castle Art are oil based. oil based Is harder to blend but offers alot more detail and they don't break as easy also stay sharpened alot better they resemble polychromos more then prismas if your looking for a really good affordable prisma alternative I'd recommend staedler they are really good and can be found in Walmart or Amazon

The original set of Castle arts are definitely a wax-based pencil. The newer set of castle arts that were released not too long ago, the gold version, our oil based.

Interesting to see how these pencils work, and you've worked magic. I always thought Neenah paper was for alcohol markers, and I used it by mistake one time and found the pencils didn't work well, now I know what might have been the problem. Thank you Pamela 💖

I have another paper I use for markers. When you’re using markers you want to use a smooth thicker paper. The Neenah paper is toothier and therefore it grabs onto the wax of the pencils and works much better with colored pencils.

Could you do a tutorial on how you got that beautiful flower on her hat? Try as I might, I can never replicate that look. I don't have Castle Arts pencils, but I do have Prismas and Arteza 120. I'd appreciate any help you can offer. Oh, I should mention I'm doing a limited color challenge, and can only use scarlet lake, yellowed orange, and sunburst yellow, in addition to all the greys, black, and white. Thanks again for your great tuts. ❤️

I have to say that I am finding them excellent in the Johanna Basford books. I've not got Prismacolor pencils but from the less expensive ranges these are way ahead of anything else I have tried and better than couple of more expensive and supposedly superior brands. They will layer and blend really well, and as you say have some lovely colours.
btw, I have found the Castle Art's own white pencil works really well for blending and making a layer to work into further but perhaps I'll buy a white Prismacolor and compare.

Pamela, Thank you so much for telling us about using the Prismacolor white pencil to add blendability to our budget pencils. Because this is an older video, what paper would you recommend to use for our colored pencils now? If I would like to lay down alcohol markers for a base coat and color over it with colored pencils, what paper would you recommend that would be smooth enough for the markers and yet have just enough tooth for laying over the marker with colored pencils? You demonstrated this technique not too long ago in Colorit's "Colors of the Jungle" book on the page with the elephants. Colorit sends me a free coloring page from one of their coloring books to download every Friday, and I would like to know the best paper to copy them onto for just colored pencil, just alcohol marker, and for laying a base coat of marker with the addition of colored pencils to add dimension and detail. Can you help me with that? The picture you are doing here is coming out so beautifully! I love the brightness of her eyes! Do you have a tutorial on the method you had to use to get the flowers on her hat so well done? I believe you mentioned having to so something extra to get them to come out so well. Thank you so much for always generously sharing helpful hints with us!

Dear Pamela, Do you or any of my fellow subscribers to your RUclips videos know if the 250 and the 251 black printer ink for the PIMA MX922 all-in-one printer would be ok for printing coloring pages on the Springhill paper you mentioned? Would they work for pencils, alcohol markers and water-based markers? I think you have mentioned another paper for pencils and one for markers, but the names escape me at the moment. Would water-based and alcohol markers be okay with my printer ink, too, and if so, should I use a different paper for them?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but does the wax layer from prismsa help you to be able to put on more layer? Or does it just help to blend. One thing i've notice with budget pencils is that you can not put on two many layers. I'm not observant, i i haven't had any experience with artist grade pencils, so i can't really tell.

Because you said that these pencils do not perform as well on Amazon paper, does that mean that Amazon produces and publishes their own coloring books, and that is where they use Amazon paper, or does it mean that if I purchase Johanna's "World of Flowers" book from Amazon, instead of somewhere else, would it have been printed on Amazon paper instead of the paper used in her original publication? I am a real beginner, so I just want to be sure I am buying what I think I am when doing so.

    • @PamelasPassionforPencils

The books on the Amazon paper are the ones like Jade Summer, Deborah Muller, Hannah Lynn that you order right from Amazon. You can order those books and print on your own paper. There is a link in the description of all my videos for my favorite Springhill paper that is wonderful for PDF printing. I love these pencils on that paper. Johanna Basford's World of Flowers or any of her books have wonderful paper.

I have the Castle Art and not impressed. In the budget range of coloring pencils, I prefer the oil based ones, such as the Marco Raffines and better yet if you can afford them the Marco Renoirs. And blending liquid does not seem to do anything great either. The white pencil does not do what it should either, now the Prisma one does blend them though.....with a lot of extra work though.....not that interesting......way too much work.
