I’ve had several people request this topic. By the way guys use our request form in the description box to let us know what topics you’d like to see us cover so without further adeau, let’s talk about whatever happened to The Smashing Pumpkins Bassist D’Arcy Wretzky.
Growing up in Michigan, D’Arcy Wretzky would be the middle child of three sisters gravitating towards punk and post-punk music.
.Wretzky would tell Addiced to Noise about her upbringing “My mother always played music when I was growing up. We always listened to the radio. My mom played instruments and myself and my sisters were always encouraged to play instruments. I played classical violin for about 9 or 10 years. And oboe ] and I was in choir and everything. It was just always a part of my life. I've done so many different things. I have done a lot.”
In high school she played in a handful of cover bands before moving across the pond to France to join a band that had already disbanded by the time she was set to join. She would head to Chicago with little more than her bass guitar and move in with her sister, join a band and a few months later meet the Billy Corgan who changed her life.
Corgan would come across Wretzky when the frontman was 20 and it was initially an argument over the pair attending the same rock concert that saw Corgan criticizing the band that performed that night. Corgan’s first words to the bassist being and i quote "You're full of expletive"). According to rolling stone . Despite getting off on the wrong foot Corgan and Wretzky shared similar tastes in music with her telling the Flint Journal "I listened to his tapes from the band he was into prior (to the Pumpkins) and I really liked the music they were doing. I wanted to be doing it, too. I loved it."
Despite musically being on the same page, there personalities clashed right off the start with Corgan telling Spin magazine
Well, when I was 20 and met D'Arcy, my whole thing was A, music, music, music, 24-7. And I couldn't understand why D'Arcy wasn't music, music, music, 24-7. D'Arcy was like, "I have to have a life. It can't be that way." And at the time I couldn't respect that.”
The band would round out their lineup with guitarist James I’Ha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. The band would release their first album Gish in 1991. It was during the making of the album and tour that I’Ha and Wretzky became romantically involved and subsequently broke up.. I’ha would tell rolling stone “It was really bad,”. “All the normal stuff that would happen between a boyfriend and girlfriend who had broken up after a long time was happening, only we were stuck together. Under normal circumstances we probably would have said…, I’ll never see you again,’ but since we were forced to be together, we eventually got over it. I still feel pretty close to her.” Wretzky would marry Catherine drummer Kerry Brown in 1993. w. They formed Scratchie Records, which has released singles by the Chainsaw Kittens and others. The band’s sophomore record 1993’s Siamese Dream made the band superstars, but with the new found fame came its own set of problems.
Corgan’s controlling style would lead to tensions within the group as he would play most of the guitar and bass parts on the band’s first two albums albums as Wretzky would contend that corgan did this since he could nail the tracks in fewer takes. Adding to the tension was Corgan’s openness to discussing the band’s problems out in the open with him telling SPin in 1993 about playing the guitar and bass parts “I gave them a year and a half to prepare for this record ... yet they continue to keep failing me."Add Jimmy Chamberlin’s substance abuse issues and the band was a powder keg, ready to explode.
During a 1994 piece on the band, Rolling Stone would interview the whole band including Wretzky and the bassist who always seemed press shy was no different hiding her attitude towards Corgan telling the publication My mom always told me,” “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” The publication would go o Видеоклипы
Man i was so in love with d’arcy in the Siamese dream era
Same. Had such a crush on her. Always wondered what happened to her
She was always so hot.
Oh ME TOO 😎 Such a classic beauty and I am always attracted to female musicians.... I'm a drummer and as you know that can cause problems 8n a band 😁
@@ralphtarr5931 haha in my early 20’s my band found this dime piece with a pretty decent voice to sing back ups on a few tunes and the plan was we’d pass her around the band (hey we were all like 21) and then, one day shortly after we all agreed, she just happens to end up the lead singers girlfriend lol. Shoulda saw that coming. Oh well they ended up married with kids happily ever after. I still kinda feel like he betrayed us lol
Me too
That original lineup couldn’t be beat. Saw them on the Mellon Collie tour and it’s still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Didn’t hurt that Garbage opened for them, at their peak.
Yeah, the original group just filled the room with a certain kind of energy. Saw them in Chicago with Gish and then in Michigan with Siamese Dream, can't say which was better. They were just unbelievable.
@@highnote8094 Energy is right! They all complemented each other so well, off stage dynamics notwithstanding. Very unfortunate they couldn’t all stay together for the long haul.
I’ll never forget the free concert in downtown Minneapolis that they played in ‘98. Had to be like 100k people
That Butch Vig connection 😂😮😮😮

I wash D'Arcy's car as I own a mobile car wash and detail business "We Dry Harder." She's always been the sweetest to me. One time she played the bassline to Bullet With Butterfly Wings just by herself, acoustic, in the driveway. I was amazed.
D’Arcy still drops into my donut shop, “Donut You Want One?”, every now and then. She is always so kind to my staff.
My first concert was Hennipen Ave Block Party in 1998 downtown MPLS, 70,000 people packed in a empty parking lot with Smashing Pumpkins playing, remembering that night still gives me chills.
Yeah darcy comes into my tractor supply shop called "Sneeds, feed and seed - formerly chucks". Very kind and thoughtful, although did seem to pick up a lot of fertilizer for some reason - weird!!
She comes by the brewery I illegally operate out of my garage. She's a big fan of my Cumin Cider.
@@stevebanning902every now and then she'll pop into my buddy's plus sized men's store, "Big Guy? For You!" and is always a sweetheart
As a 16 yr old Dutch exchange student in Ohio USA in 1996 my host family took me to my first ever concert. We travelled all the way to Fort Wayne, Indiana to see two bands whom I never heard of before: Garbage and the Smashing Pumpkins!! That night became a core memory. We were front stage and I was feet away from D'Arcy and was hypnotized by her presence and aura. Ever since Ive been a massive fan of the band and a concert junky in general. Thanks Faulk family from Ohio for introducing me to punk rock and live concert!!🤘
Awesome story!
That's awesome. I'm glad you got to have that experience!
I worked with Darcy in a small coffee shop, off Clark in Chicago, in the late 80's. She always seemed like a genuine, sweet kid.
Fame is a helluva drug. I wish her well. Nothing but fond memories of the Lass!
Wow, that must have been an amazing experience
@@luiz7607 It was a bit of magic time for all of us. Cheers, mate !
Thak you for saying something nice about Darcy. Too many people are quick to be dismisive and mean.
@@susiex6669 The last few years have taught me that most people are idiots. Hold on to the good ones. They are more precious than diamonds !
@@luiz7607 Why? At the time he was probably just working with some young woman, she wasn’t a rock star or anyone significant. It’s only in retrospect that it’s interesting.
I was lucky enough to see The Pumpkins in their glory days during the 'Big Day Out' concert down here in New Zealand in 1994.
*I was front row and I can tell you that D'Arcy was so beautiful that it was almost supernatural.* Guys and girls alike, all eyes were fixed on her. And she knew it! She was doing the strangest and most intense facial grimaces and silent screams and strange smiles throughout the performance, and all timed perfectly to her amazing bass playing. It was like a kind of performance art that I have never seen before or since. During the end of 'Silverfuck' the rest of the band fell silent and it was just D'Arcy who played her droning bass line on and on almost like a solo for what felt like 5 minutes straight until the crowd was swaying, almost in a trance before Billy screamed and the entire band kicked back in for the climax of the song. It was the greatest live performance I have ever seen in my life and truly memorable and D'Arcy was a big part of it.
I saw them in 1996 and I just remember how average looking she was compared to my date.
she was my first girl crush :D
Sounds amazing!!!!
Yeah i was there too, though i was curled in a ball at the back under the stands on acid. Sounded pretty good, i preferred The Breeders though.
D'Arcy and amazing bass playing definitely don't belong in the same sentence
I was actually fb friends with her and spoke to her quite often around 2016-18. Yes it was actually her. She would send recent photos of her and her horses. One time I posted that my father was having surgery and she posted on my page that she was praying for him and I commented thank you and people recognized her and she had to block me because most of my friends were trying to contact her. Haven’t heard from her since. But it was cool while it lasted.
My buddy's sister was "best" friends with her in high school. The things I heard from her painted Darcy as a pretty nice, genuine person. This sounds like something she would do. Too bad she was overwhelmed by the others. Cheers, thanks for sharing!
@@mrfuriouser Yes I don’t think she just blocked me I think she just deleted that account altogether… hopefully it wasn’t solely because of that incident. But it was so cool talking the her off and on for those couple of years. It was obvious she didn’t want to talk about Billy Corgan, and I never ever asked.
I wanna see the photos she sent!
@@1w598 how am I supposed to upload photo to a RUclips comment?
Yeah sure right
SP made me realize there was awesome music outside or rap. Without them, I would not have the appreciation for music that I do. They started the journey
Interesting comment and one that I can really relate to, except Nirvana was the band that did that for me.
Same, except for me it was pop/MTV. I went from listening to Paula Abdul and Aerosmith to becoming obsessed with SP and Pearl Jam (later Pavement and Sonic Youth). I credit SP with giving me eclectic taste.
I saw them with Wretzky twice and regardless of what if anything she put on the Gish or Siamese Dream albums, she played well live and she is a great stage presence. A good counter energy to Corgan. They are far better live with her in the band.
Her vocals were pretty underrated too. Being Corgan's foil in terms of sound in both instruments and singing brought a lot to the table in how solid they were both in the albums and live.
@@AxleTrade-agreed! She brings a certain energy to the table and overall chemistry of the band. You can’t mess with that chemistry. That’s what makes the band magic in the first place
@@AxleTrade - I was just going to type that.. her voice is delightful and hauntingly beautiful on backing vocals.
Omg absolutely! That is not even a band worth seeing without D'Arcy on bass.
@@AxleTradeShe had a great voice. I wish she had been the singer and the bass player personally. I loved the Pumpkins through about 1997. Then my interests were elsewhere. I was also a devout Alice in Chains fan. They were my favorite band by far in the early 90s, and mid, and late. But I like the pumpkins as well. I just could not stand Billy's voice. And the fact he is the biggest a**hole to ever be in a rock band lol.
D’Arcy was my first musical crush. I was enamored with her and even tried playing bass because of her before becoming a guitarist.
I always wondered what happened and this is super sad to learn of her struggles
I saw Pumpkins live in '94 when they played in Saginaw, MI. There was a special shout out to D'arcy who was all smiles because her hometown was only 3 hours away. The band rocked, and D'arcy was just mesmerizing in the way she played and sort of swayed back in forth that put us in a trance to watch her. First time I got to crowd surf all the way to the front of the stage, so I'll always remember this one!
Wow. D’arcy performing so close to her hometown, you crowd surfing to the front for the very first time. The joy of it all! What a beautiful memory. It made me feel nostalgic for something I didn’t even experience myself. 💖
Them were the days!
I really miss D'arcy and the energy she brought to the band. She had the sound, the vibe and the look. I hope they can all get back together and be friends some day.
Actually, I can't find the article that references it, but he shared how he was trying to work on a track and she told him to sing softly. He actually said in the interview "you mean like 'Stay cool'?" mocking Corgan's vocals from Cherub Rock. She told him to lay down on some pillows with the mic right overhead and sing.
She did a vocal take on the song "Cancer" from Title of Record, and he was like "wow, I don't think I can do better than you did there, can we just use your vocals". This totally showed me that she was a creative influence, she worked with people. She wasn't just a pretty bassist.
@@redconfetti that is trivial. corgan wrote all her bass lines. end of story.
I'm not sure she had the sound as Billy played bass on most of those old classics.
Dude they're all so old now. Even if they did all kiss and make up, it would never be the same.
Oh and Darcy has lost "the look" for good.
@@alukuhito The fact that people keep saying that and there's tons of videos of them playing live where her bass tone is awesome.
I started listening to smashing pumpkins when I was 12 years old, I grew up with them. When the pumpkins broke up, it was like parents divorcing it was devastating. I wish Darcy nothing but the best, she’s a beautiful soul.
Ava adore made the break up a little easier to swallow
Agreed Ninnjette. I loved Darcy in the 90s. Wishing her well.
Parents divorcing is a good thing and healthier for all involved , especially for children .
Mericans are backwards, ignorant and weird ...smh
I was about the same age when i started listening. Nirvana was the buzz all over, even though i lved in Tijuana, Mexico. It was fun listening to them but the smashing pumpkins they really hit me in the feels, from the grunge days to Ava adore. It's really sad they couldn't stay toguether and to be able to evolve as a band.
She is a TERRIBLE bass player.
I liked when the Smashing Pumpkins had that heavy psychedelic aesthetic on Gish and Siamese Dream as opposed to the more post-punk/goth thing they had going on later in their career.
Agreed, although I thought they got some of that old vibe back with Oceania
post-punk is a completely incorrect descriptor for what you-re trying to say SP catalogue is 0% post-punk
@@qwerwerterytrtyutyuiyuiouiop kinda BS, their demos and gigs before gish were pretty post-punk.
@@annone3428 that wasn't the context of the original post, poindexter
I agree. Mellon Collie is VERY over-rated (only about ONE discs worth of good songs - and I am alone when I say , I HATE that song "1979") . I was alive in 1979-- that song makes me feel nothing .
I met her when Smashing Pumpkins were the musical act on SNL (Cameron Diaz was the host) back in the 1900s. All I can remember is how super super nice she was to me. A total class act.
All the way back in the 1900s!? Hahaha!
Finally I can say *in a proper meaning* Smashing Pumpkins were waaaaaaay ahead of their parents' time.
Cameron Diaz held up an Edison Cylinder of their latest release and told everybody to go and buy it.
I’m just surprised you still remember that after at very least 123-113 years later
I still think the tone of her bass is by far one of the best I've ever heard. It's so prominent and so warm sounding, it has a strength that never sounds harsh or blown out.
Sounds like that tone was a product of Corgan and Butch Vigg.
Op, listen to the video. Corgan played most of the songs that were on the album, because he wanted to do it on fewer takes. Wretzky was just eye candy for the band.
@@someperson8151 Watch the live performances from the 90's, dingbat. She's on stage playing well and with a great tone. That's what the original commenter is talking about. Smh.

@@someperson8151-that’s not true at all. She’s obviously not the player or writer that Billy is but she held her own when she was sober. That girl could rock out and was definitely a plus factor in that band
I hope D Arcy gets the help she needs. This is pretty sad on all ends from the pumpkins to her. I'm sure both have valid points on each other. I just hope one day we can see the OG line up of the pumpkins
She’s healthy. She’s been healthy for a few years now.

The mixture of tenses you narrate your videos in make my head spin, but thank you for this. D’arcy’s playing was a huge influence on me as a teen.
Do you still play bass?
Anybody in the comments.. do you remember when you got The Melancholy and infinite sadness double cassette tape. My mom had got it for me the following Christmas and I fell in love with the atmosphere and the imagination in each and every song
Naw, I borrowed the double CD from a girlfriend at the time..
It defined an era of my early 20’s and yes - first time I ever heard the album was the week of its release at my mates place. I was mermerised! It was so dense, psychedelic, heavy, light and epic all at once!
I remember my best friend and I we were obsessed with the pumpkins got that album cranked up volume and started play. I think I got a boner when I heard 1979 for the first time chills went through my soul hearing that strange echo like new guitar sound and such a catchy hook. Plus being 18 at the best time in the USA it was a surreal moment
Huge Pumpkins fan, saw them a few times last few years, and of course got the new album.. I must say, they just ain't the same without her.. Her gritty Bass is definitely missed by me..
I feel like The Smashing Pumpkins were Gen X's Fleetwood Mac, in a way. A group of great musicians who made great music, but were just a time bomb waiting to go off in personal matters. Drug issues, personality issues, creative issues... I think we were lucky to get three truly great albums out of them before they began to disintegrate.
Good comparison. Even more credit to Stevie Nicks, then. She demanded she stay in the band and that her ex sing the songs she wrote about their breakup.
Just saw them last night. They still put on a good show, but I wasn’t really feeling the newer material. Luckily the set was mostly the ‘90s stuff.
Jane’s Addiction absolutely killed it though.
That's a beautiful analogy.
This is so true I bet even they would agree with you.
Gross. Fleetwood Mac? Get out of town.
I used to play Pumpkins songs *loud* in my soft top convertible (I turned it down at stop lights) and it's still one of the most iconic bands of the '90s. Unfortunately, as is so often the case, epic hardcore music comes out of various degrees of mental illness, deep depression, drug abuse, paranoia, panic attacks, and maybe suicidal tendencies. Be well and take care, seek help if you need it.
I've played Pumpkins songs *loud* in my car, but it wasn't a convertible, soft top or otherwise, and I also turn it up at stop lights. Is this ok?
@@michaelhaydenbell it's fine, I still play them loud at traffic lights, in my tiny 10 year old red Hyundai i10...on a CD player...
Sianese Dream is unmatchable pure guitar genius and still underrated by guitarists.
D’Arcy is a Queen ❤
Big fan here. Followed this story really closely at the time because I was really hoping for an original line up tour. Corgan stated he did reach out to her and she never showed up to practice and hadn’t picked up a bass in years. She wouldn’t have the stamina to keep up with a whole tour and didn’t know all the songs. She wanted in 100% they invited her to participate here and there but had a bassist they’d been practicing with. Corgan said he was over the drama and wished her well with her horses.
Stern interview?
Everything I’ve heard about her relationship with Billy Corgan has always come off sounding toxic and this video solidifies it. I hope she’s living her best life right now and that things are going well!
Wow, great video. Gish was such an important album to me when I was a teenager, I had just moved my freshman year of high school and it was pretty stressful. I didn't know any of this backstory tho.
There is no doubt Corgan can be a total arsehole. Sad to see Darcy spiraling like that. I hope she is doing much better, she really was a great bass player. I still adore the Gish album.
i think billy has really cleaned up his act in recent years. i haven’t heard about a bad encounter with him in a long time.
@@loganrohr8573 Corgan always had a HUGE ego. Anyway yes, it seems he's kind of mellowed out a little, these past few years.
She is. My dad and I met her a few years ago. She's got a real nice place and is just doing her paintings and tending to her horses. You can tell she's found peace
@@totallynotfbi5837 Glad to hear that! It sounded like from what her bf said on social media a while back that she was doing well.
Just like he did with the smashing pumpkins Billy Corgan found something else he can destroy wrestling because he owns the wrestling promotion N.W.A which he sucks at.
I just saw Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday night Oct. 22nd, they were supposed to be touring with Jane's Addiction, but J.A. abruptly cancelled, and didn't even tell anyone. No one realized until we were already at the show because they didn't announce it. So the Smashing Pumpkins had to perform an extra 40-50 minutes to make up the time for them. And you know what? I didn't even miss Jane's Addiction because the Pumpkins were amazing. They still sound so good, look up some concert footage of their tour so far, they just started the beginning of October and there's video on youtube of some concerts. Also, tickets have been on sale since like March, and Dave Navarro only announced days before the tour was to start that he wouldn't be joining. Screw Jane's Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins still rule, however.
I saw them in Nashville and JA was terrible. Perry is the only one left. 1/2 the show involved barely dressed strippers grinding to the songs and PA hopping in on the action. And he’s old now, so you can imagine the vibe it gave off. Smashing Pumkins was stellar though.
Hell in my opinion the crowd lucked out! I have NEVER understood why anyone likes Jane's Addiction.

My first show was the Mellon Collie tour. The first show I ever asked to go to and asked my parents for tickets. It was fantastic. Before the show I didn't realize what a stellar guitar player Corgan was (lead wise). Fountains of Wayne opened. They sucked and were heckled accordingly.

Introduced to the Pumpkins by my buddy during Army AIT in 1992. We went to see them in El Paso together in 1994 when they were touring during release Siamese Dream. Totally mesmerized by D’arcy during that concert. My buddy suffered tremendous desert storm PTSD and substance abuse issues which led to his eventual suicide a couple years ago. Miss him always and wish we could spin Gish together one last time. Will be thinking of him when I see them live in Dallas this August.
I've been in unsuccessful bands with people who didn't get along and even if it was Uber successful it's like staying in a marriage for the kids, it's just not going to be good. For ANYONE PEACE AND LOVE D'ARCY 😘
Thanks so much for uploading this video Rn'R True Stories! I always wonder about her when I listen to SP which is fairly often. I mean, I kinda knew what happened but I didn't really know. You know? Now I'm informed. 👍❤🎃❤
Thank you!!! We need more D'arcy in our lives again. :)
I saw the pumpkins on lollapalooza in 94 and loved hearing Gish and Siamese Dream! Both records are pure HEAVEN! Billy, James, Darcy, and Jimmy doesn’t get better than that! I’m not gonna lie: I REALLY MISS DARCY BEING IN THIS BAND 💔
Correct, it never got any better than that.
That was heaven
They suck after 1st album
yup. THAT was a fantastic lolla that year. They were truly AWESOME.
At Lollapalooza in ‘94 Corgan got mad at the audience because Green Day and beastie boys absolutely crushed their sets. The audience lacked energy during pumpkins and he was upset about it. They practically booed him off stage. I never felt the same way about Pumpkins again despite how amazing Siamese dream and Gish were.
Beastie Boys and Green Day though 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I once saw an interview with Doyle Von Frankenstein from the Misfits and he summed it up the best. He said "I'll never understand why people cant get along. It must be awfull just playing music and making million of dollars" . Said sarcastically of course and this is what I think of every time I think about smashing pumpkins. It's crazy how ego just DESTROYS absolutely brilliant bands.
@@xombiekat13 Undoubtedly so!! Just imagine if Danzig would have been more "cooperative" lol. But luckily, all of them found sucsess. But yeah I'm sure it was directed at him lol.
Ego and heroin
For what it's worth, as a musician that's been through this a few times, it's not always about ego, though that's often the case. You're working on a song and your co-writer(s) takes it in a direction that, in your mind, ruins it. And vice versa. Or, it's their/your song and you/they feel it sucks so bad, you're embarrassed to be seen playing it. It can be extremely difficult to keep everyone on the same page.
@@klocke5247Ah I see what your saying. Yeah I can imagine that crap takes place a lot too.
I'm gonna see the Misfits this weekend in Dallas.
It's amazing that no one in the band got along yet they managed to make awesome music.
Because it was all written by one guy, Billy Corgan. He wrote all the parts of the songs (excluding drums). In many cases he recorded all those parts in the studio as well (excluding the drums). James Iha has a total of 5 cowritten songs throughout their glory days in the 90s. I think it is amazing they stayed together as long as they did considering that Billy was doing all the star power work.
@@schirmc1 The chemistry was still necessary. Corgan never made anything close to the Pumpkins' first three albums after that core group broke up, let alone other projects like Zwan, etc

Miss her so much.. maybe it was the tension in the band that produced at least 3 unparalleled masterpieces
Would love to have seen what she could have contributed to music without S.P. as a solo artist. I hope you are doing well D'arcy 💗
This is truly One of the sadder stories in rock that didn't involve multiple deaths (not that the One wasn't horrible). To I think almost any fan Smashing Pumpkins is the original Four people and anything else is just another group using their name, even if it has Three of the Four in it.
Saw the pumpkins at a small club in Nashville while on the Gish tour in ‘92ish. It was my intro to “alternative” music. They absolutely crushed it and I haven’t been the same since!
Billy's ego shattered the group and Iha came crawling back despite it all; D'arcy saw through it and avoided being sucked back into that void. I grew up listening to these guys, but learning later how full of himself Billy was kind of soured me to their music.
Saw the Pumpkins last week, with Janes Addiction. Great show. Her failure to put up with Corgan reminds me of a comment by the Misfits’ Doyle, made before they finally reunited with Danzig: “ rock ‘n’ roll is the only business where people can’t put up with each other enough to coexist, and make millions of dollars“.
There is an argument for some sports, like 2 drivers in a motorsports team. You have F1 stories like this, two drivers same team can't stand each other both earn millions and have to coexist due to a contract.
I've wondered this so many times! 😂 She was great, saw her in concert with the Pumpkins on many occasions.
Good stuff, man. Great research and presenting it.
I just started getting into the Smashing Pumpkins more and wondered what happened to her ❤️❤️❤️ Loved them as a teen
Pumpkin fans (me, being a big one) love to scapegoat Darcey and this whole fallout. The truth is, at least at the very end, she nailed Billy. She totally called out his bs. He did not like the embarrassment and that was that. Darcey was right at the end though. I say this as a very big fan of Billy's.
The Philly Setlist was Phantastic, and I even enjoyed the songs he played from the newer albums.
I thank God I got to see them in 1993 at the Paladium in Hollywood. Siamese dream album. My all time favorite. It was an amazing show I'll never forget
Such an excellent bassist and Central component of SP's (mostly early) sound!! Very glad that Billy, Butch Vig and Flood Let Her shine, esp in the intros and quieter parts of their songs...
Always wondered what became of D'arcy. Circa 1995-1996, her posture with her bass guitar when performing live always amused me.
Darcy (Miss Blue) was the subject of songs on + appeared on a Filter's Title Of Record LP.
I think she provided BVs for a number of the tracks although only credited (as Miss Wut) on the track 'Cancer'.
I was friendly with Darcy and other girls in High School on the girls varsity tennis team, I even rode my motorcycle to their out of town matches to cheer them on. Many people don't know that she was involved in a fairly serious car accident around that time and busted up her face pretty badly. She was probably one of the prettiest girls I'd ever seen and had a huge crush on her.
She was on the tennis team ?
@@chis5050 Yes and she was fairly good
@@Bob-hq5lj interesting. Thanks for the response
I was born and raised in the town that d'arcy is from. I used to see her sometimes. I did some work at her house a couple times. She seemed overwhelmed so I just respected her privacy. I was about 18 and really wanted to talk to her though.
I felt a degree of tragedy and sorrow when _The Smashing Pumpkins_ lost D'arcy Wretzky. Eleven years later I felt the same when _The White Stripes_ lost Meg White.
They do not really compare though in terms of musicianship. Meg White's drumming skills are really not that good.
Corgan did everything on Siamese Dreams, except the Drums.

@MARQUIS de QUEENSBURY 5.0 Totally different situation
I saw her alive and followed her ever since. She really influenced my mind and soul. Thanks doll. Philadelphia USA
So you’re a stalker?
When you listen to all the band members talk about each other from interviews it's amazing they stayed along together for as long as they did
That's crazy. I'm looking into this bands history. It's very interesting to me. I'm a musician too but play a different genre. I can say alot famous and upcoming bands always have problems within in. Maybe ego personal issues even money. It's sad that great bands have split up over stuff like this.
She has a house down the road from me in a very small town in Southwest Michigan. Seems to lead a very private life and has a horse ranch across the street.
Smashing Pumpkins were royalty in Chicago, and there were a thousand teenage girls who picked up a bass guitar guitar because of D'arcy.
I remember when she called into the 'radio station', which was Q101 in Chicago. She had been off the radar for quite awhile and nobody was quite sure what she was up to. I believe the call was completely unsolicited and the DJ seemed as surprised as anybody to be hearing from her. Made for some interesting radio that day.
I remember that. I was listening too.
The audio of that nterview is here on RUclips. Just saw it this morning
Nice. I remember listening to it live. @@refrigeratornoise3046
For me, the is no SP without D'arcy also included. And D'arcy's editing input cannot be overstated.
Thankfully it's not up to you, because they've recorded so much good music since she left the band.
D'Arcy and Nicole Fiorentino were some of the few to be willing to tell Billy no, and well, we've seen how that went for them. The music is better when he has someone to contradict him every so often.
@alukuhito yeah but not their original sound
If you were a boy born between 1982-1986… D’arcy was probably your first crush. I thought she was the prettiest chick I’d ever seen and then she was also incredibly cool and talented.
They all tranz people lol inverts. That's a dude mtf sorry
I was born in 69, you were too young then.
The year was 1995 I believe. I was just a young man at 12 years old. I remember seeing her in the video for the song Tonight, Tonight on mtv. I thought she was the most beautiful woman ever.
CooLLLL i was just here Thanks for sharing??????🥰🥰🥰
So happy I got to see the original lineup right after they did a stadium tour they did a small club tour and they came to Cincinnati, OH to a club called Bogarts. I went to get tickets as soon as they went on sale and got 2 before they sold out in 2 mins!!!! Fucking amazing show that night in such a small place!! One that I will never forget!!
I didn't know most of this. Jesus, can you imagine going through a break up, panic disorder, addiction issues, a miscarriage, and a ton of other personal problems while being stuck with a raging egomaniacal douchebag like Corgan? It's a wonder she's still sane.
Women deal with this stuff (myself included)
@@mariecait ego much
@@mariecait Tons of people, men and women, deal with this stuff. And 9 times out of 10 it is due to our own folly.
@@ratlungworm7035 yeah, but being that 1 out of 10 thru no fault of our own really sucks bad.
I actually like their late 80s demos a lot. Really cool vibe.
How nice to finally hear about what she was thinking.
I worked with Darcy back in the 90s...it was great...she was really nice and musical...yeah!!!
Kind of sad, we all would like to see them tour together one more time, but sometimes things don't work out, At least we have RUclips and we can go back and watch any concert we want.
D'Arcy: As mom always said, "If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all." Great advice for life, explains a lot here.
Passive-aggressively saying that she has a lot to complain about, ignoring the actual intent of that phrase.
I've been thinking about her a lot lately, odd that this vid came up. Thanks
"The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and D'Arcy have burned so very very brightly."
I bleached my hair in high school and darkened my eyebrows in an attempt to look like her.
And?
She did have a striking look to her!

Never saw the Pumpkins live however there was a cool bar on 63rd & Wood? Called Traxx. Directly under the raised railroad tracks. Anyway in 1991 at this bar they had that Gish album blasting out the jukebox & a dance club in the back. Good times on Chicago south side.
63rd/Wood isn’t the type of area where that music would be welcome.
Are you sure?
It’s the ghetto.
@@BLASTER0913 okay, maybe 63 & Just before Kenzie. Was a cool place only open on Friday and Saturday nights. By 1996 it was all boarded up unfortunately.
Then we would go to The EXIT 1623 north Wells.
@@Pineoilheavan
Haha. I know The Exit. For sure.
My buddy was in a punk band back then and always had gigs there.
I hadn't talked to anyone about the original lineup in years until earlier today., and D'arcey was the focus. As usual my phone was listening in so this just popped up in my feed.
Thanks to the Mighty Algorityms this video came up. I was listening to Gish the other night and mentally tuned out Billy's unintelligible lyrics and just enjoyed the seriously heavy instrumentals. Great band.
All for the best for D’arcy wherever you are. ❤ hope all is well ❤🎃
What happened to her was downright heartbreaking. After getting lost in drugs, she got plastic surgery done. She’s not the radiant beauty anymore. Now she’s a recluse but at least she’s clean.
She and this band is the reason i wanted to play bass guitar to this day. I worked every summer to save up for my first bass and lessons. I was 14 and now 44....still playing. I miss that girl.
We all miss D'arcy would love to see her in any way.
Really saddening and interesting to hear, but I hope things aren't too far gone and things can be mended
That Chris Isaak appearance in 2009 was pretty polarizing in terms of the things Billy and Jimmy said about their previous bandmates. Amazing musical performance that night though 👌
Yeah I particularly thought Jimmy was out of line for saying some of the things he was saying like dude you were a junkie that was partially involved in the death of the bands touring keyboardist and ultimately ended the bands popularity for the rest of the decade. Like you had no reason to talk about who played what on this and that song.
Godspeed, D'Arcy. Hope we see you join the Pumpkins again one day.
One of the best live bands I've ever seen, Glasgow Barrowlands early 1990's. And they were SO LOUD!
That was a great gig.
D’Arcy, if you ever want to jam, I’ll hang out with you anytime. Your music changed my life and it would be an honor to be your friend! Stay safe and know you are loved by so many.
Smashing Pumpkins were such an amazing group! They were beyond awesome!
They're still good. Not quite as good as way back when, but good nonetheless. I'm looking forward to the new album(s).
The last I had heard was that she struggling with addiction and was, for the most part, hiding out at home. I also have heard that she has good days and bad days. It's a shame, I always felt that she projected an air of cool that Billy didn't have.
Met dD'Arcy once at a tiny bar called dewys and used to party with Kerry brown there and at their house just down the road. Heard melloncollie prerelease in the studio they had in there barn
I get the feeling she preferred to stay off the radar and when doing so lost the desire to be someone others can rely on. I think that was the compliant. When they do come together they are great but is the situation really ideal for all members? The motivation to stay consistent over longer periods is never thought about while in the moment, I think. I think SP decided they wanted that, but not unanimously or in unison.
Did you guys read that the lead singer of Filter wrote a couple sings about her on the softer album they had, from when they were dating.
@@Taylor.Dude. not OP but one song features her on background vocals (“Cancer”), and he wrote “Miss Blue” about her, both on the second album. Which isn’t exactly “softer”…
Interesting.... I love FIlter.
@@Taylor.Dude. Title of Record album, Im Not the Only One and Miss Blue were directly mentioned by Patrick a couple years ago.
@@SneedyKetler Title of Record was when Filter developed a more radio friendly mix. I personally like the album a lot. But it's when they were said by many to have lost some of their edginess/heavyiness.
I was at Mellon Collie & Infinite Sadness in '96 in OKC! Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right) Was not a release but a teaser to come! building jaw dropped with excitement!
Fell in love with her in 1997 !! I was 15 u know!! 😘
Peace and Lots of Love from Mumbai India ❤️💯👌✨
Easily the most likable, relatable member of the band. Her playing ability is so underrated, she totally kills it at all those shows until Adore. Sweet D'arcy
The most attractive. James and Jimmy have always come off as the more likeable members of the band.
I really don’t know too much about the Pumpkins , but after watching a few interviews with Billy, I think he was overly controlling of them. D’arcy was a really good bassist and had an awesome singing voice. I hope she joins another band, and continues her music career!
Corgan is known as a control freak, but Iha at least had some occasional songwriting contributions and Chamberlain held his own as a great musician. She probably had a bit of imposter syndrome since she was only passable at bass and didn't contribute to writing (and for certain records didn't play her own bass parts). There was probably a great deal of emotional stress building up over the years.
Really solid live player and great tone
Smashing Pumpkins has a new music video out- Beguiled.. . And hypnotic guitar riffs sounds really killer!
