John Carmack did this podcast while waiting in queue for WoW classic.
Lmao so true. Incendius
When I first tried to queue it said 840 minutes. Lol
Carmack wouldn't play a game that is coded by people who can't figure out how to run servers...fifteen years into billions of dollars from the same idea.
Carmack doesn't do nostalgia.
@dubnstuf They always underestimate the amount of players and fix it within the first day, but the problems have always been minor on expansion releases, this release will take weeks to balance out. Ive read estimates that 24 million people tried to play on launch.
Easily one of the smartest guys Joe has had on.
Cesar Figueroa - Carmacks thoroughness is impeccable
Try to get John Romero on next!
I think Romero isn't nearly on the same level. He still seems stuck in his past glory. He's a nice guy but compared to Carmack who transcended human form at this point... don't think it will be worth the time.
Just watch his presentations like Doom postmortem, really fun to watch
@@drawmaster77 Romero isn't as good of a programmer. But he's one hell of a designer.
@@auknix i think i came off as criticizing, I am actually big fan of Romero.
But besides Doom postmortem (which is great to listen yes), what has he really done since of note? I mean he's been making games since as a true game developer, I am by no means trying to trash him (he's upcoming game looks sick btw). But he wasn't launching rockets and innovating virtual reality... you know?
yeah! bump
Carmack's truly the most brilliant person alive. The way he digests and shares knowledge is incredibly inspiring. Great podcast.
@Phil Ill you literally have no idea who John Carmack is or who Decino is. I've known about Carmack before you were born kiddo
@Phil Ill basically kids like you don't know shit about Old School legends. So shut up
@Phil Ill He's one of the best programmers alive right now. This guy was reading whitepapers on cutting edge computer graphics just to make video games. And then made it work on consumer hardware.
@Phil Ill I agree that such terms get thrown about a lot, but there's a real case for this guy being one of the smartest people alive. He isn't some theoretical mastermind like someone like Roger Penrose, and he doesn't exactly invent new theories for anything. But if you simply look at the amount and depth of top-quality work this guy puts out, it's actually insane. He is an absolute master enginner, in the sense that he applies everything that's known and actually makes it work in practice. He's also well versed in a ton of subjects, and has a truely inspiring no-nonsense workethic and general approach to innovation. If you want to look for someone who knows about and developed high-efficiency computing in real world applications, this is your guy.
Also don't forget he endorsed Ron Paul in his 2012 presidential campaign. Smart guy.
Carmack is my idol in computer science, and this was another great interview from Joe! Super insightful stuff
Really amazing!!
It's crazy how much insight you can get out of two guys sitting around talking about video games for 3 hours...They've got great chemistry too, the everygamer and the programmer...
I'm so glad to see the much deserved respect. I grew up during the birth of computer games so this dude basically is a Walt Disney to me. But you know, not creepy.
@@42Mrgreenman seriously, it's a great dynamic. as a programmer, I learned a lot just from Joe asking questions from a different point of view
@@SuggestiveGaming I'm a network engineer and it's always great to flesh out my knowledge of related fields, and John is amazing, a total geek for programming.
Doom and Quake are awesome, but thanks for all the support for Linux and OpenGL too, John!! And most of all open source!
@@abeidiot Today Id software isn't really living up to what it was at Carmack time, thanks to Bethesda. Just look what they did with the "every game engine getting replaced will be open-sourced", someone at Bethesda said "hum no, that's not the optimal way to make money on the very short term, stop doing that already".
I think most of the reason Carmack left Id Soft for Occulus was that kind of big company bs.
I've never seen Joe respect a non-fighter/comedian this much, he really is a quake fan
There’s more to Carmack than Quake. Rockets, turbo Ferraris, Several game engines, a few Algorithms here and there, JUDO, falling out with Steve Jobs, and being sent to a home for juvenile delinquents. Just to name a few.
Best podcast Joe has done in months. John Carmack is sharp as a tack.
But Bernie thoooooooooooooooooooogh
@@keithmicomonaco616 Ew. No. lol This is by far the best in at least 3 months.
Amen. This podcast has been kinda trash lately. This is interesting af!
John: Talks about any game
Joe: " See, that's the thing with Quake..."
SuburbanProperty
John: mentions Beat Saber and VR enthusiastically for the 3rd time
Joe: “yeah so I have this idea about a VR boxing glove”
"See, that's the thing with Quake..." is the thing with Quake, as one who has felt the venom of that addiction.
This podcast with John should have been 5 hours minimum, o well, please have him on again sometime soon.
Have him on with Elon Musk at the same time!
@@MartianMoon Has my vote
It's too bad Richard Feynman is no longer with us. He would have been great on Joe Rogan's podcast.
Man.
Thats exactly what was on my mind reading the sensory deprivation tank chapter in his biography
I wish.
Damn. Imagine listening to some 2 hour interview on Dick Feynman... He is the intellectual inheritor of both Einstein and Newton.
Yeah, but we have neil de grasse tyson to fill up his shoes.:p
Epic podcast. John Carmack may be the worlds biggest nerd. Hopefully be back on the podcast again some day. He’s an amazing human.
No, the worlds biggest nerd is a 23 year old funky mixed race chick who aint taking no shit from incompetent bigots... Hollywood said so...
Been a really big JC fan since I was in high school, I am in my 40's now and he is still amazing to me!
this man is a genius. his tech talks at quakecon were legendary.
I remember watching one in 2012 or someting and I had to watch it like in a week and a half because it was very dense and technical and 3 and a half hours long to boot! I liked his talks though, his voice is somewhat soothing to me
