- Back in the classroom finally! Feeling energized and crossing my fingers for a full year in the classroom - third time's the charm? Thank y'all for your patience on this one. I remember when you first started... I love how you keep your class the same... Saves a ton of money... I also watch Michelle (Pocket full of Primary)... It baffles me how the 2 of you don't have air conditioning... So unfair to you all... And cruel to the little humans.... I have been homeschooling 4 kids K-12... My oldest graduated last year!! Now I have a Pre-K (4) who is serious about learning to read!! I love watching your videos. Congrats on your marriage, Teddy, and your Kidney Table!!!! I hope you have a wonderful school year!!!! Perks of having an old building - but with the school community I’m in I forget quickly once the year gets going. Love it here way too much to worry about A/C! Not to say I won’t be thrilled if we ever do get it. Congratulations to your oldest! 💖

I love watching this! I followed you since year 1 when I was also a first year teacher. My first year was just like yours! I was so excited and spent SO much time setting up. By year 3, I know the deal and am trying to enjoy way more of my summer! I'm glad you are back :)

I literally just went back to your 1st year vlogs that I remember watching as they were posted to find the magnets that you mentioned and then the following day got your update notification. So glad to see you again!
So happy you're back! We started teaching at the same time, this is going to be my third year in first grade too 😊 for your posters, I think either put them up as you go or if you want to make sure they'll all fit, put them up all at once but have the ones you haven't taught yet covered up. I've seen some teachers do this with sound walls, where they'll have a picture of a lock or a "coming soon" poster over it that they take off when it's been taught.

Hi Lauren, so glad you’re vlogging again! In the past I’ve hung the Fundations posters (available on Wilson Languages website) as we’ve learned the sounds/spelling patterns. This year I am using a sound wall similar to what you’ve mentioned and plan to keep a lock image over the unknown patterns until we unlock them together with our lesson. I debated on creating a sound wall of my own with the Fundations key, but opted not to so that students can be exposed to more examples of words that make the sound… we’ll see how it works and if it’s too confusing I will maybe create my own next year. Look forward to Day 2!

I would put the sound cards all up at the same time. More precocious children will “learn” them on their own and you can put a Gold star ⭐️ sticker on the cards you’re working on until they’re all taught. 🙂

I have a suggestion for preventing missing furniture that works well at the schools I have worked at. Place a piece of painter’s or masking tape labelled with your name/room number on every big piece of furniture that you know will be removed for floor cleaning. It makes it easier for custodial staff to put the furniture back after they’ve washed/waxed the floors. And…will prevent furniture scavengers who might think the piece is up for grabs.

In my classroom I use sticky-tack or blue-tack to hang up my mini posters! Highly recommended!

Love the idea of a phonics wall. Much more useful in my opinion. I would put up the cards as you teach them. In my experience, ; children will most likely want to use the wall if the GPCs on shoe are familiar to them. I would not worry if it looks empty, just have a nice title. I would use pocket squares or simply whitetac/glue squares to stick the GPC cards to the cabinets. Another option would be pocket charts you attach over the cabinet doors with over-the-door hooks. As they are high up, I would make sure to keep a meter ruler or a long pointer nearby, so that you and/or the children can point to cards. Have a great year. The classroom already looks wonderful.

I feel so bad for you not getting your kidney table back. That happened to me several times with a kidney table, file cabinets snd bookcases. Finally, our school or maybe our district adopted the practice of making several pages of Avery labels with our name on them that we had to stick on every piece of furniture that was in our room at the end of the year. It helped. I was never missing furniture after that

I would put sound cards up as u go. I use something called teacher tape to hang everything...works awesome!
Definitely leave your desk by the outlets. I teach in Atlanta and we have to do concurrent teaching for quarantined students. I currently have 18 in person and 3 that are quarantined for 14 days so definitely plan for a Roomies and Zoomies situation unfortunately.
Some ideas I had while watching: Crate seats with the square table at the front of the room for the “ipad center” you wanted to do? Also maybe use double sided tape for the “phonics wall” pieces and possibly the letters! (I hope I worded that okay! 😅) I don’t know if the water heater will be an issue but for your mailboxes maybe put them in front of your desk and not behind so that if a student needs to grab something from it they don’t invade your teacher space! Great way to also put missing work or work they need to catch up on if you don’t already have a system for that! Hope this helps!
Classroom setup will be good prep for the pup being left alone when you’re back full time
Welcome back! I hope your summer was grand. Teddy is adorable. Congratulations on being a pet parent. If you keep the circle table, perhaps it could be the student of the day or VIP space. Why are they not letting you use fans if there is no air conditioning? I have been following you from the start and remember you painting those closet doors. Would they allow you to paint the chalkboard as well? 🐶
I might send out an email that I have it and see if anyone is missing it by mistake! After the kidney table situation I would hate to inadvertently take somebody’s circle. 😂 No fans was a COVID rule last year - we don’t have much guidance yet for this year but I’m assuming it will stay the same.

When we weren’t allowed to have carpet a number of teachers bought those puzzle mats which we were allowed because they could be wiped down. Maybe something to fill the room up a bit 🤷🏻♀️
Someone at your school has sticky fingers- remember you lost your bookshelf thing a while back too. You should put painters tape all over it or something so it's uniquely yours and less likely to be grabbed.

I think I would use poster board or foam board and make a big fun piece of art I could zip tie to the fan so you can't be accused of using it and its not a big black trash bag...
I would put the sounds up as you learn them.

NOT ok that somebody snatched your kidney table! At my school we send out an email stating what we are missing if things get misplaced by custodians after summer cleaning and "ask" that whoever has it to let us know. You definitely need that returned. Good luck and happy school year!

Ugh-- the kidney table situation. You want to hope no one would "claim" a table or other things, but sadly it happens (we expect better from our students, but...you know). I started writing an identifying mark under the table top in a specific spot-- that way I could tell the custodians to check for it. Like you, I would never go into someone's room and just take something, even if I was pretty sure it came from my room.
I think I might add a little pink sharpie heart on the underside of the table! Great advice, thank you. 💖

Yes! Unfortunately, the kit came with the room and some things are missing/damaged. I want to keep everything cohesive with the same images and keywords, hopefully that will adequately support the Fundations curriculum!
