Most Beautiful Flight with Super Constellation through Swiss Alps from Samedan

- A flight close to the Swiss Alps - but not too close because we love this airplane! - with the legendary Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation of the 1950s is a spectacular experience. It is one of only two existing Super Connies worldwide that are still airworthy and the only one that is admitted for passengers flights (for members only). What a great piece of aviation history!
Flight Route: Samedan - St Moritz - Maloja - Septimerpass - Bivio - Lake Marmorera - Savognin - Tiefencastel - Filisur - Davos - Klosters - Flüela Pass - Zernez - S-chanf - Samedan Airport
The Super Connie is still considered the most beautiful aircraft ever built. The elegant dolphin-shaped fuselage and the triple tail design are a feast for the eyes. A very spectacular part is the engine start-up which is always accompanied by smoke and fire. The distinctive sound of the four powerful 18-cylinder radial engines (Wright R-3350) make the heart of any plane enthusiast beat faster. Enjoy!

I remember when fellow passengers complained about the loudness produced by their (4) 18 cylinder engines. And how the loud "hum" kept them from falling asleep on a long journey. And today, they pay money to hear that sound again at an airshow. There's nothing like the harmony those engines made & how great they sounded together.
one of the most graceful prop planes ever built !!
Super Connie: Where engineering meets art.
True! One of the most beautiful aircraft ever built!
Very true. Unfortunately, this also meant the plane was rather expensive to produce. Particularly costly was the dolphin-shaped fuselage, which was significantly costlier than a conventional cylindrical fuselage. Lockheed originally had plans to build this plane with turboprops in its later years. But because this plane was expensive to produce, they scrapped this plane and went with the Electra instead.
Only a few turboprop Constellations were built, and weren’t used long. But with 5500HP engines, they were quite good performers - they were EASILY capable of over 400mph flight.
The most beautiful passengers plane designed by Howard Hughes built by Lockheed. Second to lean supersonic Concorde. Air France had a fleet some flying Mexico city to Paris via NY. Congratulations Breatling thanks for the memory
Back once again, after 4 years ... worth every minute. It can't get better than this !!! Cheerio !!!
Thank you so much Karin! The flight with Super Connie through the Swiss Alps was most spectacular.
We all love this lady of the skies.
Thank you very much!
Seriously, I've watched a lot of the Constellation videos on RUclips and this has got to be one of the best. Amazing picture quality, great sound and having the Swiss Alps as a backdrop doesn't hurt either. Thank you to Breitling for helping to keep one of the best examples of the classic airline era flying and bravo to you on an exceptional presentation of one of the most amazing and beautiful machines ever produced, Howard Hughes would be proud!
Love the good old Super Constellation 👌 and this video of flying in the Swiss Alps!! 😃😍
The Super Connie was the first pressurised aircraft I had the pleasure of flying on!! It took me from Port Moresby PNG to Sydney Australia to begin my career as an apprentice AME with Qantas in February 1962. 😀😍😎
Nothing like having a quartet of 3550 engines singing to you at cruise power. Beautiful aircraft!
Beautiful sight. I was in a USAF Connie outfit in the late '60s and have been across the Pacific several times.
+Butch CHISM Thanks. Nice memories.
I was four years old when my brother and I flied from Madrid, Spain to Montreal, Canada on one of these with Iberia Airlines. Memories! It was on December 25th 1956.
You are a lucky person. "Those were the days" as they say. I didn't realize that some of these were still flying.
Pure music, pure elegance.. 😌
It really is! Thanks for watching!
Incredibly beautiful video. I am not ashamed to admit I almost was on the verge of tears; watching and listening to those magnificent radials; the sun glistening off the blades; remembering as a child sitting and looking out over the wings, thinking that they almost went on forever: the blinding white cumulus clouds: the Azure blue sky: the beautiful almost hypnotic scenery: what an incredible feeling it must have been to experience flying in such a pristine, restored Connie. What memories it brings back. I will watch this over and over. Thank you, thank you.
thank you for the flight down memory lane! I flew a lot on these in the 50s...the mellow sound of the radials, the broad wing dancing in the sun, scenery...wow.....I have some big RC models of the 749 Connie (12 feet) and love to walk into my hangar and JUST LOOK AT IT !!! beautiful, thanks for the magnificent tribute and quality.
Thank you for your kind words! Much appreciated. WOW have fun with your RC models! Cheers Matt
I love this video! :) and of course we all love the Super Constellation. It makes me happy to see one still flying since my childhood days when I first saw a picture of them. Now I get to see a video of one in the air at least.
What can i say, Such a rare Experience. Like the fact you have someone on the ground, Very nice
Thank you very much! It was a very unique experience. Have a nice day!
Took a TWA Constellation flight from Zurich to Montreal in 1960. Took 23 hours with stops in Glasgow and Gander NFL for refueling. I and my family sat in the rear of the plane. We were immigrating to Canada.
Thanks! WOW what a story! I really enjoyed this very exciting flight through the Swiss Alps.
In love with the Connie....❤️
It is a most wonderful aircraft. Love to remember this very adventurous flight through the Swiss Alps.
I am proud to have been a member of this airplane's crew when she was "Camarillo Connie" N73544.
Great to hear! Sure you have great memories of this wonderful aircraft.
Those giant radial piston engines have so much character. It's like a living creature.
Lifted_Above Yes, indeed. I have one of these 18 cylinder piston monster....Absolutely great..❤️❤️👍👍😎. The pinnacle of American piston engine development.....
...Simply Beautiful...
The most aesthetically pleasing of all aircraft. Almost 1950's art deco...as beautiful as a machine can be. IMO, of course
Mit der Super Conny durch die Alpen. Das dürfte schwer zu toppen sein! Danke für dieses traumhafte Video!
Sehr gerne geschehen!
Me and a bunch of flyers came down on a French airfield heading down to the Mediterranean Sea using C172, Pipers n such. This thing had sucked the place dry from AVGAS. But wow.. What a plane !
Oh my gosh! I keep coming back here every week to watch the most beautiful dolphin I've ever seen fly.
Thank you! :)
Oh my goodness.......finally got to watch a Connie!!! Enjoyed every moment.
Thank you Rina. The flight was most adventurous. Best wishes, Matt
Sounds better than any super Sport car:)
@@jatnierdorta except nothing.
Theres not a car engine in the world that can match the Mighty Pratt & Whitney R3350 Duplex-Cyclone radial engine. Not in torque, not in horsepower, not in sound, not in anything.
@@jatnierdorta Obviously car nuts care, because car nuts always boast how cool sports cars sound, but plane engines are more powerful and imo cooler sounding.
@@thecaynuck4694 If I said a moped engine is the best sounding engine in the world would I be wrong? These things are subjective, and you can never impose what you think as the only thruth there is.
@@lmb5529bml Sure it depends, but the way a plane engine spools up and the fact it's the most powerful type of aviation powering a tube bigger than the typical car or moped is special to many. And the sound waves have a uniqueness.
Plenty of legroom in there!
I could to a trip around the world and back with this spacious legroom :) Thank you very much for your kind words.
Man, that is a great looking machine!
I love it!
May she grace the skies forever!
What a stunning machine she still is. Looked right back then and still looks perfect today. Awesome sound from those turbo-compounds. Brilliant video too. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you very much Patrick! This flight was such an unforgettable experience.
Wow, that truly was a rare experience! They sure got you nice and close to the mountains at some points as well, stunning views. The Constellation is one gorgeous aircraft, thanks for sharing this stunning flight with us!

That was absolutely amazing, breathtaking, Matthias! Must have been an amazing experience. Well done! :)
Thank you very much for your kind words! I was very exited and had butterflies in stomach for the whole day. But thats part of such a unique adventure.
This plane used to fly at the West Virginia Air Guard Base in Martinsburg WV when I was 9 or 10 yrs. old. It was beautiful then and still is. Glad to see it still flying. Great Video Matthias Thank You!!!
+Tim Fremstad Thank you for sharing your memories. It is really nice to hear. Thank you for the compliments. Cheers Matt

Oldest cabin ive ever seen!!!!! Awesome!!!
Love how this video shows some views from inside the cabin and flight deck.
Thank you! Definitely one of my most spectacular flights ever.
Makes me want to do a big loop track of that engine sound 😎
This aircraft is just so beautiful and old the sound of it is literally meditating
Surprisingly smooth.
Kelly Johnson built the ultimate piston driven airliner. The DC-6 and 7 were just stretched DC-4s, but the '49s were new thinking from top to bottom, especially the L-1049. My wife worked in the building in Burbank, Bldg. 304, where most of the Connies and Super Connies were built. My dad flew them.
Thanks for your input. It is really great to hear. You hope you got the chance to fly on one. The ride in this Super Connie was most spectacular. Cheers Matt
I see vortexes coming off the props it must've been hot and humid during takeoff
VERY VERY COOL......I LOVE SEEING THINGS BEING PRESERVED LIKE THIS
Saw the Super Constellation for the first time at LHR as an eight year old; I thoroughly agree with you on its outstanding aesthetic qualities; I was so amazed when I was it. Thanks for the flight experience with wonderful outside views and happy radials doing their thing!
+Britt Unculus My pleasure! Thank you very much for sharing your great memories. Have a nice day.
My Mom was a stewardess at Eastern Air Lines and loved this plane. I built her a model of it
Thank you very much! ✈️ 🙏 What a lovely comment!!

What a beautiful plane. And those R-3350 turbo compound engines were the pinnacle of piston engine design.
Thank you very much my friend!
this video was published at my birthday
Ein wunderschöner Oldtimer ❤❤👍

Beim Start einfach nur ein geiler Sound!
Wow ~ what a treat!!!
Stunning images, excellent perspectives. And ~ the fact about the rarity of this beautiful plane, makes watching this film a very exciting adventure. Even more so it must have have been for you, by actually being on the plane yourself.
Thank you for bringing back such amazing footage!
This flight was one of my happiest moments in my life. But I could barely sleep out of sheer excitement. Thank you for commenting and enjoying the vid! 7:35 sitting under the C of the Constellation and waving happily :)

Watching the second time around I could actually see you wave ;o) What a wonderful experience for you, dear Matthias! I am truly happy for you, that you had that chance. Surely worth a sleepless night ... no?

beautiful views, thanks..
It was a very adventurous flight. Cheers Matt
That was a smooth ass landing too.
That's incredible!!!
AWESOME vid! I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this. Thank you!!!
Great...
I worked on the navigation systems of Connies that were used as reconnaissance aircraft by the US Air Force. I liked the R model the best because the external fuel tanks made the already long wingspan even longer.
Thank you for letting us know. It is always great to have some interesting input. Super Connie is so wonderful. The flight was an unforgettable adventure for me.
Wonderful!
This is outstanding. Beautiful scenery and airplane !!
Superb footage aboard a beautiful aeroplane. Thanks for sharing.
Comment, ne pas aimer se magnifique avion légendaire de toute beauté aéronautique! Aussi bien que par son élégance et sa puissance à ces quatre moteurs Wright! Merci pour le partage passionnant...😊🛩
what a great plane and excellent video, thank you.
+Larry Steiner Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing this most special and beautiful of all planes, with one of the world's most scenic backgrounds and having wrapped it all up such a beautifully done video. You are truly fortunate to have flown on such an important machine, I can only hope to be as blessed to fly on it as well someday. Thank you so very much for sharing this with everyone!

Beautiful airplane and beautiful video work and sound.
Absolutely awesome video Matthias, fantastic aircraft and scenery, the sound of those engines. I think passenger flights were more interesting and exciting in that era. Lucky man experiencing such a flight. Thanks for sharing the experience with us.
