Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre, 4K Portrait Animatronics (1st Store) San Jose, California 1979

- This is the segment from the Australian Broadcasting Commission show 'Four Corners' titled "New Eatery Fad" from 1979. This fad of course has lasted over 40 years and is still going strong today.
The footage in this newsreel is the only video footage known to exist from the original pilot Pizza Time Theatre location on Winchester Blvd in San Jose, California. It is also the only footage of the Winchester "portrait" style animatronics, and the only video footage of Crusty the Cat (an original member of the Pizza Time Players who was quickly discontinued in favor of Mister Munch). The end sequence with Dolli Dimples was filmed across town at the second Pizza Time Theatre location on Kooser Rd.
ShowBizPizza.com (with the help of super-fan CEC Master) licensed this footage from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 2019 and shared it with the fandom as a 'thank you' for supporting us for 20+ years. We're once again sharing this rare footage, watermark-free and upscaled to 4k 60fps, as a thank you to the fandom for supporting our website and tuning in to our RUclips Channel.

*Chuck and Cheese after completely removing the animatronics and replacing them with a fucking dance floor:💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪*
I know I'm so upset over that and they're losing complete touch with what started Chucky's in the first place and also the animatronics were to entertain the adults that's why some of the skits had some of that humor and everything in it because the adults couldn't go play in the ball pits while I suppose you could but most probably wouldn't so they needed something to occupy them while the kids were doing stuff it was a place that was intended for something to do for everyone and a place to relax and get to do something and see that you didn't get to see anywhere else
Not even a dance floor, A WALL WITH A TV ON IT.
give me my chuck back
Does anyone actually watch them though? I hardly see anyone interested, I would care less if they just sold them on instead of destroying them. They did it in 1984, so I don't see the issue
My niece had her birthday party there. They had a blast, but it definitely has changed from what i remember
Then: $10 is a premium price.
Now: At least $100 if you want pizza and an hour of playing games.
Well actually considering today's prices and how much things have certainly increased that's not really that bad because I just went to Chuck e cheese's on my birthday a week ago and got a pizza and it was $24 but I didn't think that that was bad with today's prices and that's pretty much what you would pay just about anywhere else and the pizza was really good and then I come to find out that it's not going to be too much longer and then it's going to be Chuck e cheese's anniversary coming up so I'm glad really glad now that I went
I just wish the Chucky's that I had gone to would have had the animatronic show still cuz I would have loved to watch them all perform again
this is a masterpiece!
hi!!❤
you should do true nightmare all challenges it would be really funny i think
“Which gives youngsters time to get hooked on the electronic games”
“A computerized cabaret of puppet-like characters”
It truly was ‘77 huh
I’m really interested to see how this would play in 4K!
Love watching older footage. I wish the pizza still looked like that ❤
I Agree as a fan id rather eat it like this then today's like dont get me wrong i actually like cec's today's pizza i just wish they didn't look so lazyish especially the stupid rat poison rumors they did on our boy
@@TSMASB they would be sued if there was rat poison in there

According to a few people who were close to Nolan Bushnell, the pizza at that store was not very good.
In 1978, Ted Dabney (whom co-founded Atari in 1972 and left in early 1973) went to the first Pizza Time Theatre and afterwards gave Nolan a less than stellar review saying "It was dirty and loud. There was children screaming and when there wasn't, the video arcade machines threatened to drown the kids out. I had no idea when my pizza was ready until I went to the counter and finally got it. I took it to my table to try and it was not very good."
Nolan said he could take care of the cleanliness part, but the noise was a major part of the place and was just kids having fun. As for the pizza, Nolan didn't care how good or bad it was. He wasn't in it for the pizza. He wanted kids pumping quarters into the video game machines.
In the footage, there seems to be people downing the pizza okay so maybe it wasn't as bad. Who knows?
I'd go there just for the animatronics@@AutisticJoker88
Imagine how cool it would be if they made 1, 2, or even 3 old pizza time theaters that would be amazing
It's not just 4K, but it's quite smooth and better!
I can notice the difference between the original 2019 video and this.
I liked how back then they were made out of latex and fiberglass. It gave them a slightly realistic but still cartoony feel
That and they also took off of how hounds and all looked in that time. Because I grew up in the 70s so I remember very well people walking around wearing flannel shirts having corn cob pipes and hats like Jasper head and even people with the bushy eyebrows 😎
They still were, but the fabric and the homemade design gave it that feel.
This was incredible to watch. I can't believe just years ago we thought we'd never have Winchester footage yet here we are. The feeling of discovering old media thought to be lost is amazing, and I can't wait to see what other CEC stuff gets potentially uncovered in the future.
Also I never realized the games were in little rooms like that. The first store looks like it really was tiny (also super 70s) Plus it's kind of interesting to see how the 2nd gen 70s animatronics moved livelier than the later ones. And they kept Crusty even after Munch was made? Wow!
Pisqually's singing is legendary 🔥
He knows his line
Featuring the cast:
Chuck E. Cheese,
Jasper T. Jowls,
Pasqually,
The Wablettes,
Crusty the Cat,
Dolli Dimples.
What a coincidence this video was uploaded on the anniversary of Five nights at Freddy’s!

@@emagenevanhorn1543yeah but on the flip side, fnaf got me interested in animatronics. When fnaf first came out, I was scared of animatronics but that made me want to see them even more.
What kind of corporate slime would go and destroy their own history? CEC entertainment would. Thank you for this footage
I may be a nearly 14 year old teenager in 2024, but I wanna go all the way back in time to 1977 just to witness these animatronics. Bring them back omfg 😭😭😭

Me too!! I’ll be 14 in September and I would love to experience this in person. It’s just so fascinating to me and I love hearing about the old mechanics of these bots.
we all do and I will say this now young one... take my advice
wait until around the point you would be in college (18 to 21)

seriously tho, im 28 and went to chuck e cheese probably around 2003 and i DEFINITELY want to go back in time to this video timeframe. !!!
They did a good job with the movements on dolli dimples.
i wish that chuck e Cheese’s still looked like this
Yeah I know that reminds me of a saying that McCoy said in Star Trek once he says well that's the problem where do you go from up? So what CEC should have done was had a retro redo of their animatronics and have them be like this again instead of trying to see how many stores you can build and I can understand that point it's like well we got a good thing going let's make more of it put more effort into what you've already got make the ideas good stick with a classic and what works because if they like the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it and that's how you do it yeah of course some changes inevitable and you have to change a little bit to keep going but just don't go overboard with it
Excellent upscaling especially from an AI. I’m super impressed!
Mhmm!!?
Before this I never even noticed how beat up chuck e's hat is 5:37 🤯 thank you so much. GREAT work, congrats.
Chuck E Cheese and his friends look way different back then before I was even born 💜
This would exist around the time your parents were kids/teens back in the day. I know my mom did.
@@SuperFlashDriver My parents were born in the 50s so they got to see this version of Pizza Time Theatre AKA Chuck E Cheese
@@archangelrapheal5231 That's awesome, lucky for your parents to experience something I sadly never experienced back in the 70s and 80s.
@@SuperFlashDriver I like that name "Super Flash Driver", sounds like a name of a action packed movie that involves Nascar racing
@@archangelrapheal5231 Well Fun Fact: The name "SuperFlashDriver" was actually inspired by three different things and ideas I had in my house back in 2009/2010. The word "Super" being the "Super Nintendo" or "Superhero" anything related to something better than before. "Flash" and "Driver" were insipred by Flash Drives, aka USB flash Drives as well as the educational K-6 book series called "FlashKids Math/Reading" books that we used to ue back in 5th to 8th grade and such. And "Driver" referncing the video game "Driver I and II" and something you plug into the computer. So if you take the first letter of each name is "SFD' and that acronym can also mean "Special Forces Division/Department" or anything related to department divisions or organizations related to S.F.D. It also has the same three letter acronym as F.B.I, C.I.A, N.S.A, T.S.A., and D.H.S. to name a few. So it was inspired by governmental bodies, computers and electronics, video games, and home video/movie/tv media that is related to solving crime or basically talk about anything on the channel.
However, since 2018 I haven't uploaded a video because I don't have ideas at the moment of what I wanted to upload next, so it's been on the backburner for 5 years in favor of real life personal/family assistance, work, and events/appointments that occurs outside of RUclips. So while I do have the time to make videos, I'd rather watch other people's videos than my own videos, but that's just me. Also, considering the landscape of RUclips today compared to 14 years ago, it's not quite the same as it once was when I joined on January 1st, 2010, with my other accounts occuring in 2012 and 2014.
fucking crazy how a family dinner at chuck e cheese was almost twice as much as a normal pizza place at $10.
Well you figure you have a lot of employees doing things you have your equipment that you're running you have supplies that you have to get and even if you do buy supplies that perhaps a restaurant supply store and get a discount because you're buying in bulk you still have quite a bit of stuff you have to maintain so that's why stuff would cost more but look at it this way where else are you going to get to see and do an experience things like this?
And it has a lot to do with prices of time change too just like Kings Island I can remember back in 1984 you could take 20 or $40 to go to Kings Island with it only cost $12.95 to get in the park now it cost you around $50
Omg That Was Awesome I Love It! Better Then The Original!! 🐀🧀
Awesome and thanks for sharing!
This is fantastic I love seeing all this of the original animatronics too! 🙂
THANK YOU!!!
So eve after Munch was introduced they still had Crusty
Until about 1980
This looks mad! Well done

5:00 is a tressure trove for me and i love this due to it being a clean actual recorded clip and audio from the show room at the first location!
This looks so cool! One of the locations close to me was a PTT, so its interesting to see what it possibly looked like back in the day
I just love this footage 🥰 so cool.
Why does the? Righteous I mean the kitchen people looks like they're finites at freddy's employees

Wonderful restoration! Super clean, but the movements seem more fluid as well.
need to mention it was at *Winchester Ave,* San Jose, California
It’s in the description - and it’s notable that the end segment with Dolli was actually across town at the Kooser location.

I am very interested in the history of Chuck E. Cheese I wished I was able to tour the location
They REALLY knew what they were doing back then... Unlike now sadly
Yesssss
I love hearing him say *”Chuck E. Cheese’s”* 💀
I don't know about the "going strong" part, but great restoration
I have a question what happened to the second versions of the portrait bots from 1978
Some people say they're destroyed but i don't believe that. The earlier ones survived so why wouldn't the later ones.
*1979 Chuck e Cheese*: Shelf Stage Last ever 3 Stage: *I am not dying*
Since footage of Pasqually’s segment is shown, it’s possible it and a few others were edited to have the new voices or just the intro cut out of his segment so it’s just him and the Warblettes
Nice video ya Nitwit!
I like the old Chuck E. Cheese he’s more entertaining
I got tired of looking at fnaf performance vhs videos so I thought I’d see the real deal.

I have a video idea:
We have very few photos and footage of Winchester's portrait bots, but you know what we have even less documentation on? The cyberamics that replaced them in that same store. They were put in during 1980 and remained until the building closed in 85, yet there's not even a photo, video, or any other info on them. I think it be cool to shed some light on the later history of the Winchester store
I always wondered how the standard cyberamics (Because the portrait bots are also considered to be cybers as well) looked in Winchester. Especially with the store's unique layout, I wonder if they put the bots in the exact same place as before. Or if they remodeled the store to have a shelf setup
If we could find any info whatsoever we would love to share it. Honestly all we have in the archives is the auction notice from the newspaper when it closed. When we licensed this footage we got it sight-unseen and I had a sinking feeling it was going to be footage of regular cybers and not the latex/fiberglass ones. Thankfully they hadn’t swapped them out yet when this was filmed.
Would this mean there was a cyberamic Crusty? In my opinion, probably not, because when they got the cyberamics they would have also gotten Munch in place of him. But it depends, especially if you look at how long they would’ve wanted to have Crusty there before giving him the boot and making way for Munch.
Maybe In the future we could see the prototype portrait animatronics in action
Damn i wish we had something like that here im Brazil
We already got It, not so good but we had chIcO cheese, yeah, sad
Now we need Kooser Ave. in 4k 60 fps (if thats even possible)

I can see the details i didn't see before around the location
The pizza guy is the foxy of this place.
I wonder how weird it would be to have somewhat of a retro store, based off of pasqually. A real Pasquallys pizza and wings with maybe a studio C style pasqually retrofit.
1:40 you can hear the warblettes
I hate how Chuck E. Cheese removed all there animatronics and instead they put a freaking dance floors and giant screens!!😖😖🤌🏻🤌🏻💀💀😞😞

This looks great! What software did you use to upscale it?
It was Topaz Video AI, and a combination of a few different models cut together. Some models looked better on the portraits and background footage (while the close-ups of Gene looked a little overly textured in an unnatural way), so we just cut together the best views from a couple of upscales.
Nice!! Topaz is generally the best I've found, but that's really cool you cut a few different models together! It looks phenomenal.
does anyone know what the animatronics are saying in the showtape i guess i mean i know the crusty version of the showtape is lost and all

Will you guys visit the last 3 stage when it comes down to it 😢
That would be fun. And I'm sure that day is probably coming sooner than later. :(
I was wondering if you could try to restore the same 1979 Kooser Rd footage (the earliest footage of Mr. Munch and Reddy-like Helen Henny) in 4K as well? (if you guys do have one)
Possibly! We don’t have the original video file but it’s something we can try to upscale. 😊
@@showbizpizzacomYaya!!?
Could you possibly do the smile America ad?
I would like to know how the original footage was found,
And who found it
We’ve known about this footage for around 10 years now, as it was listed in an old company newsletter that we obtained in 2012. CEC Master did a lot of the footwork in contacting ABC to secure this clip (other fans had tried previously but ABC had not digitized their archives that far back at the time). But once he discovered they had it available in digital form he sent the info to us and we paid for the public license for the clip - sight unseen as all we had was a vague transcript with time stamps.
Could have been a hundreds of dollars bust because there was no solid indication it included portrait footage. Thankfully it paid off! 😅
Chuck's mouth isn't moving when he is talking! LOL!
It feels like I’m there in person
Maybe you were Maybe you werent
I think they should bring back the portrait bots back and other characters like crusty dolly dimples and more if they do that, I'm pretty sure they will be relevant again.
Not bring back the Portraits themselves since there is a few things wrong
the buildings are not built for those they would need to be bigger
second it must take a lot to maintenance them
third its too 70s
but i agree with you they should bring them back at least as puppets
@@tobysgamingworld1550 no I mean redesign the bots as a whole while staying faithful to there origin look.

Alright "bud" they look the way they do because the people behind cec don't know how to make good decisions. And if the kids really did like the way they look nowadays they would probably not be in debt or people would actually still talk about them.
