voice, this song.
I wish I had such a beautiful voice! Magical to listen to.
Can't get any better than this....love Neil Finn!
as an Australian/Amercian I listen to you alot. you give me such emotional help when I miss Australia. my Yankee Husband says Him again, you play him all the time.but my aussie daughter and I can't get enough of him.he has a purity to his songs.and his voice is so soothing.he brings us comfort.I know he's a kiwi but he so aussie too. I love him and I know the sacrifice it takes on him and his family. He makes the world feel happy inside. we love you Neil you are our Hero.
real tough break up many years ago, this song always reminds me of very painful times but ultimately I can reflect on these lyrics now
Beautiful tune and a most iconic music artist 👏👏👏❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️
I have lived my life by this song.
Selsey Reclaim why
Neil is for me one of the creativ and human Musicians .Many times car driving and Crowded House
Crowded house and his voice got me through some of the toughest times in my life. Thank you guys. Prob saved my life more than once. Actually thats not true. You saved my moms abusive husbands life but i dont hold that against yall. Ron you should be their biggest fan! Had i not changed the disk to crowded house from the cult who knows. You might not have been so lucky.
@@morebollocks1 apparently its for assholes as well.
What an excellent human being.Great performance too.
Absolute perfection!!
This is one of my favorites singers in the world. Very respectfull and honest. Congratulations.
Yes.. I don't pretend what you want.. But I offer love.. Such a beautiful lyrics, thank you for this upload, my first to see and hear him, such a dire loss for me not knowing this man and his music earlier..
Wow... Roddy and Graham just stood by.....amazing.
He's crushing the other two.. What a song.. What a performance...
perfection is the closest word to describing this performance...
Thank you... for you words, taking me from youth to adulthood... and Still taking me....😀😉
I saw Crowded House in Liverpool England in 1992, amazing. Neil Finn, super talented musician. And hes from New Zealand where i grew up too. :) Though im living in England now enjoying infrequent sunny weather and good pints of real ale ;)
Neil is my favourite songwriter, just guitar and great voice.
A man and a guitar...amazing
G Ess a musical messiah and a guitar.
You hero! I have this on VHS but haven't converted to DVD. Greatest gig ever! Thankyou!
12 people had their monitor upside down when they rated this.
Being mugged by angels is exactly what this is. Neil, bless you, your lyrics are GOD speaking to people through the medium of music. you are playing spiritual messages please continue to do so, guys, listen to the words, fall at your feet, kare kare , make me weep with joy.
Like it my friend burst out laughing when I read it probably true as well.
They were Australians looking for a thumbs up.
In my opinion, one of the best bands out there and songwriters .
RIP Paul Hester, I missed your background vocals here, but was an excellent acoustic version, guitar work was exceptional as his voice...
Top neil hello from FRANCE 🎸🎸😉👍
This is why I am proud to be a Kiwi!!!
jorgen Frandsen same
Respect from an irishman, love your country, rugby and Neil.
My favourite song ever
Perfection can almost hurt.
Always loved this tune ...but that was something else...f ..ing..awesome Neil ..no doubt
Very greetings from Germany to the other side of the World! Thanks for this great song.
Great footage of one of the best voices of the 80's.
Thanks for posting !
The Beautiful truth...written and sung by Mr Neil finn.
Neil Finn = pure talent.
I was fortunate enough to see Neil perform this live. One of my favourite songs, i'll never forget it. I recall a review of the album described it as "being mugged by angels", that's how I felt listening to Neil sing.
+Robbie MacInnes what a great quote
Musical Genius!
de la poésie!
encore de la poésie,
toujours de la poésie,...
pour combler dans notre cœur une partie de son grand vide!
Belle chanson que j'ai déjà écouté, elle est magnifique, j'aime beaucoup les chansons en anglais.Merci
Pitch perfect 🥰
Great singer songwriter
what a talented beautiful man
Can Neil Finn write a song or what
astonishing is a good word
What a talented guy Neil Finn is.
I don't pretend to know what you want... but i offer love
I hope everyone in that audience understands they witnessed the world's best songwriter playing unplugged and live before auto-tune killed the world.
Without a doubt. The best ever live artist!
An I'm from Liverpool.
he has a beautiful voice
The guy who had to play next after that was thinking to himself "Aww f*%k.... how do I follow that?"
This is my absolute favorite CH song, and Neil pulls it off brilliantly on his own. The day that Neil Finn decides to stop making music will be a sad day for us all.
Esse cara arrebenta !! Canta demais ! Esse som é sensacional !!!
Hi Does it really matter? They are (both) great bands, and the reality they needed to get a bigger audience than both NZ and OZ, so went to Europe (I don't think the States really embraced them that much, but could be mistaken) Neil Finn is from Te Awamutu in the North Island of NZ, but lives in London these days. Brother Tim lives in Parnell, Auckland (NZ) but had they not moved to Melbourne, they would have become the best thing never to get out of NZ. Simple as that:-)
sublime.Very spiritual for me,Lovely.
WOW!!
Cool song 💕
I would hate to be the next one to sing after this!
i think the other two are thinking i'll get my coat!
"I don't pretend to know what you want......but I offer Love". Best line ever?
You can actually see the respect for Neil from the other two. Neil is a genius lyricist.
Just class.
my days on the Gold Coast..
Magic!!! Kiwi magic :)
Genius!
Sensational.even better than the Crowded House version, because Neil sounds so relaxed, showing his true genius. So hard to relate this performance to x factor!
gran tema
I spent all my money on a ticket to go see Tim and Niel at the mount maunganui speedway around 1984. I was about 16 and I think he was about 17-18. We grew up 5 km from each other. He was brilliant then and he is brilliant now
awsome
Brilliant
Can this session please be released on Spotify
The underrated thing here is control of tempo and time. It’s so easy when singing and playing acoustic guitar to disappear into your own realm of time and space 😂.
But Neil is solid as a rock here
This is brilliant.
Unbelievable, that’s all I can say
pure magic
Wonderful
so so so so fucking good! New Zealand represent
I offer love...................
I watched this one as this is the one with Roddy Frame.
siven worlds in the chorus.
i'm gonna start with a song called "Distant Sun"?
Imagine having to follow this??
What is that magical guitar? Kiwi-made? I love the tone... love this song... love the brothers Finn.
Almost certainly an Australian Maton
Let me add 4yrs older, not a phone to be seen!
Please Nail come to Italy, i beg you
"Tell me all the things you would change.
I don't pretend to know what you want.
When you come around and spin my top.
Time and again, time and again..."
I think every bloke has had his top spinned by one woman in his life just because he didn't really know what she wanted and she left him for it.
But then he meets another and
"It's easy to forget what you learned
Waiting for the thrill to return
Feeling your desire burn
You're drawn to the flame"
And then 7 worlds collide again...
there are many old friends I have discovered
I would have given my right avocado to have seen this billing live. Roddy isn't as appreciated outside of Northern Europe as he should be. Graham's catalogue is vast and excellent but if you ask people to name the writers of those songs, nobody could do it. Neil is the finest singer/songwriter of the last 40 years, in my estimation and can communicate as effectively in concert as anyone I have seen.
