That goes back to what Ichigo said. He was becoming more hollow as Ulquiorra became more human. You can tell how Kubo tried to make this fight more than just power ups.
Another cool thing is that Ulquiorra is basically testing the concept of the heart constantly in this arc, trying to prove that it's not enough in the face of overwhelming power difference. But it's literally the heart that allows Ichigo to breaks all the barriers, even to the extreme of death and win.

at the cost of loosing his aspect of death. and because of that.. he perished faster.
In the manga, after Ichigo severed Ulquiorra's arm, he threw that severed arm back at Ulquiorra. In the anime however it's replaced by Ichigo throwing a giant boulder.

There was some slight censorship going on in those episodes, in the manga Ulquiorra didn't just break Ishida's arm, he ripped it off, thats why he talks about stopping the bleeding.
And it's likely why Ichigo's first move was to cut off Ulquiorra's arm (in the manga he also threw it at him later instead of that boulder), he really was on that an eye for an eye shit.
First time knowing about that .. I should definitely check it out.
Basically anywhere you see a limb or body part "looking dirty" or "covered in scratches" from here on in the TV show you can pretty much imagine those body parts torn off or gone in the manga.

ulquiorra really resembels his aspect of death "emptiness". Still he tries to fill the emptiness, which really shows that hollows are fallen souls trying to fill their emptiness (mostly by killing people)

unlike aizen, he wasn't entirely EVIL, he only followed orders and was curious. even though he did ichigo so dirty, it felt sad to lose him, his death impacted us all even though he was an enemy of the souls society, peak writing kubo!!!

He wanted to cross the line between Soul Reapers and Hollows and then go to Soul King. It was never said what he wanted. From what we know from his conversation with Urahara he hates that "this thing" (aka Soul King) rules. Maybe he just wanted to kill him.

@@tiradeee It’s hard to say anything about SK. He was just there making sure that all 3 realms are stable. From what we hear from yhwach he wasn't a pretty good father. How you would feel if you would be ruled by something that does nothing? Aizen wanted to become stronger and stronger and he was doing it yet there was something outside of his reach. It's pretty obvious that he wanted to do something about it.
Ulquiorra is one of hell well written character tbh. Trully of the greatest of Bleach.
Everyone expected this fight to be crazy way back when. Even today it holds up. Giving the bad guy the growth arc while making the main the monster is brilliant.
Ulqiorra was the epitome of a hollow. He was ruthless, powerful, driven by instinct, and ultimately a pitiable creature.
He's the last of the original hallows so it makes sense. The Soul King was the only one that could kill members of that species.

@@furiousdestroyah9999 after talking to Retsu Unohana during their return to the human dimension in chapter 382, Ichigo mentioned that he doesn't even have half of his ratsu because ino heals wounds and it takes a long time to restore spiritual energy.
This way it can be assumed that the ichigo version of the shinigami was not in the best shape during the fight.
Maybe the half-assumption is an exaggeration, although 70% was possible

@@KuroiHoshiV fair enough but Aizen left him behind to fight ichigo for a reason. And I think Aizen knew about Ulquiorra's second release stage too. Aizen for me wanted ichigo to have the toughest test from all the Espada, Ulquiorra being that final test before Aizen himself faced off with him, which tells me he was the true number 1. Barragan was getting hurt by a missile before he died by his own power and Stark got beat by a captain who did not even use his bankai. I wasn't impressed by either but I was by Ulquiorra.

I'm surprised he didn't have a trauma 😂
1. The line "I will protect you" is often looked at as a straightforward action, but it's actually a call back to Ichigo's base trauma. He couldn't protect his mother, his weakness caused her death, so he fears that happening all the time. That's why Orihime's "Help Me" was such a big trigger.
2. The whole in the heart symbolism is amazing, always loved the climax of their conversation on the heart. Ichigo fights with his heart to protect those around him, Ulquiorra in an attempt to understand the heart took Ichigo's heart quite literally, and what is a human without a heart...We call that a monster. Ichigo became a monster to protect those around him, tho as we saw with how he almost hurt Orihime, a monster ultimately hurts everything. This plays into a bigger theme of Ichigo refusing to accept the monstrous side of him, this entire arc is supposed to show Ichigo becoming more hollow-like (which is why his time with the mask keeps increasing). The issue is that he still doesn't accept that side, he tries to use it as a tool rather than understand that it's as much as himself as the good parts. Ultimately we are all a bit of black and white and denying either of those helps no one and hurts everything.
It can also be interpreted as white telling Ichigo he will protect him as he takes control.
Perhaps the most famous fight from Bleach. And keep in mind that VL Ichigo is nerfed because most of his Shihakuso is destroyed.

Spiritual Bond (the OST that played when Ulquiorra die) is a beautiful OST, especially the cello part.
of all Monster transformation across all shonen, this one is probably the most poignant. Kubo really nailed the design and the power level of VL Ichigo and considering later reveals it becomes even more awesome.
the most saddest part is the past of ulqiorra, that sadly for some reason was to in the anime. He is the aspect of death that replenishments emptiness. He was always empty unable to fell emotions of any kind thats why he wanted everyone to fell despair. And the we learn that he is all alone, by the means that he is different form everyone in every single aspect. Before he became an arrancar the only sense he had was sight, even after that continues, he had no goal or something like that. He had theregenerationthat others had lost and yea even his second form was a symbol of his emptiness bcs no one else had one as well
This is the hypest I've ever been watching anime. And at first I thought it was an asspull until I remembered the king and the horse speech. This was a moment that definitely shaped anime for the better. And ulquiorra became one my favourite villains ever.
Even less of an asspull after the reveals in the TYBW as well.

Watching this fight the first time growing up i didn’t get any feels but when Ulquiorra was talking at the end this time around hits different.
I love how many people just dont realize or gloss over the fact that Vasto Lorde Ichigo used a plain ol', vanilla cero against SECOND release Ulquiorra's super, duper, cero oscuras; and just steamed rolled thru it. That scene needed a spoiler warning

Hey you should watch the movie version of this fight Hell Verse, its much better animation of course and in that version Ulqiorra actually does fight back and and is not stomped like here. And there is much more action in general and is actually how Kubo wanted the fight to unfold realistically.

@@cution97 because the manga was rushed even at that point, people think only the TYBW arc was rushed but thats not the case, Kubo was under a lot of pressure to drop manga chapters even when he was sick, so he wasnt able to do things the way he wanted them to. In the movie he had a lot of say in how he wants things to look, as he will now in the anime, the first thing being Ichigo’s getsugatensho that will now be yellow like he always said it was, but in the anime it was blue. Also we will probably see more fights that didnt happen in the manga and hopefully a different ending that made absolutely no sense in the manga

Something truly sad. Since he was not killed by a zanpakuto, ullquiorras soul will not be purifyed. Perhaps he found oblivion rather than hell. Im sure hed be happier that way
To be fair he wouldn't even be able to go to hell as it's reserved for hollows that committed atrocities while still being human, while Ulquiorra has never even existed as a human to begin with, if anything, he probably would've arrived at the Soul Society

Espada's release is equivalent to soul reaper's bankai which is stated to be 10 times multiplier in power
so second release is another 10x multiplier top of that or even more

Yeah, it is explained in the additional databooks but never in the manga or the show. Zangetsu's chain is actually connected to his Bankai robe, hence he can "pull" it. You can see how the bandage of his shikai wraps his arm; I guess this is why the sword and the clothing share the power. The skill is even named as "Chain".

Ulquiorra is the Espada that represents Emptiness. And his character perfectly encapsulates that.
He tries to think of everything logically. Why would Ichigo wanna fight him when he's clearly leagues stronger? He doesn't understand the emotions that Ichigo is feeling that makes him wanna fight Ulquiora. Same with Orihime many episodes earlier. He couldn't comprehend why they would risk their lives to come to Hueco mundo to save her.
Bro doesn't understand any emotions at all, and his personality and dialogues show that very clearly.
And I believe that's why he's the only Espada that has achieved a Second Resurrection. Because only he embodies his aspect of Death perfectly. Every Espada represents an aspect of death, but they all reject it in some way except Ulquiora.

If I'm not mistaken, Orihime was not able to heal Ichigo because of how se was feeling at that moment, her powers are based on her emotions, her healing powers are in a whole different category, but her emotions are the key for them to work.

its because of 2 things. She had a really hard time healing him the first time he got merked my ulquiorra because the hollow reiatsu was lingering in the wound.
Secondly, he was already dead.
No, she was unable to heal him because Ulquiorra's reiatsu was on a completely different level. She already had a not so easy time rejecting his reiatsu from Ichigo's chest right before the Grimmjow fight.
Ulquiorra himself stated that her power could not save him... And Orihime in the Fullbring Arc states that she got stronger to avoid Ichigo getting hurt anymore and there's a flashback to the moment Ichigo "died" to Ulquiorra's Cero, ergo, a time where she was powerless to heal him.

She couldn't reject the reiatsu that ulquiora left in the wound.
As aizen said it everything is a matter of reiatsu if you have more reiatsu you can even ignore godlike abilities. I wouldn't be surprised if someone with tremendous reiatsu would be able to brush off stuff like respira (you would need a lot more reiatsu than baragan, but maybe a later stage aizen + hogyoku would be able to crush the respira with simple spiritual pressure for instance)
TYBW SPOILER : same reason gremmy couldn't affect kenpachi's body directly the same way he did others (turning yachiru's bones into cookies for instance), because kenpachi has too much reiatsu and he can't be affected by that ability directly so gremy is forced to change the environment around kenpachi.
There wear like four theatrical movies made from Bleach. They’re basically side-quests that have no major impact on the main storyline. They were even written by other people, not Kubo, so they aren’t canonical.
In one of them go to actual Hell to rescue Orihime (of course it’s her). What matters right now is that the opening of that film is an expanded version of this fight. I won’t spoil anything, but the fact that he lost control and let the Vasto Lorde out was the trigger for the rest of the movie.
And let me say again: not canonical. There’s one centered on Toshiro going rogue to steel something. We don’t know if he did or didn’t (it gets explained by the end of the movie, though), but there’s a lot of lore that pops up in the recent TYBW episodes which directly contradicts the Toshiro movie.
So, don’t worry that they make no sense.
What happened is that the author of the mango, Kubo, got sick. So he was releasing books slower than the anime was putting out episodes. So after where you are here, every once in a while, there’s another side quest.burn some time, focus on the side characters, etc. but since this scene of mindless Vasto Lorde Ichigo is canon, watching the extended cut of the fight is cool.
And I’m not saying any of is BAD. It’s just the anime folks had contracts to fulfill. And once Kubo got better, stuff he created is right by definition, so this filler stuff is pretty, but it adds nothing to the story.
Im pretty sure in the manga… ulquiorra completely ripped uryu’s forearm off but the anime censored it ofc😔

Well White Zangetsu did brag about being the first to use Getsuga Tenshou with Bankai so he was the First to use Cero as well.

Fun fact, it is a small detail in the anime, but the soundtrack that plays during Ulquiorra's death is the same track where Orihime says goodbye to Ichigo when leaving for Hueco Mundo, except without the cello. It's interesting and beautiful how it parallels Orihime's goodbyes to two characters, shedding tears for both of them.

What I love about the Hueco Mundo arc is watching the mirrored character development of Ichigo becoming more hollow like while Ulquiorra becomes more human like. At the end Ulquiorra is at his most human, finally understanding what it means to have a "Heart". While Ichigo has lost everything that made him human and is a full on hollow

He is the strongest espada. I mean Aizen didn't know about his second release and he didn't want him to know so that's why they went to up there fight, so he can't see that.

I just realized how many things the anime censored
I heard another RUclipsrs theory on Ulquiorra. Remember all of the Espada represent an aspect of death. Ulquiorra represented emptiness. When he started to understand what a heart was. What emotions were.. he stopped being the representation of emptiness. And it also aligns when when he turned into dust. It's interesting that he died in that way. The turning to dust part, i didn't see any other Espada do that when they died. It looks more like when normal hollows die and sorta break apart and fade away. They're being purified in that case. So perhaps something similar happened to Ulquiorra.

Also he applied the talion law, eye for an eye, everything that Ulquiorra did to Ichigo/Ishida, he did that back. That wasn't instinct, in a way that was logic.
I love what the author did. While Inner hollow was teaching Ichigo about pure instinct and bloosthirst, this time he applied logic. They are reaching middle ground with their principles and more in sync.
On the other hand, Ulquiorra also changed, he was becoming more humanlike. I love the duality that Kubo created. Pure genius!

You should watch the remade version of this fight in the Hellverse movie (it's short but super cool). Also, there's a version of Ichigo with the broken mask in the Brave Souls game, but it's known as a mastered Hollow form.

Ichigo did indeed die again when Ulq blasted him with the Cero, also you should remember what Hollow Ichigo told him because he never lies. This form is called Vasto Lorde Ichigo aka the same thing the Espada are, Lizzard Ichigo was more of an arrancar. You did catch the fact Ichigo's mask kept evolving when he was in Hueco Mundo ever since the first time it appeared when he unlocked his own powers with the help of Urahara.

Theres no such thing as "vasto lorde ichigo". Thats a fan-made term. Its only ever referenced in official material as "Full hollow" or "perfect hollow". White was not a vasto lorde, he just looked like one. It was a hollow made from many shinigami souls, fused with ichigos reiatsu.
his second etapa is not ranked, so it depends on who you ask... I as a hobby powerscaler would see him as the strongest espada in his 2nd resurrection

I just must point out to you that the Hollow form of Ichigo from this fight is actually Hichigo (Hollow Ichigo). Hichigo even warned Ichigo that he'll try to overcome "the king" if he happens to die. And the level of Hichigo's PETTINESS in this fight is over the top and I am vibing with it!!!!! I love it. Remember what Ulquiorra did to Ichigo from the beginning of the fight! Ulquiorra tried to break Ichogo's arm , boasted about his Cero, threw him around, smashed him by grabbing his head, and tossed him like a rag. What does Hichigo do to Ulquiorra? Same exact things!!!! Also a honorable mention: "My greatest strength is not my attack, but my ability to heal and regenerate. ". In the very end Hichigo heals Ichigo's missing heart instantaneously... This is very important for later in the story as it shows a bit of Hichigo's nature.

Someone else has probably already said this in the comments but the general consensus is that Ulquiorra is still rank 4 even in that second release. After all he only said Aizen hadn't SEEN that form not that Aizen didn't know about it. And considering Aizen is Aizen it seems unlikely that there was anything he didn't know about the Espada. But take that as you will Im not sure the creator ever spoke on the topic but that seems to be the general consensus in the community
