    I think you're right about there being a difference, and I think your definitions are correct as far as how the genres have developed and are received by the larger reader population. Primarily because, of what I've read, those that are more typically described as "romantasy" do tend to fall apart without the romantic plots, while the "fantasy romance" can survive without them, while feeling like something is missing.
    But I think that's backwards.
    In my opinion, the first component is the modifier, much like other subgenres (historical fiction, paranormal romance, dark fantasy, etc.). So the "romance" in "romantasy" is saying "this is a fantasy-forward book with strong romantic elements." Whereas "fantasy romance" should be saying "this is a romance-forward book with strong fantasy elements." That is not, however, what most of the corners of the readerverses seem to adhere to.
    I begrudgingly accept the classifications for how they are largely applied, however, even if I think they would've been more accurate the other way around. 😂

    I appreciate the distinction between the two, but there are more sub genre’s than just the two. There’s historical fantasy, urban fantasy, and paranormal romance to name a few. For example, “Bride” is actually paranormal romance.
    If you are as obsessed with vampires as I am, there is a whole backlist of older series that stand the test of time. One of my favorites is the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. Such a good series.

    I do love how you explained it and you gave so many good recommendations! I agree that there needs to be a distinction because people harping on SJM not being good at politics and fantasy elements only having read ACOTAR is doing my head in 😂 people really need to give TOG a chance, it’s an epic fantasy all the way through, even if the magic system and politics aren’t the most unique, it’s still a very well written YA fantasy series.

    I've watched Vampire Diaries and never expected to like a show that seemed so teen focused. The writing was good and the best part was the vampires. Now I've recently played Baldur's Gate 3 which has a vampire who is done very well and now I'm obsessed with vampires again. I'll have to give The Serpent and the Wings of Night a try. I've never read romance books before but I've read fantasy. I am wary about cringe but maybe it's just something I have to get over... or maybe a lot of romance books are cringe except for the good ones?

    • @LivinLiterature
      @LivinLiterature  7 месяцев назад +2

      The trick is to find the good ones! You especially I don’t think would like Romantasy, but a Fantasy Romance would be SO up your alley! Another one that I think you’d enjoy which is super intense is “Empire of the Vampire” by Jay Kristoff, seriously excellent! And as for cringe, I’d say when it’s well written it’s never cringe 😏😉 Give serpents and the wings of night a chance I think you’ll love it!

    Guys can someone help?? I want to read some fantasy/romantic books but so far every recommendation I got were so childish. I want some good written plots and deep characters. I mean the plot doesn't even have to be so complicated I just want to enjoy it while reading it.
    For example Shatter Me was so overhyped on social media so I read it but it was sooooo CHILDISH. Also so many ppl liked Throne of Glass and I gave it a try but it was boring. Like how am I supposed to find good books?? Please, any recs?

    I think I disagree. IMO Romantasy is equal parts romance and fantasy (they need to fit the reader expectation of both). Fantasy Romance (ie. Paranormal Romance) is a romance with fantasy elements. Romantic Fantasy is a fantasy with romantic elements. “Romantic” and “Fantasy”/”Paranormal” are treated as adjectives. Then “Romance” and “Fantasy” are nouns. Romantasy is a noun, so it is a genre mashup. It's about reader expectations. If you tell me it is a Fantasy Romance and it’s mostly fantasy, I will be pissed.

      This is getting like the different genres of metal... sometimes you can categorize things so specifically that it begins to lose all meaning, and a lot of it is subjective. I'm not sure I would've classified Divine Rivals as Romantasy myself - in my opinion, it's more delving into the impact of war on non-combatants (PTSD etc) and family than romance. Sure, the romance is important to the plot, but it felt to me more as a secondary arc.
