Under Japanese law, female imperial family members forfeit their status upon marriage to a "commoner" although male members do not.
She also skipped the usual rites of a royal wedding and turned down a payment offered to royal females upon their departure from the family.
She is the first female member of the royal family to decline both.

The Japanese word "民間人（Minkanjin）" means "private citizen", not "Commoner".
Note:Commoner is like a“平民(Heimin)” in japanese that meant Not rich and Not special, but “民間人" dont have such meaning, just a people in a country.

So many female royals have been forced to leave the Japanese imperial family & forfeit their royal status since the formation of the Japanese monarchy, Princess Mako is not the first, she is only the latest of a long list of female royals who were kicked out, and she certainly won't be the last...unless Japan change this stupid misogynistic rule.

As someone mentions here, this Japanese couple is criticized NOT because she married a "commoner" BUT due to their behaviors. Many other Japanese royals married non-royals getting high popularity from the public. Anyway, Mako successfully used this press meeting to let them known as "the fairy tale couple VS their evil enemies".

I thought Meghan and Harry would do what many expected + hoped for- given their mutual care for the environment and Africa - ie they'd work on conservation projects in Botswana, South Africa etc and also tour/promote commonwealth countries within Africa for at few yrs while their kids were young. What? I say I am belonging to the “younger generation”, but it’s weird how they just married, “letting the problems be”. I do understand, it is a human right and he might “love” her really. Japanese tabloids reported that she’s volunteering for a museum in NY and her husband is clerking for a law firm, and their finance is out of their means and Japanese government has to keep supporting their personal life in cost-rising Manhattan. The officials are frustrated with the couple who won’t become independent financially and socially.
The couple are asking the officials to arrange more spacious residence, hospitals, honeymoon trips, a beauty stylist, jobs, visas, etc and the officials are getting tired of it, and the eligibility is doubted for spending taxpayers’ fund for this no-longer princess.
And recently, her husband’s mother caused another financial problem against her “another” ex-boyfriend. She asked her 80-year-old ex-boyfriend to pay her back over 110K dollars what she claims she supported 20 years ago plus consolation. The boyfriend reported it to the Police. It would be grateful if non Japanese people have better understanding about ex-Princess Mako and Kei Komuro based on the objective facts that broad range native Japanese are aware of but non native Japanese may not. The difference of the awareness is probably due to the language barrier between Japanese and English. This is an attempt of the explanation for non Japanese people.
It is very true that majority of Japan citizens are anxious about the marriage of Mako and Kei Komuro since Japanese people are aware that there are unreasonably many suspicious things around them, mostly derived from Komuro family side. Typically, the next things are concerned a lot:-
1. There were multiple deaths around Kei Komuro’s mother within a short period. Kei Komuro’s father passed away by killing himself (suicide). Soon after that, Kei’s grandfather also did suicide. Later, within a year, Kei Komuro’s grandmother passed away. It is said that Komuro family’s financial difficulties, poor finance and property succession matters as well, were behind. Who inherited the properties after these deaths within surprisingly short term? It can be guessed easily.
2. There are doubts of Kei Komuro’s mother’s unlawful acceptance of survivors’ pension for years, cumulative amount approximately US$200K. Since there is a law that the survivors’ pension must be terminated once the widow gets married again or starts to live on cohabitation, namely shares day-to-day living and finance with somebody. There are multiple media articles that Kei’s mother actually had started to live on cohabitation but still she has been receiving the pension until today. Preparations of the accusation are actively in progress led by a Japanese journalist and it was also mentioned during the press conference where Mako and Kei Komuro appeared on October 26 2021.
3. There was a monetary dispute, approximately US$40K, between Kei Komuro’s mother and her ex-fiance. Kei’s mother insisted that it was given to her but ex-fiance insisted that Kei’s mother still has the obligation of paying back to him. It was years-length dispute and one major reason of time consuming progress was that Kei’s mother continued to decline the constructive meeting proposals by ex-fiance due to the reason of her ‘doctor stop’ sickness. It is fact that the dispute was finally resolved after Kei Komuro formally got married with Mako by means of the settlement money paid by Komuro family, eventually after Komuro family finally got a new wallet of Mako.
4. There were Mako’s behaviors that she was eagerly involved in commoners’ financial disputes and stood behind Kei Komuro and Komuro family, while she was still a member of royal family, in the course of the dispute of #3, although Japan royal family must not be involved in commoners’ dispute from the Japanese constitution point of view. Mako confessed and admitted that she did that at the press conference on October 26.
All the above monetary troubles are never respectfully recognized by broad range of Japan citizens.
Furthermore, Kei spent his most recent 3 years to the law study at Fordham University as of 2021 autumn, first one year as a student of LLM course. Since JD degree requires at least 3 years study at JD course and Fordham formally does not allow the transfer from LLM to JD, it is highly likely true that Kei’s position as of today is well before possessing JD degree in spite of the media reports that Kei is pursuing BAR license. It is fact that once the name of Kei Komuro was listed as a Fordham JD graduate but it was quietly erased later. The reason is unknown. This is another objective finding. It implies that Kei’s ability, suitability and eligibility as a lawyer should have been demonstrated in public in a fair manner prior to the marriage.
So far, Japan citizens generally had consistent respects on royal family as a symbol of the nation. But now, they are questioning themselves, with rather sad feeling, whether this marriage is really a good idea for Mako herself and Japan citizens’ united respects on royal family. There is a serious concern that the marriage could be a pollution for the relation between royal family and Japan citizens . Since royal family is the symbol of the nation of Japan, it would be very hard for Japan citizens to be indifferent about this marriage.
Her aunt, the present young emperor’s sister also married a commoner. Its been 18 yrs or so. A very nice looking couple.

Majority of Japanese people who are against this marriage don’t mind about Kei Komuro being a commoner. However,I myself would do everything to stop my own daughter marry him. Why ? Because there were “ at least” three * Suicides in a matter of one year within the family. First his father, then his paternal grandfather,say about three days after his own son‘s funeral,then his paternal grandmother a year later !!!!!!! We are just worried about her life outside of our country. Once one of the Japanese female royals who also have left the imperial family have been attempted being taken as a hostage in Japan. Obviously the public security is much more unstable in the US, she needs to be watched and protected since she’s still a legacy of Japanese people’s soul. And Komuro needs to be reminded that he’s responsible for protecting his own wife.
They're going to be just fine, especially in NYC. That town has many celebrities and "high society" and "old money" people who have been there for literally generations living relatively normal lives, so folks like her are a "dime a dozen". Either Princess Beatrice or Eugenie of the UK had lived there for some time as a curator (or something) at an art museum. They're way better known than Princess Mako and still led fairly normal lives without press nor scrutiny and danger from the public. That's because there's no reverence for "royalty" in America. No one cares that much - if at all.
I know many around the world who have never been to the U.S. think that (for the most part) we are a bunch of wackos running around with guns and it's all scary and crazy. I also wanted to add that there are tens of thousands of Japanese people that are there, so besides her husband, she could reach out to them to help her become more acclimated to her new home.
And I would imagine she will have countless talks and visits from her family, so I'm sure that will also help.

Plainly put, the Japanese choice for "males only" passing on that status means that the line is far more "pure" to the original "dynastic line" than one that allows female members to pass on the title (such as the case with most European Royal lines where females can become the monarch). Given that the Japanese Imperial family is the oldest royal "pure" line in the world, there is little reason for change. Moreover, the current Imperial family is only one of six "cadet lines". Even if this "first" line stops having male heirs, a choice can be made by "reactivating" (after World War ll, the other lines lost their status) any one of the other lines.

@@set3777 surely she will get tons of offers, but for now her abdication maybe too hot for the government to get involved. Royals are separate from the ruling government and a family member (former princess) of the Imperial family being given a position in foreign service may not be the wise move just yet. She could still become one later but only after the dust has settle and if her stay in New York is deemed ‘honorable’ in the eyes of whom ever the future government is.
A factor in giving her a position in the embassy is she could be treated as a diplomat, hence affording her security and keeping her within the Japanese sphere of influence even-though she’s thousands of miles away.
