We moved to Avon 3 years ago and went to a Christmas concert to hear them for the first time. I was 'blown away'. I had never heard a public high school orchestra that sound like this. [Full discloser: I do not have any relatives in this high school.] I do have to say that I have an masters degree in music so I know something about the topic. Judging from the consistent high marks they get at state competition it is clear that many people agree with me. I know that the band program is just as good. What I can't understand is some of the negative comments. These kids and leaders work very hard and deserve a little civility. I, too, would love to hear an intercity high school orchestra that sounds this good, or better. But that shouldn't diminish what great heights this program as achieved. Come on, folks. Privilege or no privilege, private lessons or no private lessons, school-owned instruments or privately-own instruments, this is a great program and should generate respect, showing your 'better nature'. These are kids, not adults. Most of them will make a living at something other than music. Give them some praise for what they have accomplished!
I am 77 years old and i've viewed numerous high school orchestras over the years, as well as all-city and all-state high school orchestras, and having strong classical training, I must say that even though the acoustics left something to be desired (not the band's fault), this is one of the best high school performances I have observed...kudos!
I'm a violinist at Avon, and I just saw this. Thank you so much, both for the luck, and for the kind comment! :) We weren't able to watch you perform, but I'm sure you guys sounded great today, and I hope you all had fun!
Not taking away from the hard work and passion they showed. I smell $$$, great and new instruments, an army of staff, instructors and private lesson teachers. I would be impressed if this was in an inner city school.
No, I wouldn’t classify Avon as an inner city school, but like Mr. Westman was the only orchestra director at the time, and not as many ppl here had private lessons as you may think. We do get help from the band directors, but like Zach said we do have some issues lol
I hate to dogpile you cause two of our members have already responded, but only very recently have we gotten a second director. It was all a one-man show until several months ago. A lot of the instruments are school owned as well for both band and orchestra, very few people have a non-rented instrument. Plus our orchestra room is very not good, it used to be the school's dance room before expansions were made to the performing arts wing of the school. We may have some money, but compared to some other competing schools we don't have too much staff Also who's to say inner city schools can't be successful? North Central High School down in Indy is inner city and has had great success in both orchestra and choir over the years
Andrew is a legend don't @me. In all seriousness, he was really connected to the music and very passionate about our program that year especially as a senior playing for the last time with that orchestra. Granted he does move a lot, but it also acts as a great pseudo metronome especially in the Bloch concerto where we played without a conductor. His skill of keeping a metronomic rhythm in his body language carried a lot throughout pretty much every piece we played that year.
First chairs and sometimes 2nd usually move in this way. It's one of the marks of a good violinist. In all fairness, you really don' t have to be a high chair and sway/dance with the music to be good.
pumpkin462 yea ik this is a year later but band doesn't have to tune their fingers in yhe right position AND bow at the same time so in my opinion orchestra takes more time then band and also I mostly hear the orchestra it just depends on which one you focus on..
There are things I like to think about while trying to fall asleep. One thing that usually calms me is the endlessness of the universe around us. The universe is so vast and grand, that we ourselves just don't really matter. I see no point in doing anything due to how minuscule we as a whole are compared to many other things. I fear death, but still embrace it's warm embrace.
bro you know how paranoid string players are that they might not get the note right just bc their finger is 1/2 centimeter off from the the actual spot💀💀

If they hating ik I did something right
Absolutely fantastic. Avon High School should be proud of its orchestra
From a 1990 graduate, we played March Slav in 1986 at our first tune in Marching Band. It was a fun tune playing a Baritone Sax.

Good luck today Avon! I’m a cellist at Goshen High School and will be performing at state a few performances before you guys, best of luck!
I remember watching this last year and I just had to watch this again. unbelievable performance.

incredible performance for this age group!! I hope they were all able to continue music in some way.
Terrific performance! ❤
Nice
I feel like this would be perfect around Christmas
It was wonderfu

russ G We actually struggle to get private teachers on certain instruments and at least for the brass most instruments are school owned.

Asshole much? Like you would know.
Melia Caroline isn’t the new guy mr powell? bc i got him in 7th and now 8th. He always brags abt being at the highschool🙄
👏👏👏👏👏
What Coincidence That From Behind, The Music Instructor Looks Like Putin
ah yes that one asian kid as first violin that overexaggerates everything lmfao
I came across this while searching for this song as I’m playing this myself. The first guy just looks like an idiot 😂
1rst chair violin is way too over dramatic
His head bobs like a fish out of water
Until you can play better than him, don't criticize him. Avon prioritizes passion and moving with the music, and he was doing just that and then some.

he looks stupid af 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Not sure how somebody whose clearly that good can look that stupid while playing 😂😂😂😂
Sorry the band is much better than the orchestra. I can hardly hear the orchestra at all
pumpkin462 louder is not better

@@kaliasilva8856 work less on orchestra and more on grammar
