Shakuni mama physically deformed himself so that he does not qualify to become a king (a king is expected to be physically perfect and he would have been asked to take care of Ghandar kingdom ) and can be allowed to stay with his sister's protection (cause he now had a permanent limp technically physically disabled thus making him the original lungada thayagi ;-> ). Dhritarashtra did not share the same fate partly because Bishma acted as care taker of the kingdom. In a way Shakuni's character is touching, he wasted his whole life to avenge (according to him) injustice to his sister.

Bro I have a different version Gandhari was a manglik kanya so in hindu tradition she should marry a tree or animal then day after the tree/animal should cut down into half.No one knew that Gandhari was married before. But when dhritarashtra got to know that Gandhari was married before he got very furious. And hee jailed king of Ghandhar and his 100 sons including Shakuni. Dhritarashtra had ordered to give only food of one person for 100brothers and king Ghandhar. King Ghandhar decided one of them should stay alive to take revenge of 100 brothers. Among them only Shakuni was the one who was both a fighter and best in mind games. So all brothers and father gave their food to Shakuni. Also it was his father Ghandhar who twisted leg of Shakuni so that he never forget about his pastlife and take revenge and destroy the kuru family. When all got killed Shakuni made dice of his father's bones which was a boon , that whatever he calls it will happen and the bones would only listen to Shakuni. After all got killed Dhritarashtra ordered release of Shakuni and gave him his kingdom . But he decided to stay and help him in state politics as he was so brilliant in politics. It was so secret that even Gandhri was never heard of this in her lifetime abt her family imprisonment.

@@jyotipatil5535 Not in book but if search for Mahabharata podcast in Google podcast . From 2017 they are working on it and each episode is of roughly 21 minutes. Currently there are 60+ episodes. Their storytelling and story describing is too good. U will also get know many things which we never heard of.

Not many people know this but Gandhari was the daughter of Gandhar King (then Kandahar in Afghanistan). When she was married to Dhritarashtra, her family wasn’t aware that he was blind. When they came to know, they felt very betrayed and waged a war against Dhritarashtra. In response, he captured his father in law and all their sons, including Shakuni. All of them died in captivity but the king managed to secure his sons release in exchange for the sacrifice of the rest because Shakuni was the brightest. That’s when Shakuni wowed to destroy all the sons of Dhritarashtra to avenge his family’s destruction. He wasn’t a well wisher of Duryodhana. In fact he was his covert enemy all the time.
There are stories inside stories and subsided stories , every character has his stories . That's why it is epic history of Bharatvarsh.
