Leo Cheung what you need to do is make each clump of leaves light form the top and dark to the bottom, you can do this my readily making lighter leaves at the top and pressing harder and harder as you get down but still using the same technique he uses
Thank you! Your advice helped me a lot, especially: "remember we are creating an illusion... we don't have to draw every single leaf on the tree". Then... I went back to thinking about shapes, texture, and value... rather than trying to draw little dots... did a lot of layering... value was the definitely the factor that I overlooked.
This is a great video - very helpful. For those that consider drawing this tree as to difficult, remember, with out practice you will never achieve your goals. Don't be so hard on yourselves! Keep at it. You have to train your mind and hands together so they will work together. The only way we can improve is by practice - learn what isn't right by comparing and watching these kinds of videos. Take a day or so off to rest your mind or draw something else, then go back to it. I promise your drawings will improve. That is how I do it and it works well. Oh, to see your progress, keep your work so you can later lay them side by side to see how you are coming along. You CAN do this if you stick with it, practice, objectively observe, and study! Don't give up now!
Thank you for being able to have the kindness to motivate everyone. Thank you for that tip, it does seem to work when I draw my government structures. Thanks again.
I purchased the Colored Pencil course and the Pastel course and both were money well spent. Incredibly easy to follow, well laid out and clear reference photos included. I am useless with Pastels and no matter how excellent the course is, my Pastel drawings look like a two year old has completed them lol, but I have the course for life and will continue to use it and hopefully, fingers crossed, improve. Amazing course and well worth the money, thanks a million.
I'm so glad I watched this video, because the foliage of my trees always seems to lack enough depth, thereby making them look somewhat cartoonish, and this little video showed me exactly what I was doing wrong!!! Thank you so much for making this video's instruction easy to understand for the beginner, and to the point, meaning not full of a lot of unnecessary information, thereby lowering it's value to someone with more advanced skills to benefit from. ~Kari
I really appreciate the time you took to explain what you were doing and why. It is so much better to learn when the artist is going at regular speed . I really needed a refresher on drawing this . So thank you for posting and sharing your talent .
I finally got the concept of how to shade properly in the middle of this exercise. Very happy with the finished product, too. Thanks so much for keep this online for us!
You are an incredibly gifted artist! What's also amazing is your skill at teaching. I'm not an artist by any stretch of the imagination and have never found anyone that could teach in a way that seemed doable. Until now! Thank you very much for sharing your "how to" videos, they are much appreciated :)
I had a hard time making that desing work with my drawing style - it took me 45 min, and I succeeded = the tree looks pretty good, but it doesn't have the glow against its leaves like your does. Thanks for the tips - very helpful.
Thank you so much! dimension and depth hasn't always been my strong suit. I've been asked to do 4 drawings for someone who is willing to pay! who knew? thanks again
While I understood creating an illusion of detail using a wide range of values, drawing trees was still overwhelming. Thanks for clearing that up for me!
If I tried this it would look like a bath sponge. Just goes to show the patience required, and I think thats partly what makes a great artist. Having the time to keep going and not getting stressed about the amount of work it takes to complete a piece of art.
Yeah, and this was the ONE simple hint I was in need of right now. Suddenly, by trying this, it all just started falling in place like magic. Not that the hard work of trying for days and weeks to figure it out by myself didn't help with it, anyway.
I am fortunate to have the gift of drawing. I used to draw a lot when I was a teenager so I put in the practice back then. I lost interest in drawing due to the nature of my job in those days. 8 hours a day on a technical drawing board! (before CAD) Now I have hit retirement and I am slowly getting back into drawing. I showed a friend a couple of drawings and she said “Oh! Can you draw a tree? We want a picture for a wall in our lounge”. Oops 😬 I have never drawn a tree. Thankfully I came across this video and drew a tree in my A5 sketch pad. She now wants me to draw her a tree but on an A2 sheet! I am now preparing myself for the challenge… and to build up my patience. 😂
This looks so straightforward and simple, but it is extremely difficult. I’ve been working on it for a couple weeks, and while there is improvement, I am not remotely close to what’s going on here. The only thing I’ve figured out so far is that you can’t just be aware of the light source, the angle, highlights next to mid tones, etc. I have to have a good idea of what the clump I’m working on is going to look like when I finish it. Also, spend some time really watching to close up for the clumps he is drawing. I still haven’t figured that out yet.
I feel I missed the "patience" part.. I only watched this to see how to draw leaves on the tree but since i put branches it worked really well! Even i I didnt really "learn" to draw the tree he did, I still ended up with a good tree. Since the process in making a tree requires a lot of time, remember the leaves are the hard part; you have to put so much detail in it that it drives you crazy, so just do squiggles like him. the base part of a tree just needs about 30 mins of practice then done! I learned it in 4 mins though because I watched another youtube video about trees, and it was simple too. Many people may not feel this way and im sorry if I offend you in any way. But I do admit making trees are hard, it's the hardest part of making a drawing about nature. I'll go ahead and practice this method now, enough typing for me..
I’m making a graphic novel about ww2 Normandy but I don’t have this much time for one tree. I’ve had luck with drawing leave shapes to build up the foliage quickly and to get a acceptable scene with the least work so I can focus on characters and vehicles.
Thank you 😀 this made so much sense to me.I have listened to other artists and all that do is talk or make it difficult when they draw their piece. Again, I’m excited about drawing a tree.!!!!! Thanks
Linda Teuling maybe he should take a photo after sketching the layer and increase it's contrast so we can see them PLEASE HEAR US!! and thank you for this educational video ☺
WOW! Thank you so much for this tutorial. Though I still have a long way to go, I feel I got the basic technique down and simply have to practice it more to make my trees look good.
I loved this tutorial. I used the same techniques but used the tree in my yard for reference and it turned out okay, my family could at least identify it was our tree lmao 🌳
So consider values well what if you were trying to copy every pencil of a tree refrence already in drawn form the image... is illusion more relevant to when someone sees the exact copy of a drawing so the light, shapes, value and gradiant of pencil is important cause i draw what i see but realistic drawing blows my mind and im trying to learn how to draw hair, trees realistic so on
I feel there is a better way to tackle this. And the range of pencils I don’t feel a 4B is enough to create a good value range. Also blocking out the lighter and darker values in shape would be easier to do first and then go in with a mono eraser and pencil to lift out details at the foreground.
thanks to this, my tree doesn't look like a cloud on top of a stick anymore. lol.
Mine was a mushroom lol
Mine was a cloud with leaves sticking to them
Me 2
Mine just a poop on a dead trunk's.
Exactly!!!
He made it so clear to do!! Usually most instructors make everything overly boring. Loved the drawing and his instructions. Great teacher!
i dont understand how to make the leaves so they don't just look like random dots on the page
Seriously :'(

Same! I don’t know if it’s squiggly marks, dots etc that’s my issue. Ugh
use multiple pencils, such as darker and lighter ones, absolutely worked on my art class project
please don't tell me I'm the only one who started crying trying to do this
Your not alone
bruh i agree
Oh im late but here!
I am present here😂

I proved dat by practicing how to draw Manga for a few years yet it's still not that good but I started off worse

This video is so satisfying to watch. Also, the amount of patience needed to draw trees is insane.
I had a lot of difficulty with making the leaves of the trees look good. This video has helped me a lot ❤
0:23 I love how you pointed out patience cause srsly I need to work on that.

I got this video in my suggestion because I’ve recently made a realistic trees video myself. Well done.
I can't do the texture

Thank you so much for detailed explanation, I have been struggling to sketch realistic tree, now I did it and it looks nice
Glad it was helpful!
I ended with a duck eating a banana on a skateboard.
Not for me apparently.
Not for me either I got a thing that looks like a polka dotted mushroom with acne.
that is what he said the last point....PATIENCE....

Wow, just beautiful. Thanks for the video.

Great instructional video, this has helped me so much, now I want to extend these principals to color. Thank you.
Wow, thanks. I would've never thought that scribbling was a way of drawing leaves. I always tried to draw each one individually :/

This is just what I needed! I don't know how to draw a right texture for a tree I'm drawing and this covers it all. 😀 Thank You!!

I loved this tutorial. I used the same techniques but used the tree in my yard for reference and it turned out okay, my family could at least identify it was our tree lmao 🌳
I seldom comment videos, but you are amazing!!!
You are a true artist
Nice tree... Good instructions... Tedious, but simple design... Overall great video...
will you do more on the marks you are doing to make the texture of the leaves
Black and white photo of an actual tree would have been less painful. Ten out of ten for determination though. Respect.
This was really helpful. Thanks
Thank you for this. I can draw leafless trees, but I could never get leaves right. This helped me a lot
Thanks!

How do you do the strokes for the leaves? I cannot get this right.
*Says you'll need something other than a standard HB pencil*
guess i'll die
You can use a standard pencil and just change the pressure of your hand
Would you like to try one of our Look6 sketching lights, to draw trees outside in moonlight?
