I'm an American and I love self-deprecating humor and banter. I have no problems with it so continue on doing it Karl. If you shall so please
As an American, I can honestly say I know what "banter" is. It's the traditional blood and oats pudding boiled in a hogs bladder and consumd on Saint Andrew's Day before singing Robbie Burns famous poem "Auch! Me Olden Breeches aitch the crotche "...We all learn this as schoolchildren.
4:05 - Chapter 1 - The expanded role of science
7:15 - Chapter 2 - The english speaking world
11:10 - Chapter 3 - Coffeehouses & cafes
15:10 - Chapter 4 - The opposition of the church
19:35 - Chapter 5 - The slave trade
23:50 - Chapter 6 - The age of revolution
25:30 - Conclusion
Romans wrote sarcasm on the walls of their latrines.
Man walking down Roman street sees old friend and says, "I thought you were dead"? His friends says in response, "As you can see, I am not", the man then retorts, "Yes, but the man who said you were dead is more reliable than you".
Nice to know contrarians existed in all forms form coffe houses to trolls in Stewart
How about you listen facts giving to you instead of giving opinions about things you don't now nothing about.
I miss FactFiend, but I'm glad I can get my Karl fix
I tried to watch that dreck but its so bad. Its hard to stomache this chanel now that karl is here. That other dude that is occasionally on is far better(not the simon)
Excellent script Larry. I really liked how you had Karl getting twitchy in quite a few places. Well done. Cheers from Tennessee
Karl, there may be Americans who don't have a sense of humor----but fie on them! Lots of us enjoy your asides and jokes.
Yes, indeed... Karl, I find your history lessons very 'entertaining'. Job well done.
Descartes, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Adam smith, David Hume, John Locke, Voltaire, Montesquieu, or Jonathan swift for next biographics
Or Thomas Jefferson, or Queen Anne, or King George III, or John Adams.
"The role of England during the enlightentment..." and then go on to describe a bunch of Scottish thinkers.
England in a nutshell
British thinkers north and south of Gretna played equal parts.
Most of what I know of the enlightenment comes through a pretty serious study of Thomas Jefferson, which I'm finding is inadequate due to it being through the one lens. I noticed Freemasons got a mention, and as a US Freemason, I'm gathering that UK Masons are perhaps, just perhaps a slightly different animal based on Norman Pilcher's book, but I don't know how honest that book is. A very nice video which is well done.
Americans love self-deprecating humor and lighthearted banter.
Loving that gif of Clarkson in the Ariel Atom at 12:14. I tried that in a Gotham racing once and there's just no point in using 1st gear, it's over in less that a second.
Suggestion karl: Francis II/I The last Holy Román Emperor and the first Emperor of austria
Wait ✋️ you want us to follow your social media to see your Smallwood? 😮
"Massive own goal there, Britain!" - says the Scot...
😂😂😂
Love your tattoo!!
Thank you for hosting my friend very good👍
Another work that is (most likely) satire but often gets taken at face-value is Machiavelli's The Prince.
Seperation of state and church in England when the monarch is literally the head of the church? Granted this role didn't have much effect on gouvernment AFAIK but still.
jump to 1:08 for the start
Common Sense by Thomas Paine is a good read as long as you read it in the context of the times.
Americans do know what banter is and I do like it from time to time.
If we don't believe your small wood we can find it on social media. Got it.
1:07 litterly everything in history ever
Why so long between when you record it & release it ?
Yes! Religion involved in government is a BAD idea!! ☮
Whenever I hear the term "Enlightenment", I remember that episode in "The Flash" wherein the "Thinker" aka Professor Devoe tries to turn mankind into imbeciles😆
8:59 no please keep making fun of us, we kinda deserve it lol
then coffee was replaced by absinthe
Damn, early again! Happy days!
You are getting better at this Karl. Just keep trying for authenticity and own it :)
Wow. You’re doing his exact speaking rhythm, speed and intonation now lol
Thanks for the video 👍🏻
You kind of look like a younger Geddy Lee.
Era-defining intellectual works being fueled by caffeine. Checks out.
by the way, cafes at that time (at least from the video) seemed to be much more social than what I'm used to today
8:25 wealth does make a person better tho
9:00 it's true. We are a very defensive lot.
The French still drink breakfast coffee out of dishes. Literally a cup without a handle.
That's called "saucer and blow" and was quite popular all over. It allows one to drink it fast by cooling it off. It wasn't allowed to sit dormant in the saucer. Americans started thinking it was annoying because of the slurping noise that accompanied the consumption and instituted bans at individual coffee houses and the practice faded... except in the southeast US where it continued.
Thanks for the video Karl!
What happened to Simon😢
You're amazing Karl! Hope You stay here for a LONG TIME ❤❤❤❤
Enlightenment philosophy and philosophical frameworks are not a threat to Christianity, but rather the use of Enlightenment frameworks in understandings theology. If you use Enlightenment frameworks to understand God or scripture you will completely misunderstand. David Hume correctly established you cannot deduce an “ought” from an “is”. Enlightenment philosophy investigates what is. Theology investigates how we ought to act in relation to one another. They are fundamentally different areas of analysis, though both sides continually fail in applying this distinction.
God's word is the truth. We ought to follow God.
Do people really not believe your last name is Smallwood. I get it if your last name was Weepecker or Bighammer, but Smallwood?
Hey. You remember his name...right? Get it now?
You don't have to apologize or reassure the world of HOW TERRIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE YOU FEEL repeating words that are not your own, spoken by people you didn't know, and who committed crimes you yourself had NO HAND IN. For god's sake do you also want to apologize for future generations while you're at it?
Rousseau was Swiss, not French...
You killed Fact Fiend, Karl. Quit plugging it.
He stopped fact fiend as he no longer enjoyed it, something he stated would happen years ago. He is showing anywhere he could be found
2nd 😀
Wait... Where's the bald dude???
He's not presented this channel for months, where have you been? Karl has been presenting for AGES now... do you even biographics bro?
He died. 😂
Thumbnail made me think it was a Simon Whistler video. Just gunna leave this on 0:03 and head off
I really find the cautionary stoppage to be annoying and history is history and u shouldnt fear what you talk about next… there was lots of history you left out but made a whole chapter on slavery so thats on you dude. Dont make us uncomfortable with you because you cant speak facts without blushing like a school girl… american banter for ya mate
Comment section needs enlightenment
This a good video, but it's not a biography.
It's history and includes biographic info on several people. I like it
The Enlightenment is a euphemism if I've ever heard one.
You prefer monarchy and theocracy?
@@TheDanEdwards Sure. At any rate it's better than what we have.
@@caffeineoverload7773 No one should take you seriously.
Amen to that!
@@TheDanEdwards Yes, please take the meta-Marxist seriously, they represent the new theocracy insinuating itself throughout our culture. The power of story sans-fact and truth.
These "Enlightened' people were so great or enlightened now were they?
You are a prime example of someone who hears what they want to hear. You are incapable of seeing the entire age in the totality of its circumstances.
They were, at times, criminally enlightened.
This was the time after the dark ages. Go look that up, and compare the two.
How about you listen facts giving to you instead of giving opinions about things you don't now nothing about.
@@Mecha82 my statement is true. Looking at it from my perspective "they" the so called "great scholars" of the time were not " enlightened" to know that the enslavement of a group of people was wrong yet still keep them enslaved for your own selfish gain is not enlightenment. That's the problem people refuse to see the wrong in history and then try and hide the truth by making excuses for the past. I stand by what I said "THEY WERE NOT ENLIGHTENED"
@@ripn929707 Defense of ignorance is complicity. You are making excuses for people who were clearly wrong in how they treated and thought of one group of people.
@@jackiegillyard758 It pointless to argue with someone who chooses to be obtuse. All you heard was the part about slavery.
What you seem to ignore is that prior to the "Age of Enlightenment " having any of these opinions would mean being ostracized and the very least, and executed in any of a number of horrific ways. Enlightenment does not come in huge leaps and bounds, it is incremental.
Plenty of people like yourself had enlightened ideas. The question is, would you be so cavalier with speaking truth to power if you had seen other burned at the stake for the same? I bet youd keep your mouth shut.
Give us back Simon.
Give Karl a chance.
Simon isn't coming back so you need to accept it and give Karl a chance.
Simon's accent is so thick I can't understand what he says half the time. Then there's his penchant for Simon going off on weird tangents about his personal life having nothing to do with the subject discussed. I prefer Karl
Yeah bring back Simon!
@@Mecha82 I always feel like a big bro explaining myths to a younger sibling while watching Simon's vids. I have no hatred towards Karl, but he's just an another RUclipsr to me.
Enlightment is well cool and all, until you know what the revolutionary did to their own people and france history and legacy
The legacy of the French Revolution is a positive one. Europe benefitted in the long run from the ideals of the French Revolution.
I love this channel but this guy needs to give the report and reserve his opinion.
You keep on saying the ‘State’ when talking about the Atlantic slave trade. It was in fact individuals and companies that ran the slave trade. Especially the British slave trade. Slavery was never legal in the modern state of England and Britain. Outlawed by William the first.
Also, as a matter of fact, indentured workers Britain had similar, if not worse, conditions than the slaves that got to America.
Of course slavery was an abomination but don’t blame Britain, blame individuals.
Britain was basically responsible for the destruction of the slave trade, since they owned the seas at the time, but this new guy knows very little about history.
I doubt indentured servants had it worse than actual slaves captured and forced from their homeland. Indentured servants chose to be employed by the people who "kept" them in order to pay for their land, or passage to a new country, etc. they were not forced to live in filth, their own waste, whipped or beaten into submission, locked in boxes, killed, raped or not allowed basic freedoms. In fact indentured servants were employed as overseers of those enslaved. And at some point they could leave freely whereas the only way a slave was freed was usually through death. Britain gained a lot of wealth through the enslavement of people from the continent of Africa and they gained a lot of wealth from the jewels of Africa i.e. "blood diamonds" which they refuse to return even to this day' so I seriously don't that indentured servants had it worse than enslaved people.
If "Slave Trade" was illegal, why did Britain make it illegal and only enforced that new law in 1807. USA did the same in that year.
You could buy a man in the USA
@@MrSimonw58 no sadly not anymore
Always skip the first minute to avoid the irritating intro.
No Simon no subscription it was a good run goodbye
Was that bit with you saying you're "uncomfortable" really necessary? The vast majority of subscribers to this channel are adults with the reasoning ability and emotional maturity to not get offended at the subject matter being presented, so long as it's presented accurately. You come across as immature and unprofessional with that display.
Most of them can't even get over the fact that Simon isn't presenting this channel any more. Let's not give them more credit than they deserve, eh?
You give the audience WAY too much credit.
Adults are allowed to feel uncomfortable and are allowed to express such. It’s what you do with it that defines maturity, such as him recognizing “wow these attitudes are fucked up.”
It's because nowadays people get offended by seeing just a historical quote with a word they don't like, and they assume that the person who says the quote agrees with the one who came up with the quote in the first place.
We don't understand banter!?...no we don't understand bad banter.
and you call yourself a fan of history. Our banter started the USA on her path to freedom, and got us into more troubles than acceptable.
And
You are proving the point
Somehow, women don't enter into this video. So I am going to not like it.
Anyone who tells you Americans don't get self-deprecating gumor doesn't know many Americans
