Meat and Potato Pie | Hollands Meat Pie Review

  • Meat and Potato Pies are quite traditional in Northern England, and especially in Lancashire. While it wouldn't pass muster with the clean/healthy eating brigade, a meat and potato pie is perfect comfort food on a cold winter evening. One legendary brand of Potato and Meat Pies is Hollands Pies. Hollands have made pies in Lancashire since 1851, and their pies are sold in chip shops and at football matches across the North of England. In this video, I do a quick taste test of a Holland's Pie, and then I make my own meat and potato pie from scratch. It's quite easy and utterly delicious.

Nice guys. You took me back to my mother's kitchen where we as kids were watching our mum backing apple pie and meat pies the same way you were doing. Once in a while, she allowed us to bake our own apple pie. The warning "put your pinafore on first" still sounds across the ages. For you maybe not so extraordinary, but now I am a 69-year-old Dutchman who still bakes pies like my (English) mother taught me and I love to see my kids and grandchildren enjoy them.

When I were a lad in the 60's I did my time as a Butcher and we made 'Hand Raised' Pork Pie's. The hot water pastry
was weighed out but always left overnight and moulded nicely around the 'Doofa' (If there is a proper name for the
wooden former we used I never knew; it nor did my Boss who had used one all his life!) Needless to say the pies were
delicious. Now; after many years, I am inspired to put on my 'pie head' and have a bash at baking again. Thanks Matey.

Eating a Holland's meat and potato pie..now called a potato and meat pie, it takes me back 33 years ago when I lived "up north". Nothing beats it then, and now. Drowned in Lea and Perrin's sauce, it's my ultimate comfort blanket 👍👍😃

    Great video as usual.
I grew up on this stuff coming from Darwen. Every other Sunday and bonfire night we always had this but a huge one with a crust on top, raw onions that had been soaked in a bucket for a couple of days in vinegar, and of course home made mushy peas.

Hollands pies used to be gray inside. As a kid in Swinton in the 60's I used to go to the "chippy" once in a while for our dinner. I had to get chips and peas at the "chippy" then go 2 doors down to the bakery that made "real" meat and potato pies because the "chippy" only had Hollands pies.

When I was in Stoke on Trent where I was born...my parents and I lived at Trentham and used to go to Longton Market to buy meat and potato pies...best I have ever had and we bought them regularly. We moved to Cornwall in 1969 and bought some Cornish pasties...Oh my, were they delicious or what!!!😋😋 Your pies look delicious, now they are definitely a beautiful pie... remind me of pasties a little but no swede in them but could make them into pasty pies adding swede..yaay!!! Thanks for sharing your lovely video and your wife is lovely xxx

When I was a commis waiter at the Granby Hotel in Harrogate, Mr Walter Holland of pie fame used to come to dinner in the grill room. He was a nice man. When our Catholic seminary needed re-roofing he gave a generous donation. I don't think he was a Catholic either.

Thanks for making the Meat and Potato Pies, they're on next week's menu. Ah! good old mushy peas, I remember my Grandmar, Mam and Mother-in-Law soaking the dried marrowfat peas overnight, along with the tablet included in the packet, before cooking. A lot of messing about granted, but what a taste, yummy!

Yes it is a secret cult across the globe. Fridge worship is carried out by all cultures, small food tokens left until stale or moldy best in twee little dishes then thrown away. I have seen this strange practice throughout decades with chants such as 'save for later' or I'll make soup this weekend. I didnt know it had reached northern england but sure enough fridge worship knows no boundaries. How do we stamp it out!!

As a Lancashire lad (living in NZ for past 45 years) Hollands pies are still in my memory.I think they included onions which were always a bit undercooked and bitter. However, NZ mass produced pies are totally crap. Best option here is a bakery shop (usually owned by Cambodians) . They do what is called Potato Top, which is really cottage pie.

The Hollands pie van used to arrive around 8am at my Fathers chippy in the 60's. Trays up on trays of Meat and Potato pies, Meat pies, Cheese and onion pies and Steak and Kidney puddings. The biggest difference I instantly noticed on a recent trial is that everything has been ground up. I couldn't find an onion or a piece of potato. The Cheese an onion had a filling of yellow paint.
To add to it all the jar of piccalilli I bought to go with them, had also been chopped up.
Spot on with the milk wash, it was probably Sterilized milk well into the 70's.

Holland’s are handy to have in the freezer, often on offer for hardly anything. The filling is minimal but good for an easy quick meal with some mash, veg and gravy.

Your wife is so lucky to have a husband that cooks and also such tasty meals that you prepare.

When I was young my neighbour worked at said pie factory and the meat for those pies was Scottish beef steak. The potatoes were mostly locally grown. The pies were incredibly good back then. No wonder I’m now a vegan looking at those slop filled pastry things.

Last I heard (I'm a Lancashire lad) the original owners of Hollands sold out to a company of Asian origin. their products, in my personal opinion, have gone steadly downhill ever since.

The pie looks good, the chatting about Discworld was even better.

I'm surprised how many Pratchett fans have come out of the woodwork. Just don't call me Dibbler!

Do you do requests Keith? I love cheese & onion pie.
Seen a few versions over the years, if you do a good one on your channel I'll jolly well become a patron.
    Cheers mucker!

I've done minced beef & cheese: www.keefcooks.com/minced-beef-and-cheese-australian-pie/ and I thought I'd done cheese and onion pasty, but it seems I'm wrong. I used to do cheese onion & potato because without the spuds there wasn't much bulk to the filling.
