Unveiling the Magic: How a Willow Garden Arch Transforms Your Cottage Garden

- REMINDER: Most willow varieties will readily root into the ground from cuttings like these. However, this was not the case for me when I used this particular native willow from my parent’s garden three years ago. So knock on wood, I hope it isn’t the case now! You can make this type of structure with almost any young green branches, and can make them pliable by soaking the branches in water for 24-48 hours. This is what they do in the UK to build all sorts of gardens structures.
Just a note I forgot to mention in this video.
Welcome back to Honey Hill gardening friends. Today I am building willow arches in my kitchen garden, planting my sweet peas, and transplanting sweet rocket that have been seeding itself around. I hope you enjoy today's video. Happy Gardening!

Your garden is so beautiful! The willow arches are so whimsical like a fairy garden! So glad you’re back and continuing to heal well. Take care Samantha!
Thank you so much, Denise!
My, how wonderful you have access to that beautiful willow. It's going to be stunning when the sweet peas and clematis climb to the top.
The arch looks amazing!! Wakefield toppers are so cute!! I have some also but I need those stakes!!
It looks exactly like a cottage garden now! Especially with the sweet rocket popping up everywhere. I love that messy wild look ❤
Can't wait to see your sweet peas in bloom. Bonny
Hello, your video popped up on my RUclips. I Love this!!!! It turned out so wonderful!!!! Beautiful garden!! Love the stakes too!
Thank you so much, Jeanine! 🌻
Yes, your garden is coming alive. Beautiful plants blooming. Thank you for sharing and have a great Sunday!
🙏🏻🌻
I love those little finials! I bought some beautiful pottery garden finials when I visited Germany.
Wow! Looks so beautiful.
The trellises turned out beautiful! So enchanting, like it is right out of a Beatrix Potter illustration🌿
Absolutely gorgeous 🍃🌺🍃
Your garden is absolutely beautiful! Csnt wait for your garn tours this year 😍
Thank you, Cheryl! Can’t wait to share a tour soon! Lots of cleanup and planting to get to in the meantime. 🌻😅
Enchanting arches, the sweet peas are going to be so “sweet” rambling up and over them. 😊I don’t have access to willow branches but would love to find an alternative branch to use. Very nice gardens!
This is beautiful!!
Thank you so much, Gina!
LOVE the way the arches came out. I have a question though. Here in CT not sure if its the same there but if I were to put a branch of one of my willow trees( I have every kind of willow tree) if I were to put it in the dirt, it would grow into a tree. That is actually how I have all of my willows. I just put a piece of stick in the ground and it grew into a tree. So how are you not getting a tree ? or are you? I am only asking because I want to make these arches but would like to know how to stop the arch from turning into a tree
deezie
It is true, most willow will readily root into the ground from cuttings, and if you have this experience I would not use willow. You can use any other young green branches, and you can soften almost all by soaking in water for 24-48 hours if they are not pliable enough. Knock on wood, these didn’t root in for me three years ago so I’m hoping that is the case this time.
@@HoneyHill ohhhh I thought so, thank you so much. I will try some other branches, I HAVE to do this. Its so cotttagey whimsical looking* love it
Love, love these videos. Anything natural like that is amazing! Probably waaay more cost effective too because wow trellises are expensive. The natural look is so pretty too.
Thank you, Adaline! It’s nice to have the option to change structures out from season to season. 🌻
I’m totally inspired by your arches, they look wonderful. I’m in the UK and been desperately waiting to put my sweet peas out, so I’m going to do it this week after I’ve made an arch. Thanks for your fab videos and inspiration ❤
Your arches look great and you’ve given me inspiration to try the same in my enclosed garden. TYFS❤️
Happy garden 🌸
I just harvested some wild willow branches to create a living arch.
They currently have leaves and I like that look (I’m hoping they’ll root & become a living arch). How long did your leaves stay on the branches before they dried and fell off?
Do you have a video showing how you build your wooden raised beds?
I don’t, unfortunately. I had designed these and had them built by my father before I started a channel.
I did this in my garden and my willows took root and began to grow. It was unexpected and caused a bit of issue. Looked beautiful though.
Yes, definitely can happen. Didn’t have this happen last time but the branches I used had dried out for at least a week or two before I used them last time. Will likely be pulling these at the end of the season so I can do something different next year.
Can you link your cute sweater and boots!! ❤
The sweater is a couple seasons old, I’m afraid. The boots are linked in the description though!
@@HoneyHill Thanks! I tried to click the link on the boots but there was an issue getting to it. Also, can you share the brand of sweater please!!! Anything with sheep on it I love!! Maybe I can find it preloved somewhere. Thank you!!!
I want to make a garden for my son that has passed away. Where can I start? I have never gardened. My biggest gardening experience is planting flowers from Home Depot around my mailbox
Oksana, I am so sorry for your loss. Assuming you have flower beds, or an open area already I'll give you a few important tips to get you started. 1. Start with your soil. Healthy soil equals healthy plants. You can't go far wrong adding organic compost to any soil type. 2. Make sure you have a basic drip system set up or a hose nearby to keep your new plantings watered. Regular water is key. Poke your finger about an inch into the soil, and if it is dry you know you need to water (once you've started planting). 3. Think about a color palette, a white garden would be lovely for a memorial. I plan to create one myself. 4. Plant in odd numbers, 3-5-7-9, it creates more balance. 5. Plant more of less, try not to start off with two many things, you'll have more impact with 5 or so varieties and planting larger quantities of them. 6. Try easy to grow plants like hardy geranium, catmint, lavender, hydrangea, lambs ear, perennial grasses, etc. 7. Finally, you can try to fill in the space with easy to grow annual seeds like cosmos, zinnias, and sunflowers. I hope this is helpful, wishing you hope and healing.
Love the arch! Any chance willow will root in beds?
Willow definitely can root, knock on wood I haven’t had that happen with these same branches. 🤞🏻
I was thinking the same thing, cause the willow is green enough to offer some surprises! 😊
hi😊
