The Show Must Go On” is a compellingly powerful final coda to Freddie’s legacy. The song closes Queen’s final studio album release, "Innuendo", during Freddie’s lifetime. While “The Show Must Go On” was mainly written by lead guitarist Brian, the song’s theme is driven by the probability it would be Freddie Mercury’s “finale”. His severe symptoms made recording Innuendo difficult.
The “Innuendo” recording sessions were completed by November 1990; the album was released in February 1991. After those sessions, Freddie continued to record studio vocals as much as his health would allow. He loved his work; or rather, he passionately loved making music, and had always tried to keep his personal life private.
During these last recording sessions sometimes Freddie was so ill he could barely walk, making the recording process erratic, emotionally wrought, and logistically difficult for the band, especially for Brian, a studio perfectionist.
Jim Hutton, Freddie's partner of 7 years commented that the line,
    My make-up may be flaking
But my smile, still, stays on
was so accurate because no matter how bad Freddie felt, he never complained.
Brian told a feeble Freddie not to over-exert himself during a session for the final track’s vocals, intimating he wasn’t up to the challenge. According to Queen lore, a frustrated Freddie responded by slamming a shot, or two, of vodka, saying, “I’ll fucking do it, darling”. Brian recalled Freddie’s performance:
He went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal"
And the show has very much gone on …

The fact that Freddie did this song in one take, after slamming down a glas of whiskey or vodka (can't remember), when he was so ill even Brian was concerned if he could do it, is completely mind blowing to me 🤯 This song is not put together piece by piece or has been edited with autotune. It's just the raw power of Freddie. It truly showed his strength, passion and work ethics. I'm in awe, and I admit I needed a napkin for your reaction.

This song always puts things into contrast regarding other performers who cancel gigs for the slightest reason. They need to listen to this song and realise that Freddie's life was nearing it's end yet he could still must up the strength and courage to record epic vocals as only he could. Even after the Innuendo album he wanted to created as many songs as he possibly could which were eventually finished by the other band members to create the Made In Heaven album which still has some unreal vocals from Freddie taking into account he was literally dying on his feet. There will NEVER be another like him. R.I.P. Freddie, the GOAT.

What a song to remember because this was released in late 1991 just before he died. The music video "These are the days of our lives" written by Roger Taylor for a different reason of his own, until Freddie sang it then it had another meaning, that was the last video they made with Freddie. Freddie's last song was 'Mother Love'.
He sang each line rhree times til he had to rest. He told Brian that he'd finish it later but he couldnt, and did not return to the studio, so Brian sang the last verse, and put Freddie's best lines together for the first verses. It's my favourite song by Queen. The quick pieces at the end were taken from every video they did, ending with the baby's newborn cry, as if Freddie had indeed returned to his Mother, as requested in the song. I dont know if you've heard or reacted to 'Mother Love', but knowing the story _before_ listening to it helps to truly appreciate how much Freddie tried to finish on a high.

During these times, Freddie's body was quite weak. The whole world knows how talented Freddie is when it comes to music. But, for me I really admire him because of his courage to face his illness, and music is what gives him strength. He thinks more about the welfare of his brothers in the band, his family and until the end give satisfaction to his fans. IMO, this song is his farewell for us. Although his body is weak, his singing skills and voice remained excellent. Although I feel sad when I hear this song, I am happy that you got to hear one of my many favorite Queen songs. This is Freddie. I wanted to put those words in his mouth. And it was a gift from God. I don't even know where those lyrics came from. So I presented it to him next time he turned up to the studio. By that time he was suffering a lot, he could barely stand. I played him the demo with me singing which was extremely high and difficult. He downed a couple of vodkas, proppet himself up on the desk and worked his way through singing all of that song. And it was amazing. I think It's one of his finest performances of all time.

I believe this song was Freddie's way of telling the band (and the world) to continue to enjoy and perform good music for everyone to enjoy... the banana head was a clip from "I'm Going Slightly Mad", written about, IMHO, Freddie's mental health at the time considering the drugs he was taking for the illness. “We didn’t discuss what the meaning of the song was, but it was of course evident in the background that it was an attempt to give a voice to the feelings that Freddie’s valiant fight against AIDS created in all of us, and even in Freddie. He was too low in energy to create it himself. But I had one unforgettable special afternoon working together with him on solidifying the lyrics of the first verse of this embryonic song about a clown whose make-up hid his pain, before he slid out to attend another treatment. That gave me enough lyrical material to later expand into the eventual two verses.”

The Show Must Go On was a very real and pertinent song for Freddie . There have been many covers by other artists but to hear it performed by the dying man himself makes this the most powerful. Mother Love is another very emotional song--the last song Freddie attempted to sing but couldn't finish so Brian sang the final verse. I could swear that I read in an interview with Brian somewhere long ago that the song was sort of about Freddie's long and close relationship with Mary Austin and a farewell to her (but I've never been able to find more information on that). I believe the song was written by Freddie and Brian. He and Brian didn't write songs together usually until the end when Freddie's health worsened. (I absolutely HATE the official video though-an astronaut in space-for the song. It has NOTHING to do with the song itself and detracts from the emotional impact.)

You’re wondering how he felt in that last period of his life when he knew he didn’t have much left, and while he never talked about it you can see it in his last music video ever, “These Are The Days Of Our Lives” written by Roger about his kids and how he felt about the passage of time but he thought it fit Freddie’s situation better, it’s worth checking out even though it’s really hard to see him in such contrast to how he was in past music videos, at the very end he looks into the camera and says I still love you, that was his way of saying goodbye to the fans

Brian (1995): At the beginning there was just a cord sequence played by Roger and John but I had a feeling that it was important. I got impassioned and beaver away at it. I sat down with Freddie, we decided what the theme should be and wrote the first verse. We were dealing with things that were hard to talk about at the time, but in the world of music you could do it.

Hi Folks! Coach, your sense of timing is most piquant! Oh, how I love this video. The Doc wrote it as Freddie was literally on his deathbed-asked him if he was okay with the lyrics. "Give me anything!" His Majesty commanded and we have a song that will live forever. I think he'd be quite pleased to see just how indeed the show has gone on. Speaking of which, take your time, we'll be here when you get settled. Just remember, it takes two weeks to pack and two years to un. Love you guys!

The clip with Freddie wearing a banana headpiece is from the ‘I’m Going Slightly Mad’ video! I believe that the video was shot in black and white because they didn’t want to show how pale Freddie was during that time (I may be wrong). The clips where Roger is wearing a kettle on his head, Brian is walking around with penguins and John is wearing a jokers hat are also from the same videoclip. I’m sure that you guys will like it!

I’m going to quibble on a small point. This is not “good art”, this is “great art”. To this lifelong Queen fan, it’s their best song of all. It bring chills over my body and tears to my eyes every single time I hear it, and has done so since 1991 when I had this LP on cassette tape in my car during college. This LP is not for the faint-hearted. But it’s a masterpiece. Bijou, I’m going slightly mad, headlong, and many more deserve a Coach & Mrs Coach listen. Stay open minded, the songs are maverick in many ways. Love watching your reactions. You’re obviously good people and I appreciate you both!

The video with the bananas is I'm Going Slightly Mad. The song was about how the medication he was taking for his illness was causing him to not always be as sharp mentally. He always tried to have a positive outlook, and he made light of the situation with this video. Freddie was an exceptional man in so many ways, which is why so many of us love him. Another song that's really good and was made after his diagnosis is Headlong. That one has some great guitar by Brian, too. Keep up the great work, Mr and Mrs Coach!

Freddie was gravely ill at this point, weak, in constant pain and barely able to stand. Yet when Brian asked whether he'd be be able to sing the song, Freddie responded, "I'll f***ing do it, darling!" He leaned on the recording console in the studio, downed a couple of shots of vodka, and this was the result. If we didn't think he was beyond extraordinary before, this ought to convince us.

He was freezing and in terrible pain. Half of his right foot was missing from the karposy Sarcoma from the virus.
