    Tactics in FM are usually formed by the manager deciding how the team should play and training the team accordingly. Reverse Engineering a tactic is setting up the style of play along the lines of "can't do it, don't do it"
    I have had huge success with every team using this method of tactical styling. I Part 3 we are looking at player instructions

    Phil, came across your channel recently. Subscribed and liked, also put a mate on it.
    It’s how fm content should be delivered in my opinion, fun and informative.
    Really enjoyed the 30 minute tutorial on Watford.
    Although a “ hardened “ fm player it made me look at tactics differently.
    I completely agree now, on reverse tactics. I’ve used your knowledge on my Bournemouth save, season 25/26 now.
    5 games left and looks like European football!
    So keep that content coming. I’m enjoying kicking some balls so much more now.

      Thank you so much for your feedback and your support for the channel. Much appreciated.
      Every year the developers change some coding so that the game works differently and every year tactically is a new challenge. With the new attacking movement this year people were finding defending very difficult. This tactical stuff began by trying to find a way to be the best defensive teams. Once that was done it was a simple transition to the tactic as a whole...I find it difficult to lose now lol....hoping two things...firstly SI don't issue a patch and I wake up one day and find this doesn't work anymore lol and secondly I haven't cursed myself and don't go and lose all my games in the livestream tonight lol
      Sounds like your Bournemouth save is going really well too :)

    Dear Mr. Phil.
    I'm a newcommer to the channel and am slowly falling in love with it. I absolutely adore your content and the way you deliver it. I especially look forward to seeing more of your guides, which have been lifesavers for me as a (relatively) new FM player.
    I have a small dilenma: I'm relatively new to football. While I have seen quite a few games in my youth (live even) football had never been something I was particularly interested in. But during the pandemic I tried out FM for the first time and I became addicted.
    The problem is that I'm still pretty clueless when it comes to tactics: the roles, how role combinations affect player movement on the field, what positions will collide with one another, what roles go with certain formations, etc. For a very long time I simply downloaded pre-made tactics, but often found that the fun factor would quickly die out when I was simply either winning everything or losing and not knowing why.
    Being such a connaisseur of football, I was wondering if you had any tips as to where I should start learning about football tactics, for someone going into it with no prior knowledge whatsoever. I often find most explanations too overwhelming and I wanted to start from the very basics.
    Thank you so much for your time and attention. All the best.

      Thank you for your kind words....I know how you feel and it wasn't too long ago that I decided that it was time to learn how tactics work. There is no easy solution but to watch how others are doing it and why. Come and join us in the live streams and watch what I do. I try to involve people in decision making. Experimentation is also good. Play a save just for that and play games where result is not important but watch how things change when you change something. The in game ready made tactics are also a good place to start. They are balance3d and will do a good job....use them to experiment with roles and instructions etc.

    As an experienced FM player my advice is just to give in to the FM gods, you can prep, analyse and set up as much as you like, but then your goalkeeper will break his leg kicking his own defender in the face while conceding an own goal 🫠😅

      That's interesting.....At the moment I'm using very few player instructions in all my saves. Basically applying "if you can't do it don't do it." However none of my saves are with top teams and I am sure that as the squad gets better in each save I will add more PIs. It's so interesting though mate seeing the different ways people see the game and the tactics.

    Hi Phil, I’ve been playing FM for over 20 years but this series has still given lots of helpful tips! Thank you.
    All of the teams you’ve used though are decent teams in their respective leagues, so I do wonder, how do you go about setting up when you are potential relegation fodder? And especially how your ‘don’t do what you can’t do’ mantra works with

    • @fm-oldmanphil

      Thank you for your kind feedback....In the Live stream Notts co. won league two comfortably. Predicted to come 2nd so was relatively easy. In league one we were predicted to finish 17th. We had no money or wage budget and only 15% transfer revenue. That's when I started looking at this method. When I first thought "If we can't do it, don't do it" Since then applied it to all teams.
      It's not about the league that you are in. Notts Co. are the top passing team in League 1. We have an average rating as a squad of 9.72 for passing. despite being the best in the league, 9.72 means we are NOT good at passing. Man city are a very good passing team. Their average rating for passing is I think between 14 and 15.
      It's about how much risk are you willing to to take. I'll take more risks with Man city's passing rating.
      One of the most dangerous things to do in FM is to counter attack. If you lose the ball when you are counter attacking, You will be very vulnerable at the back. If you don't counter attack but hold shape, you create less but are much stronger defensively. Balance of risk.

      @@fm-oldmanphil Interesting. Thanks for the reply! I’m fairly new to your channel so I haven’t managed to catch up with your livestreams yet (my Dad is a big Notts county fan) I’ve only just managed to catch up with your Pentagon challenge (I’m a bit of an Orlando Pirates fan though!)
      How about with the worst playable teams on FM? The teams with the players who can’t pass, run, shoot, dribble, defend, etc. Surely not ‘we can’t do anything so we won’t do anything!’ 😂 Do you change strategies with them? Or are they, as of yet, unexplored?

    • @fm-oldmanphil
      @fm-oldmanphil  7 месяцев назад +2

      @@manchlax7399 Orlando pirates....one of my current biggest rivals haha...you ask some really good questions and of course if we were to compare the attributes of Knaphill (my home Village, which apparently is in the mod for level 10) and Arsenal, there will be a huge gulf between the two. Arsenal can do things really well and Knaphill not so well. So I would take more risks with a team that can do things well. Not taking risks means being more controlled and not getting out of shape. A team that stays in shape will be harder to break down than a team that takes countless risks constantly. You will not create as much but you are becoming defensively solid. Depending on where they are predicted to finish and their attributes...very small teams will need to be more defensively solid until the squad improves. Small teams have strengths...things they do well, they will just not be so many. Tactic development looks first at a teams strength before balancing that against risk.
      The reason why you would play more direct with tall physical players in lower leagues is because technically we would be useless and we cause ourselves more problems than the worth of it by holding on to it, but also because of opposition weaknesses dealing with high tempo direct play. Remember they are defensively useless too. Lower lines of defence may be more effective for very small teams, although I have not tested this. Maybe a project on thee way now :)

    Great video Phil. Just one thing - I've always given players with better decision making less individual instructions as they are better able to make decisions in a given situation. You seem to do the inverse (as you did with Asprilla). What are your thoughts on this?

    • @fm-oldmanphil
      @fm-oldmanphil  7 месяцев назад +1

      thank you so much for your feedback. It could look like that is what I did but his decision making and concentration were 12 and 11 respectively. He isn't able to make decisions on a consistent basis. Lets take dribble more or less. The player will by default dribble some of the time when unclicked. I think, although I may be wrong, that by clicking dribble more, it doesn't mean all the time...I think you are telling him to dribble more but he has to decide when is the right time. I might be wrong but it does seem to work for me. That fact that he isn't great at decision making although not bad...I feel that not overloading him works better for me...I've no idea if that makes sense!

  • @benj1440

    Great video
    What about player traits? Do you add player instructions to enhance their player trait or do they naturally perform them regardless? For example, Asprilla has a player trait of ‘tries killer balls often’ but you kept ‘take more risks’ off for passing

    • @fm-oldmanphil
      @fm-oldmanphil  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks mate.....I believe it isn't necessary....player traits are stronger for the player than any other instruction you give him. Therefore he will try killer balls. I don't think you need to instruct him now to take more risks. If a player has the trait to run with the ball....no need to ask him to dribble more.

    Be aware teamwork is also a needed attribute to follow up tactical instructions, here what an older manual of FM mentions about it.
    Team work: How well the player follows tactical instructions and works for and alongside his team-mates. A team full of players with a high rating here will work better as a unit. Players with lower ratings will slack off and not ‘buy in’ to the team ethos.
