San Diego had already been a town for just over 100 years. This map is of "New Town", and the original settlement is Old Town. The 2 islands were joined after this map was made by filling in the area between the two. The south island is Coronado, and the north one is North Island. The bay front had been filled in some because it extends beyond Front Street where the bay front was. State Street is 2 blocks west of Front. This area of New Town is where Alonzo Horton subdivided and sold lots.
I wonder if the "Flouring" factory is the same brick building that housed the 4th and K antique mall in the 1990s. Star of India wasn't moored there because it was still an active sailing vessel in 1870; it would have only been 7 years old, and likely transporting passengers between England and Australia. I have photos my grandmother took of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles when she arrived in 1925. It was practically empty. We had huge growth here starting in the 1920s, and even more after WWII.

The 2 peninsulas weren't joined until 1950, well after this map was made, and we'll after New Town, aka, downtown, was established.
