Millions of Americans across the country have lost their jobs. But whether or not those people can get the unemployment benefits they deserve actually depends on where they live. In some states, more than two thirds of jobless people typically collect unemployment benefits. But in others, like Florida, fewer than one in 10 unemployed people get those benefits.
That massive difference has often been blamed on technology; Florida’s unemployment system is notoriously difficult to use. But technology doesn’t build itself. The real explanation requires a look at the ideology of the people who did.

Being poor is a full time job. It’s expensive to be poor.
I live in Canada and they set up a fund where recent post-secondary graduates can apply to get $1250 a month if COVID prevented them from being able to find work. The form took 5 minutes to fill out and was so simple and straightforward. Got my money no problem.
In Chile we get a box of food (only if you are really poor). The unemployment benefits are to keep your job but with a fraction of the pay and it get smaller every month.

While this is true, there a many exclusions to this financial aid. For the website not to work either two things have happened:
The contractors cut corners on the code of the website creating a vast amount of issues that could occur.
The contractors were deliberately told go make sure the system was not smooth making it much harder to apply online.
As a software developer, the bad experience achieved described about Florida's unemployment form is very likely to come from an unexperience team and not by design. Delloite has multiple teams, some are good and others are bad, there are differences withing this team about the UX they want to implement and the programming skills and features that are needed in order for the UX to be actually good and usable. I've seen teams made this kind of errors a lot and I guarantee they were trying to suceed, but weren't ready for their goals
Did this video explain how the problems with the site were political and not due to programming errors?
And then they launch before testing it?
I wish I didn’t have to scroll so far to see the screaming flaw in this piece. Deloitte and other contracting firms are infamous for subpar developers. The way media reports things, it’s no wonder we have such divisive politics. This video was the liberal equivalent to a Fox News panel.

Everybody in the comments is saying the US’ welfare system is broken, but they fail to realize it was built to be difficult. If welfare was easy to obtain, more people would feel less of a need to get a job, this explains why welfare is hard to get and payments are low, and it also explains why the US’ poverty rate is lower then the “developed” countries it’s compared to. The poverty rate in the US is only 12%, compared to 20% in the UK and 15% in Germany. Considering the US’ size and population, these numbers are amazing, the welfare system is not broken, but instead effectively encouraging people to get jobs.

New Zealand benefit system isn't that good really. Mainly thanks to National gutting the system and imposing more restrictions. I live in New York State, and it only took me three weeks to get my benefits. I applied the Tuesday after I lost my job, as recommended due to the first letter of my last name. I then certified for my benefits weekly until my claim was processed and I started to get my payments. Michael Zeita is right, it's more of a Florida/conservative state issue than an all over America thing. I'm actually pulling in much more money on this unemployment claim than I was working.
