  • Chain tensioner: 2 to 3 hours ($75 / $345 / $550)
    In this video I helped my brother replace a timing chain tensioner in his 2003 Jaguar XJ8. This process is the same for many of the V8 Jaguar, Land Rover and Ford Thunderbird vehicles between 1998 through 2003, maybe more.
    This did not fix the noise. Actually had a bad starter.

    When ordering new cover seals, you will need 28 of the small round ones.

    Thank you for this video. It's the best one I've seen on replacing the tensioner. This morning I started hearing a little bit of what I thought was knocking but as the day went on it started selling more like a chain fortunately only put about 15 miles on it so it looks like along with replacing the valve cover gasket I will be replacing the tensioner. Mine is a 2000 so it does have the plastic ones that I know fail. I'm glad it happened now so I can do it once with intake removed and not do it twice.

    Love your instruction Robert...Now, it would be prudent to add the 3.9 in your title which is also a part of the Jaguar AJV8 family, specifically the 02-05 Thunderbird. The Thunderbird uses the AJ30 and AJ35...Same tensioner issues, especially the 02 models...Add the Ford (Jaguar) 3.9 to your title so this great video reaches those owners.

    I'm having the same problem with my 4.4. Did replacing the tensioner cure the rattle? Thanks for the video!

    Hello. How do I find TDC on a 2001 Jaguar XKR 4.0? I cant find any timing marks, getting ready to replace tensioners and timing chains. If I roll the flywheel to the locking position ay the crank senser, is that TDC? thank your for your time.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  3 года назад

      TDC means that a piston is at its highest travel position. So you can pull the spark plug out, stick a long narrow rod in the hole, roll the engine around by hand and stop when the rod is at its highest travel.

    I recently purchased a 98 XJ8. Thought it had a cylinder wash issue from the way it sound when it turned over, it wasn't. Now i'm sure it's a timing issue. My question is how do i know when the timing is properly set.

      I have no idea. You may want to check JaguarForums.com.

      Correct setting is when the crank shaft position sensor is replaced by the peg and locked in position, and the flats of those cams are flat, such that the locking bar can be installed. That's it.

    Did you replace just the upper tensioners? I am thinking of doing mine but I read that there is also problem with the guides and the lower tensioners. They also crack and the chain may come loose.

      @@RobertDIY hey just putting this out there for anyone that has an 05 with no holes in the exhaust cam sprocket don’t be afraid to pull that thing off of their mark all of your cam caps bolts with a paint pin before you move them if you don’t have a torque wrench, I change my tensioner out because it was getting stuck and wasn’t pumping the oil up and it runs like a beast now.
