Some great clones… but for me, a big attraction of Metal Slug is the amazing pixel art graphics. I’d love to see the originals remastered for widescreen without changing anything else.
Cyber Lip actually came out 6 years before Metal Slug's 1st game, so it's not technically a Metal Slug clone. Sunset Riders also predates Metal Slug, so that one's not a clone either to be fair.
@@TheyCallMeBruce13 Yeah Contra is probably the first mainstream platform run and gun, I thought maybe Bionic Commando was earlier, but seems Contras release date is about 1 month later than Contra... March 1987... but 1985 Ghosts n Goblins is maybe the earliest take on the action platform shooter...
Great choices bro. CT special forces definitely needs more attention and you already know how I feel about dolphin blue final getting a home release. 😎 I recommend Commando: Steel Disaster as well.
Just finished Broforce, its a great game especially for co-op, the randomness can introduce some truley awesome moments in gameplay, gets really hard in parts but often the best approach is to change up the way you go through the level to get through it.
So good to see a post like this! My fondest childhood memories involved playing the Metal Slug series over and over and over again!! ❤❤❤❤ I love clones because they're aesthetic refreshes to tried and true amazing videogames!!
Back in the day, I had a modded PlayStation 1, from a store in China Town NYC called Penguin Village in the Elizabeth Street Mall. They suggested Metal Slug, so I got the import. It was so awesome. Still one of my favorite series of all time.
Some other suggestions: 1. Elevator Action Returns (Arcade, Saturn, PS2) 2. Huntdown (PS4, X-Box) EAR is an old arcade game, with spectacular set pieces, fast action, and multiple characters. Huntdown is more modern, and while a little more tactical, has solid gameplay, neat bosses, and some awesome sprite work, plus some really solid music and audio.
thank you man! I have been looking for demon front for a decade now, I played it on a Candy Cab at the Northwest Pinball Show, around 2012 or so when they were still in the Olympic and cascade rooms. Blew my mind as a ~10 year old
Don't forget that in Mercenary kings you can create your very own unique weapon, you can mix parts of a shotgun with a minigun, laser gun or a sniper, even a missile launcher
Another quality vid! Wouldn’t mind to hear some of your recommendations for MetroidVania style games MJR. I like those! And there are a lot of indie companies that make them.
I just wanna say, I've been watching you since 2012, I remember my favorite shit ever back then was gamer eats and drunken master paul and you restoring that MAME arcade machine, your videos haven't popped up in my recommended for a couple of years now and I stopped watching that much youtube once I started college cause I got busy with my workload. You were the first RUclipsr who responded to my comment, even if it was full of spelling and grammar errors cause I was 12 and English is not my native language I just remember that making my day. The moment I saw this video pop up in my feed I had to click it and see what are you doing now, I gotta say, your videos are just as good as I remembered watching them back in the day, you're one of the ogs keep rocking on. Kind of a long cheesy story, but I just wanted to thank you for years of good videos and for making my childhood that much better.
The game still receives patches from time to time, I believe earlier this year there was another one (on PS4 at least) I got my 100% thophies already in it so I had my time with that game xD IronBro mode was so annoying to beat alone...
I own Sunset Riders and its a lot of fun.. Cyber-Lip and Dolphin Blue immediately get added to the LIST!! haha .. Mercenary Kings Reloaded is worth looking more into.. but all these looked fun and I love the aesthetics of them!
sunset riders came out in 1991 and metal slug came out in 96. sunset riders is a contra clone. although i actually prefer sunset riders to contra. thankfully i got my super nintendo in the late 2000's for 14 bucks way before it exploded in price.
Really good video, thanks. Great selection of games, and good to see games that may have influenced the design of Metal Slug, as well as games that came after it. Would definitely like to see more of this type of video.
I wanted Dolphin Blue and an Atomiswave kit so bad back when I had a Neo Geo cabinet. Glad I can check it out on the Dreamcast now. You’ll want to also check out In The Hunt which is Metal Slug in a submarine
I really enjoyed Bro Force! I got stuck towards the end so I put on Eye of the Tiger and cranked it up. Sure enough that pushed me to beat the level first try with Rocky sound track backing me 🤣🤣🤣
Great video and subject. I love Metal Slug of course, and I have CT Special Forces on GBA, which is a lot of fun and looks beautiful. The music is great as well. Also, I just beat Broforce this week! It's one of my favourite games now. So much fun!
Doom troopers on the snes is pretty cool, its actually one of my favourite snes games at the moment, even though i struggle too get past the first level, I'd forgotten how hard games used too be, kids nowadays don't understand what it was like playing games without save states.
Oh no! He forgot Gunstar Heroes. It's impossible!:) And what about Ruff 'n' Tumble? It's deserve more love even it's on Amiga and console guys affraid of it.
How about GunForce II? The developers of that game went on to create the Metal Slug games, and it's very much a spiritual prequel. It's frickin' fantastic, ridiculous fun.
Cyber Lip! Played the crap out of this game. It is very well done for the time it was released. Also put probably 50+ hours into Bro Force. My physical copy arrives in a few months.
Some of these games are definitely not "clones", but merely games of the Run N Gun genre. A great list, but I think a few of these aren't being given a fair chance. It would be like calling Metal Slug a Contra clone.
I was thinking the same thing. I understand that Metal Slug was the inspiration for this video, but this should have been called 9 "Run 'n' Gun" games worth playing instead. Not to mention that two of these games predate Metal Slug.
Matt Hazard: Blood, Bath and Beyond, Shoot Many Robots, B Team: Metal Cartoon Squad, Valfaris, Aliens: Infestation, Duke Nukem: Critial Mass, Gunstar Super Heros
One that came out recently that I love was Blazing Chrome, which is a bit of a blend between Contra and Metal Slug. It's on PS4/X1/Switch/PC. I think I'd also include Hard Corps: Uprising, although *technically* it's a Contra game. Arcade mode is tough as nails, but Rising mode is honestly a great time - with various upgrades to make your playthrough more fun/easier. It's on PS3/360 and I wish Konami would port it to the modern consoles.
Hello Metal Jesus Rocks, nice, my name is Fernando Rodrigo Scaranare, I'm from Brazil and I always follow your games channel! I always leave my likes for your work. I've been a gamer since I was a kid, and it's always a nostalgia to relive these games that marked our generations and of course good old rock and roll! God bless your channel and your life! I am a Brazilian football fan of Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras 🐷💚, and I wish you alviverdes greetings! Brother hug recording!
It's still surprises me that metal Jesus has not hit 1 million subscribers. More than well deserved at this point. Keep up the great videos look forward to them.
Broforce is such an underrated co op game! A blast with 4 friends! It needs a sequel a.s.a.p!!
I believe it’s already being worked on
@Figgy Newton same! I've convinced several friends to buy it and i beat it all over again.
@@retrogamerfan123 i hope so!
aggreed! that game is so hillarious with friends
Somehow passed me by… will definitely check it out.
Demon Front! This is such a great video idea. I also love the Metal Slug games and I am always on the lookout for games that have a similar formula.
No way is that one making it back. That has way too many flashes. The will trigger issues in people and thus trigger lawsuits.
@@bradleydeharder5216 weird flex but ok
@@dandiaz19934 weird warning label before each game now these days too 😀
BROFORCE is a 100% buy. It was so great and so fun and the all the heroes were so good. They had so many and it was hilarious.
Yeah was looking at it also and affordable 👍
Metal Slug! ❤️
The reason I got myself an MVS cabinet.
One of My best decisions in life.
Another recommendation: "Guns, Gore, and Cannoli 1 and 2"...both solid games with the second being the absolute best!
Ah, those are great suggestions! Next time I’m mention them for sure
Those are great games 👍👍👍
Ooh the 4 player multiplayer is so much fun with buddies.
+1 for Guns Gore & Cannoloni 1 &2
In The Hunt

@@happyspaceinvader508 Sunset Riders is on the Nintendo Switch. Definitely pick it up.
Alien Hominid is freakishly amazing. Played the hell out of it on Gamecube.
Not mentioned on the video but you can also play Alien Hominid on the Gameboy Advance. It’s an excellent version
Great choices bro. CT special forces definitely needs more attention and you already know how I feel about dolphin blue final getting a home release. 😎 I recommend Commando: Steel Disaster as well.
YES!! Commando: Steel Disaster is sooo good! probably the closest thing to Metal Slug too!
Thanks for the recommendation Reggie!
I never knew about this title, and my gosh what does it resemble Metal Slug extremely closely.
Don't forget "In the Hunt".
Man, Metal Slug is my introduction to video gaming. Glad to know there's so many games similar to it. Great video as always MJR!
Alien Homid certified hood classic

I need to play Demon Front & Dolphin Blue soon! Had them on the radar for a while now!
Do it! If you like metal slug you will not be disappointed. Local arcade near me has dolphin blue !

Love Sunset Riders. One of my all time favourite arcade games. Play it with my boys on ps4. They love it too.
Excellent vid!!! Metal Slug is my ultimate go to game. Thank you for making this video 😃
The first Lelo and Stitch game game really caught me by surprise when i got it as a kid. It was actually a good licensed gba game!
Absolutely love Cyber-Lip. The voice for the computer is hilarious.

I looooved playing sunset riders! Our local arcade has a machine, it’s long gone sadly, the machine that is, the arcade is still in the restaurant!
My local Fred Meyer had a metal slug machine & I would ask my mom to drop me off there while she shopped. Thanks for the video brotha!
I have many of these! I love “clone” videos because you can get introduced to games you never knew about. Great Job MJ. Thank you
Thanks for putting me onto Demon Front. I love it!
Biomechanical Toy is a fun one. Obviously Contra, Gunstar heroes, Alien soldier, are worth playing.
This is a great game. Im looking forward to its release on Evercade next month.
This is such a good reference, thanks again Metal Jesus! I can't wait to get around to play these soon!
