Amen! I concentrated so much on the takeaway thinking that was why I was hitting behind the ball, etc. When I just started to straighten my right leg ball contact improved drastically. I don't even think about the takeaway, it just takes care of itself along with my left arm being much straighter generating a larger swing diameter resulting in more power. Amazing how just extending the right leg cures so many swing faults.
Just got a lesson from a PGA pro today. His finding after watching me hit balls for 10 minutes was this very same thing. You did a much better job of explaining to me how to execute this motion. I was struggling on the range trying to drive into the lead leg like he wanted me too but the whole key is what was happening with my trial leg which was still flexed on backswing. Thank you for such clear instruction
Golf mechanics / concepts is fascinating - always good to see a video of an experienced , kniwledgable & articulate golf professional. Been recently looking into the knee/hips plane & the downhill concept.
I've been watching instructional videos on RUclips for years and you are at the top of the best instructors I've came across keep up the great work I would like to send you my swing for you to look at for a lesson
Tried this at the range the other day. Was able to get more power and faster swing speed.. translating to my 7 iron jumping distance 140m to 160m. Can't wait to perfect this
Hey Kerrod, I have had this problem for over 20 years and have had many lessons and none of the teachers could help me understand how to get to my front leg. This is extremely helpful and I appreciate the way you showed and explained it! I now have a chance of improving this aspect of my swing.
After watching this video I went out and hit a large bucket of balls and wow what a difference. Thank you for this video. I too learned many years ago to keep that right knee or both knees flexed on the backswing.
For years I have been coming over the top and finishing completely unbalanced in my follow through and have been unable to get my right shoulder to stay back to get my arms inside, have been doing a lot to compensate for it, my swing always produces a fade but still had the arm strength to hit the ball 260-300(never consistent) all I had to change was my legs and the rest started to click, I managed to hit 10 near perfect draws in a row with an 8 iron and my driver at the range after watching this and extending my right leg instead of bending it for power like a baseball swing and my 17 years of lacrosse shooting motion habits. thank you for this video I hope to start the second half of my life where teeing off isn’t dreadful.
I've been getting lessons for two years, and you're the first pro to actually address my problem. I wonder if lessons are a money grab or lack of knowledge.
Great instruction, Kerrod! Appreciate you explaining the trail leg straightening in great detail. However, I, like several others in the comment section, am curious about using the driver and if there is any compensation movements since one would not hit down. Thanks!
I used to keep my trail leg straight but was told later in a lesson that I should keep flex in it. Result has been lots of hitting behind the ball. Now I know why! Thanks.
I noticed this about my swing , when i was much better at golf my right leg would straighten. For some reason i was told somewhere that knee flex was needed but i think that has really thrown my swing off and made it impossible to correct for me. Gonna go try to find my old move again.
Grateful: excellent positive oriented description of how the knees move..question: what do the knees do, if much, on short shots( 5 to 30 yards)? Haven't seen anyone describe that🤣Stressdr
Kerrod, Thanks for the great content!!Looking at some super slow mo of pga proff golfers, trying to identify the squat I see the following. Some players squat via an increased knee flex, others seemingly have very little knee flex but more shoulders down ( almost bending more forward at the hip) your video here looks like yr left knee increases flex in transition. I identified this by hiding the top half of the body (in the slo mo) and focussing only on the bottom half and the hiding the bottom half and studying the upper half. What comment do you have on what seems to be different ways of getting the same result?
Hi Kerrod, I just subscribed. Thanks for the lessons on proper use of the legs. Basic question, how do you start your downswing? Another way to ask is, what body part(s) do you start with?
Hi there, thanks for the sub! Here's a list of how the body moves in the backswing: Weight Shift: The body begins the backswing by shifting the weight onto the inside of the back foot (right foot for right-handed golfers). Hip Rotation: As the weight shifts, the hips start to turn away from the target, creating torque and coil in the body. Shoulder Turn: Following the hip rotation, the shoulders turn to continue the coil, with the lead shoulder (left shoulder for right-handed golfers) moving under the chin. Arm Extension: Simultaneously with the shoulder turn, the arms extend to allow for a wider swing arc and more power. Wrist Hinge: As the club moves back, the wrists hinge naturally to maintain the angle between the clubshaft and the lead forearm. Head Position: While there is some rotation, the head maintains its position relative to the ball, with a slight tilt away from the target.
I am assuming that your weight is evenly distributed when at address. When you are at the top of the swing, has your weight moved over your back leg? If so, how much?
2 questions. 1. In the downswing, are you basically half squatting your left leg, for a right handed golfer, and pushing down? 2. Where does the weight need to be transferred to in the left foot? The outer side, more towards the heel, or toward the toes?
Been really working on straightening my rear leg on my backswing, and it's really increased my clubhead speed, my 6 iron in now around 98-100, and my driver is around 117. I had some video shot of myself today, and I noticed my left leg is still a little bent at contact, and my hips are only opened a few degrees. I'm hitting the ball really far, good drives around 320, but some days accuracy is a little off. I am dealing with a torn meniscus in the left knee, and maybe that's the reason I'm not kicking it straight. Is this something I should still try and change?
I used to do the same when I was young but my later golf instructor corrected that and I went down hill and hit it shorter then ..golf is a circle game…
Not sure about that straight leg in the backswing - I think the braced right leg has worked for years - you only collapse into the outside of your right knee if you let it - and thats pretty hard to do - swaying happens agreed - but may well happen with this raising of the right hip as you straighten your right leg in the back swing. the straight right leg has been taught by Moe Norman in the past down into impact. I have no issues with that I straighten my right leg and roll my foot, however not into a straightening left leg and twisting into a locked left knee knee. (Which I see as a bigger issue)
This is the reason I can only drive the ball 280 yards, I can't use my knees like that. Genetic disorder where my left knee dislocates at random times and my right one has more of a subluxation, doesn't go all the way out but enough where I collapse and cant get up for about 10-15 minutes. Unlucky me. My only saving grace is that im a lefty. So my stronger knee is my lead leg, but if I "squat" and turn laterally at the same time like you need for power, my knee will just pop out.

Your videos are a must for any recreational golfer who wants to improve their game.
Thanks.
Good man lad. Do you pushed off back leg at all? Or from that front leg flexed your driving into that front leg?
It simply happens as a reaction to the other movements before it!
Game changer, great video! Excellent instructions, I was using my legs the wrong way.
Great, good luck!
Very Good, simple, easy to understand and very importend. Thanks
Glad you think so!

Very good demonstration and explanation -Thank U so much for this video
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant lesson, Thankyou!.
Just watching the USPGA and Rory teeing off
and his left leg straightens just like yours!
Thanks!
Nice vid and good to see you in the UK lately.
Excellent presentation Kerrod
Thanks for the visit 👍

Excellent for max power and will fix that over the top move. Thanks.
Thanks 👍
Superb short video on a much neglected topic!
Love to hear it! Thanks for the comment 👍
Great explanation on the how the legs work.

Excellent video clearly put over.
great drill coach, gotta use that ground for power!

Answered my question as well - does the left knee initiate the downswing? This is gold!
Incredible lesson!!! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Many Thanks 👍
Dude, your videos are the best 👍
Glad you like them!
Many Thanks 👍
Are you pushing into the ground with your body? Also glad you spoke about the fall, very important for re- centering.
Thanks for your comment, I'm glad I was able to help you out! To answer your question, your weight transfer pushes your body into the ground.
@@kerrodgraygolf ty, enjoyed the video
Great video
Thanks for the visit 👍
Thank you mate . 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You’re welcome!
I feel a session coming soon on the impact and follow through part of the swing and L knee ending in flexion!!!
stack and tilt?
Doubling the flex in the left leg is a great feel 👍👍
Thanks Mate 👍
Is it the same c9ncept for driver with legs?
Great advice 👍
Hope it helps!

What about driver we dont want to hit down on it do we more hitting up on it to gain a bigger launch angle ?
What change in leg flex do you make for driver swing? Thx
would you say that leg work is the same with a driver?
Fantastic work
Thank you!
Hey Kerrod
I have some prostate issues. When I swing it hurts. Do you suggest prostate milking? Are there professional prostate milkers in the pga?
I do this naturally but my right left gets a bit stuck up the top of my backswing. Any way if countering this?

Hello, Peyton Dickerson! The left knee will reflex and the pressure will go towards the ball of the left foot in transition.
@@kerrodgraygolf thank you very much, I appreciate the reply.

Should I be pushing off my left leg through the swing

💥
Great video I have noticed I get 20 yds by using this leg swing
I used to do the same when I was young but my later golf instructor corrected that and I went down hill and hit it shorter then ..golf is a circle game…
Do it without swaying tho on the downswing. The pros don't sway upper body like you're showing.

280 yards yeah lifes a bitch! Would love to be able to drive 280 :)
Exactly! My first thought too. I need driver 3 wood to have any chance of reaching par 4's over 380 yds
