    I know we throw around the word 'underrated' quite a bit to the point where it doesn't have a lot of meaning; but Martel to me - might actually be *the most* underrated guy of that 89-93 period. He was a total workhorse and arguably the best TV guy they had. Watching a lot of tapes he's almost regularly in the best match of the night week after week. The Jake Roberts blindfold match is one of the coolest, most creative gimmick matches in Mania history and I believe he was the first guy to go crazy long in the Rumble (51 minutes) back in 91... it just got overlooked by Flair going full on wire to wire the next year.
    He was a spectacular character though. I'm surprised he didn't at least get a brief reign with the Intercontinental Championship or something.

    • @markusalcudia
      @markusalcudia 3 года назад +20

      Rick Martel definitely deserves the term "underrated" in all its positive meaning.
      He was a great babyface as a tag-team wrestler, and he was an even better heel with his "The Model" gimmick.
      His appearance on "The Brother Love Show", asking Bruce Pritchard to hand the blind man's cane to Jake Roberts was priceless.
      Or him and HBK squaring off at Wrestlemania, trying not to hurt each other's faces... Hilarious.

      I remember going to a house show before the Mania blindfold match at the University of Illinois where they did that blindfold match almost as a dry run and being before cell cameras and wide use of the Internet they could get away with it knowing that it would be hard to get the footage out to give away anything. Anyways Martel used the perfume but it backfired and Roberts one. Was fun to see at a house show.
