    • @joeldowell5059
      @joeldowell5059 Год назад +1

      That ram issue is the only problem I have with this big switch over to ARM. I know MacBooks before this weren't really user-upgradable, but having the ram soldered directly to the board makes it impossible to add in more modules in the future. I'm hoping that if/when PCs make the switch to ARM, they allow the user to upgrade things in the future so we don't have to throw out a PC every 10 years, but could instead just add more ram, or switch out other parts.
      Other than that though, ARM is incredible. There's a huge amount of power in such a small package, and I'm all for that.

    I have a base model MacBook Air 2022. I bought it in September so not long after the launch. Since I live in Poland it was very expensive. I replaced my base model MacBook Pro 13 inch with function keys and I couldn't be more happy. I mostly use it for light tasks as Microsoft Word for university and web browsing, watching videos etc. However, I also use it for Logic Pro and I edit in 4K in Final Cut (very simple, 3-4 minute videos, but still 2 streams of 4K and color correction) and some gaming such as The Sims 4 or Minecraft. It works perfectly fine in all these use cases, definitely miles ahead than my previous MacBook (it pretty much had issues with any task). I'm so so glad that it is coming down the original price (both in US and in UE too) and I hope that more people will be interested in buying this amazing piece of hardware. At the current price it's really hard to find competition with the same performance, battery life (an enormous improvement over my MacBook Pro by the way), screen quality etc. Very happy to see all of that, I can't recommend this laptop enough!

    If I was able to get the base air m2 for 1049$, I would have gotten that without a second thought and missed out on the pro which should have been my first choice from day one!

I have the Gold colour which I honestly prefer over any of the M2 colour ways (although they are pretty sleek looking). I think it just comes down to individual user preference- if you want a particular laptop and you are happy with your decision then great. Good video, but I have to disagree with your statements on the unified memory. There is functionally no difference in the way memory works between the Macbook and the XPS, both have an on-die GPU that accesses the same memory as the CPU. Apple calling their memory "Unified" is just branding.

    I think I heard someone's saying that the M2 MacBook Air was in fact meant to be the original M2 MacBook Pro, but that something must've gone wrong and they decided to keep this as the M2 MacBook Air. The argument supporting this theory was something along the lines of the M2 MacBook Air design language resembling the M1 Pro and Max MacBook Pros and that it doesn't really make sense the M2 Air getting as many new and improved features over the M2 Pro.
    I would be curious as to read someone else's thought about this idea which, when I heard it the first time, didn't really sound that insane and it actually made a lot of sense to me. 🤔

      To add to this, it's interesting that the M2 MacBook Air doesn't actually have the name etched on the notebook, anywhere. You can argue that Apple did this with the M1 iMac, but the M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro models were released after the M1 iMac and have their name etched on the bottom of the case, and they also use the same design language as the M2 MacBook Air.

    I'd probably still get an M1 Air over the M2. I haven't seen the M2 Air on sale for under A$1700, but it's easy to get an M1 Air for around A$1350. If I'm spending almost A$2000 on a laptop I'd want 16GB of RAM, but even the 512GB model still only has 8GB unless you BTO, and a BTO Mac also means you're not getting a discount.
    At this stage I'd either get the cheapest M1 Air or shell out for the Pro.

    Been watching your videos for a couple of years now. I remember 4 years ago, when you hated the MacBook Air. HAving had 2013, 1014 and 2015 models, I could partly agree, but most of your points were not important to me, so the video didn't really change my mind.
    I bought an M1 (8GB Ram, 512GB SSD) in February 2021 and it was .... ok. It just nerved, that I continually got ram full messages that I could click away and continue to work. Also, 512GB SSD was just too small realisitically for me. Even after radical housecleaning on the machine, just too little space.
    So I the M1 for a good price and bought an M2 with 16gb Ram and 1TB SSD. Fast, sleek, quiet and ... now experience something I've never experienced with any other Mac, including my 2015 2.2GHz MacBook Air running the same version of Montgomery: over 48-72 hours the machine loses speed and power. Safari takes longer and longer to load pages, sometimes not loading at all. If I simply try a "restart", it can take up to (my record) 12 minutes for the machine to fully turn off before restarting. If I simply do a "shut down", it takes from 2-5 minutes to shut down. After restarting, all is fine with speed, with Safari. As I said, I dont have these problems running the same OS on my Intel MacBook Air. It's fast enough for every day tasks, doesn't need periodic restarts.
    It's unnerving to a point. I'm seriously considering wiping the M2 and reinstalling everything from a new.
    Maybe even simply get another 2.2Ghz 2015 MacBook Air, but I do love the M2's screen.
    Well, these things are subjective. My experiences do not reflect any I've seen elsewhere, so I'm not going to make general judgements about M1s or M2s. But I am relectant to put out even more money for a 14" M1 or a future 15" M2 MacBook Air. Now if there was only a way to get the reliablility of my 2015 MacBook Air with the screen of the M2. BTW - the 2015 MacBook Air (also teh 2017 MacBook Air is better in terms of being able to cheaply upgrade the SSD and replace the battery. Something we can't do with the M1 or M2.

    I don't understand this video... the M1 Air has dropped in price significantly as well and maintains most of the performance for loads less and all you're really missing out on is a new design. I'd rather get an M1 Air with a bunch of upgrades than an M1 base model.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England Год назад

      Since the M2 Air arrived, I think it has been much better optimised and is now performing far better than the M1 in most metrics. So, if you are like me and will keep it for 6+ years, I will easily choose the newest Air for its upgraded components and great design that adds value.

    • @cidsx
      @cidsx Год назад

      @@andyH_England I don't see how the M2 Air is better optimized, and it definitely doesn't outperform the M1 Air by a lot (otherwise he would have mentioned both of these things). What I do know is that my M1 MacBook Air base model that I got for $800 back in 2021 is not lacking in CPU or GPU performance at all; right now, it's sitting at around 20% and never really spikes unless I'm using blender. I do, however, wish I had more RAM because that's the bottleneck. Thankfully, since the SSD doubles as RAM and the internal SSD is fast, I don't regret getting 8 GB as much. However, the M2's SSD speed is half the speed of the M1's SSD, and even then, you can upgrade the RAM in the M1 for around the same as a base M2 Air.
      So essentially, I'd argue you get more performance because you can spend more on RAM on the M1, the SSD is faster, and the CPU is not a bottleneck. Since the M1 and M2 aren't that different, I'd assume they'd get nearly the same number of software updates. And while the design is really good, the M1's is also quite nice too and the novelty of the M2's design will wear off eventually.

I was able to use the same case and other accessories that I used on my Intel MBA, which I sold for $450 in only a week. Yes, the MagSafe is nice but I’ve been using a magnetic USB adapter which cost about $25, and I’m not really using all the power that the M1 has right now. The biggest improvement with the M1 was always the cooling for me - I’m so used to the silence with my iPad that the constant fan on the Intel was really bugging me. In short, there’s just no reason for me and probably a lot other to make the jump to a M2 any time soon.

This is the best laptop I have ever owned. I can often use it for two or three days before charging it (that blew my mind!). It is just at powerful as the 16 inch which is more than enough power for what I do. Add to that how silent, portable, and easy to use this is and it is really great. Lastly I have issues with PWM induced headaches. The M1 Air seemed to still affect me, but the M2 Air has not been an issue at all. So it is expensive, but I think it is well worth the price.

My suggestion is to buy it from somewhere that allows you to test it and return it. I say this as codecs make a big difference in editing and export power. The Apple Store let me open an iMovie project on the M2 Air and M1 Pro 14 and 16 and Studio. There was little difference between them. Again this can depend on many factors so best to test for yourself. I couldn’t test other editing software as I think they only have iMovie preloaded on the Macs. SSD speed doesn’t affect anything as I am using T7 drives when moving files. I don’t monitor swap memory, but I haven’t seen any problems with using 8GB of RAM.
