    Not sure why you would compare distros without running system updates. Mint's version of cinnamon isn't older than Ubuntu's--it's newer, actually. It just looks older when you're running a 4-month-old installer.

      Yeah I don't understand this decision either. Why compare arbitrary historical version and not both at thier latest and greatest?

    Well if I didn't say Linux Mint (Yes I am bias), those that know me would run me out of town on a pole if I didn't say Mint! 🤯
    As for Cinnamon, it is true that Cinnamon can be installed on any Linux OS. I do it all the time but Linux Mint has all the other programs to compliment everything as a hole...
    Awesome video!

    As a Windows user (like most people I guess), I had a curiosity about Linux, and tried Linux Mint. It actually worked quite well for me, aside from a couple of minor issues, and one major issue. The issues I had, demonstrated that normal people cannot easily switch to Linux, even now.
    There were the issues of not knowing much about Linux to start with, but I got up and running and got the graphics drivers working properly, and played some games that I downloaded through Steam.
    The first issue was that, if the system was left for a couple of hours, I'd come back to what seemed to be a frozen system, though it wasn't quite frozen, just incredibly slow. This happened every time if left alone. If the system was shut down in the usual way, and then switched on when I needed to use it, it was fine, unless left again. Not a massive issue, but a pain, as it required a hard-reset to resolve each time.
    The bigger issue had was that although the updates had been coming through fine, I had some weird messages that I didn't really understand occassionally, but it still worked and so didn;t worry too much about it. After not using it for a month or two, there was quite a few updates available when I next booted into Mint, I downloaded them in the usual way, but when the system restarted, it didn't get to the desktop anymore. I was able to get the Mint logo, but that was all. I Googled a bit to try and figure it out, but basically, that was the end of my journey with Linux.
    Windows has it's issues, but it is more stable than Linux it would seem.

    • @SwitchedtoLinux
      @SwitchedtoLinux  Год назад +3

      Your first issue is known a problem with Linux that needs to be circumvented on the install. It has to do with the Swap size (You might have seen that setting and didn't know what it was). Be default, it will set a swap size that does not properly come out of hibernation. On the install, select the option for swap with hibernate. The problem is that your system is hibernating but does not have the system configured for it. It is known, but not something people have resolved for some reason.
      The second issue is more odd, especially for mint, but without seeing the system, my guess is that what I had on a system was that the boot sector filled up because as kernels update, it fills it up and by default, Ubuntu (what Mint is based on) fills up the small boot partition causing an error installing the updated kernel. The fix for that is to turn on the kernel cleaning automation in the Linux Mint update manager, or in the terminal, occasionally run sudo apt autoremove

    I've played with Ubuntu Cinnamon for a couple of days. It's difficult to put my finger on it but it lacks the polish of Linux Mint, so I'm sticking with the latter for the moment. There are a couple of odd bugs as well - for example, no matter what I try I can't get Themes to open, and have been unable to work out why not...

    • @misterdrgn5155
      @misterdrgn5155 Год назад +2

      I think the lack of polish comes down to two things.
      1) Ugly theme. It's not just the orange. Look at the power button icon in Ubuntu Cinnamon's menu. It's almost pixelated.
      2) Lack of integrated apps, forcing you to use gnome apps or Ubuntu apps.

    Linux Mint Cinnamon on the whole is my favorite distro. However, one of my PC's (a Beelink SER5 pro mini PC with Ryzen 5800H) kept losing all sound capabilities every 3 days or so. Mint just seemed to forget my PC had sound at all. Rebooting would fix the issue for three days then bye bye sound again. Currently trying out Ubuntu Cinnamon on that PC to see if it fares any better. Currently on third day, fingers crossed that I still have sound when I get home from work tonight!

    You simplified things about kernel hardware support by completely eliminating the new hardware support. For those of us running newer machines, newer kernels are needed actually. I can give my personal example, which it not the worst possible (completely unsupported hardware): the previous kernels did not properly detect the speaker and microphone for my Dell XPS 17 (12th gen Intel), it showed me I had more mics and more speaker systems, which I did not. The kernel in Ubuntu 23.04 detects them correctly. BtW: I think you are mistaken with the "snaps are against the open source philisophy" (or so) line; snap technology is open source; only the "store" is kept by Ubuntu, which comes with minuses and also pluses.

      Mint did not even boot my laptop. And having a later kernel brings quite a lot of niceties, like on Ubuntu 23.04 I can finally have my sound devices (speaker, microphone) detected right. Older kernels did not do it correctly.

    • @nigeljohnson9820
      @nigeljohnson9820 Год назад +2

      @Bill Gabes I think Ubuntu lost its way, when it started to copy the changes Microsoft introduced in windows following win XP. Ironically, one of the windows features I would have liked was the sound event editor. This has never been fully implemented in any of the Linus distros.
      Linux always appears to be short of hardware drivers..

    I've used both mint and Ubuntu cinnamon and the main very big difference in the 2 is basically if you want a operating system that is secure and stable without the hazel of figuring out how to keep everything updated and potentially messing up your operating system then Ubuntu cinnamon is your route. If you know what you're doing and want control on what type of software you want (snap/flatpak) and full control of what kernels you want then mint is the way to go but not recommended if you are starting out with Linux. I personally switched back to Ubuntu cinnamon because its backed by a major software corporation and not community maintained so it has major firmware update support, my 6 year old dell gets regular firmware updates being on there offical flavor compared to mint

    I've been using Mint for a little while (for work and personal use), so this week I installed...Fedora 37 with Cinnamon. The only reason to switch from Mint is for more up to date packages + kernels, and if that's your priority, why not use Fedora. In my case, the reason for switching was Mint's hopelessly outdated version of podman, and Ubuntu 23.04's version is newer but still not ideal.
    Also, Ubuntu Cinnamon's theme is super ugly, imho, and it doesn't come with the Linux Mint themes installed--you have to copy them over manually from a Mint install.

    I set up Linux Mint under ESXi to work remotely on and have it double as a Zabbix server to monitor other web hosts as my current one is not 15 years old. To do that, it needs to be able to do root logins SSH. That's one thing you can't do it. I've set up countless Zabbix hosts on FreeBSD and and have an AlmaLinux I can do it with, but it doesn't work with Linux Mint. Normally you simply edit the config and you're good to go. I will say this is my first Debian-based distro. Weird!
