Love the tips about the cable housing cutting, repairing the saddles, old tubes being uses for the shifters, and much more! What a banger this vid.
Thanks man glad you found the tips helpful!! Cheers !
I could watch these videos all day. Love the attention to detail on everything including noodle selection. Glad I stayed till the end as I was almost about to hit buy on those bars. lol
Cheers man I appreciate that!! Hahah yeah I guess they had the cross bar on there for a reason 😂😂😂
Always providing great commentary as you build.
Cheers man ! Hopefully there is some useful tips in there!
Great job Gary, love the easy going narration as you work. I’m working on an old Mongoose Hilltopper and did the same removing paint from rear triangle, may coat similarly to how you did it. I’ve also used a non-narrow wide chainring on a Kona 1x rebuild and it still works great. Do your thing with the parts you have. Keep up the great work man!
Cheers man I am glad you like the voice over haha ! Oooo that sounds like a cool bike, will do up nicely. Yep always just use what I can to save some $$$ & for the earth. Thanks man will do my best! 🙏
Nice job!! That's a full restoration. It's so satisfying watching the video comented with your voice like that. You had a nice bike at the end, so beautiful and I'm sure you can ride it pretty smoothly! Congrats, your videos are so useful to me ;)
Thanks Ivan I appreciate that ! I definitely have some ppl that don’t like my voice but I can’t really change it 😂😂😂 glad you enjoyed it cheers!
Thanks for all your help bro. Got my first build broken down and ready to do it.
Hell ya dude no worries glad it’s helpful! Good luck with your build 😊
Best 59mins of my life. Thank you!
Hahah thank you my dude, I am honored!!
Excellent tips. Thanks Gary for a really good video.
No worries man I’m glad you liked it! Cheers !
Cleaning is the best bit, so satisfying.
Hell ya dude! I think you either like it or don’t haha!! But yeah I find it meditative sometimes 👍
Great job, The restoration come out good.
Thx homie i appreciate that!
I just realized I spend one hour watching this video 😅 this will definitely help me with my project 👍👍
Hahah awesome dude ! Hope your project goes well cheers !
Looks awesome!! Great job🤗
Cheers man i appreciate that !! 😊
Always learn something watching your videos. Thanks
no worries i'm glad! cheers
the aluminum tubing expands and contracts inside the steel lugs and cracks the paint. no biggie. great video bro.
Ahhh I see! Thanks for the info appreciate it , cheers brother!
That bottom bracket spring tool is a life saver man, nice one!
Hell ya ! Cheers mate
Exceptional build, like the raw rear triangle, looks cool with the forks
Cheers man ! I liked how the raw turned out too!
I just love these bike builds with the forgeten bikes bike you csn have fun on and not be afraid of scratching it I've just bought a Zooz urban ultralight 750 but I still love to ride my Gary Fisher big sur mountain bike build it has got a mid-drive motor in it and I love riding I will never get rid of that bike it means so much to me 👍🏾🙏
cheers man i appreciate that. sounds like a fun bike man!! enjoyy 😊
That rear triangle paint strip worked out well with the front fork. Nice work buddy
Thanks man ! I appreciate it, I liked how it turned out too 👍 cheers
epic build as always man
Cheers brother i appreciate that ! ✌️
Hi..Gary. .just finished watching your video and it was very satisfying seeing you build a much better bike than the original. ..The xt / xtr V brakes were a game changer in the day as were the Tioga nobby ...The un 72 BB was an upgrade to ,being lighter than standard. ...Nice retro bike but watch out for those pedals...Thanks for sharing 👍
Cheers Steve i appreciate that. Nice info about the components! I didn’t even know that the bb was an upgrade - that’s why it spun so well haha! Def will be careful with the shinners 😂
You would love Portland Oregon, there's all kinds of good bikes around
cheers would love to visit one day!! looks like theres a good bike community over there!
So sick! I gotta build me one of those. I love the look!
Cheers man I appreciate that! And good fun too !
Love the channel! Very interesting stuff!
Thx Ivan I appreciate that!
Sweet bike. Nice job.
thank you dude i appreciate that!
My method for stripping paint off a steel or aluminum frame set is a real time saver: professional glass blasting. Then it can be finished with wet paint or powder coat. Yeah, powder coat is almost sacrilegious, and I'd never use it a valuable frame, but it has the advantage of being super durable, and on a bike that's not for resale or some sort of museum piece, it can be the way to go. In any case, professional glass blasting isn't cheap, but neither is my time.
Nice man thanks for the tip! Cheers
looks amazing sir
Thank you sir i appreciate that !
Sick pedals ..nice bike
Thx homie! Pedals go hard
The finished product doesn't do all of your hard work justice. All that time, effort and skill you proved you've got and the bike looks "just ok". Yeah I get the whole "Sleeper project" vibe , but your work deserves more.
Hahah cheers man! I’m stoked with how the bike looks, but yeah beauty is in the eye of the beholder !
Those xt v brakes are getting very hard to find and can be extortionate. Since you have a steel/aluminium frame on which the paint work was really beat up I would have had the whole thing grit blasted clean and then powder coated. You can get that shimmery colour back by having it coated silver first then re coated with a translucent blue/green. They come out really nice. Done it once on a Gary fisher full suspension frame and my guy in palm city, Florida charged me $75 for the blasting and powder coating. It was so worth it.
True true! Having it blasted and repainted would have been way easier !
I just picked up a new to me giant. Bike is from the late 90s early 00s, just based off if the rubber flaking. But I plan on turning it to a nice every day bike.
That’s good, I’ve had worked on a few giants and they are super solid!
Teflon lube for shifter cables is an industry secret.
Ayyy nice ! 👍
if you have a wire wheel you can go over the areas you want to strip, that will help the stripper work much better being able to penetrate easier
Oh that’s a great idea 🙏
@@garysprojects iv also seen ppl cover it with plastic
Give it a lot of jumps and wheelies😎cheers, Achim
Btw: the bb tool is awesome…looking forward getting my own one!
Will do thanks homie!! Yesss bb tool is very handy ! 😊
@@garysprojects just ordered the bb tool🥳cheers mate
@@hookerjl1 ayyy nice one man it will come in handy!
I am surprised no cable stop ends for the frame or levers? XT and XTr V brakes are game changer and a must on any Vintage. Very nice job on video and build.
Ahh haha yes good eye I rarely use them in my builds since I don’t have them, just use straight cable, haven’t noticed any major issues yet. Cheers man the upgrades def help! appreciate the kind words thank you! 😊
My shins hurt just by looking at those pedals
They are ready to eat your shins 🦈
The rust converter will stop working properly if you contaminate the bottle with a dirty brush. I always try to pour a little out into a cup and brush from that. Then discard any excess. It's always a bummer to toss any because it's expensive.
Oh dang good to know thanks for that !
Nice job, I like the look of the finished project. One small thing, I wonder whether evapo-rust does anything on aluminium though? :-)
Cheers man i appreciate that!! Haha ya aluminum doesn’t rust usually so I’m not sure 😂. Evaporust is pretty much safe on everything so I just chuck it in !
You could try to find the overlap with a magnet.
Ooo that’s a good idea cheers
Have you tried using a ice cube to smooth the kintsgu glue? It works really wel for smoothing shoe goo (glue for fixing skate shoes).
I actually haven’t tried! Yep I’ve done the ice on shoe goo too! 👍
amazing build. Looks like a big wheel bmx but hell lot classy. How the eff you get all these bikes to be begin with?
Hahha cheers man I just buy them off fb marketplace
Nice...!
Cheers man!
Aluminum foil and wd40 for rust is the best 👌 👍
Cheers man !
Whats the shifter? I'm looking for a affordable friction shifter, possibly non-indexed. Thanks!
Hi it’s a just a real low end shimano one, came off another bike project
Rob Warner Basejump pedals. Your shins will not be forgiven.
Hahahhaa true thar
Nice, I haven't ever seen one of those frames. I did notice you put the Tioga DH tyres on the wrong ends ;)
Hahah cheers ! What does that mean ?
@@garysprojects lol you put the front tyre on the back and the rear on the front :D
@@ADVtheMISSIONARY haha really! I thought they were the same lol
@@garysprojects yeah its an easy mistake to make, the rear has the larger center knobbs
@@ADVtheMISSIONARY wow good know haha! cheers!
super !!!
Thx man!!
hi gary! I'm assuming you haven't installed neither a narrow wide or clutch derailleur because it is meant as a city bike, am I right? could there be any issues for a gravel use?
hi! ya no clutch derailleur on here and had no problems. if just using for normal commuting/gravel , chances of dropping is very slim
I really hope WD40 is seriously considering sponsoring your channel
Hahah cheers man! Do they even sponsor people??
The headset isn't really sealed. The plastic rings on both ends can be pushed out with a knife. My aheadset lost all the grease and destroyed itself, only learned that it can be taken apart after I replaced it with a new headset.
True that, I think they just use that term to differentiate them from loose and caged bearings types. Good to know either way! Cheers
when i was younger i saw a kid crash and stab himself in the gut with the end of his handlebars and basically take a core sample of his toros because he wasn't running any kind of bar ends. you should cap your bars before you core sample your guts.
Yesss this bike has different bars now and running bar ends 👍
Damn, I can't decide which handlebar to put on my bike. from a motorcycle or from BMX????
Hahah yea hard to decide!!
I'm sure I've got some handlebars like that did the come with a brace on them because I took off my brace aswell 🤣😂👍🏾
hahah hopefully yours hasnt bent yet !
All those bikes are going to go alot further with a Bafang bbso2 & battery....lets see what you can do Gary with a 750w motor between the pedals..?
Hahah true I’ve actually been waiting to do a ebike for a while, once I find a cheap kit I’ll be in it
Look forward to seeing that Gary. ...lots of potential with the Bafang motor. ...Some of those utube videos of the bbso2 make the average ebike from the bike shop look pretty slow not mention expensive. ...@ least the bafang can be retro fitted to some of the old classic 90s bikes because theres plenty of room for the battery. ...
"For Sporting"
Hahah definitely
Don't grease jockey wheels 37:10
I just gave it a thin coat and wiped it off to protect from rust !
Why not? I have seen a lot of mechanics do it. There is a specific grease for derailleurs too. And some jockey wheels even have bearings in them
So your monster thighs are what make this build a "sleeper?" 😆
Hahahahha definitely
The bars are poor quality, Ive also bent them right away. Dangerous stuff...
Dude imagine if you bought them for an actual motorbike , crazy
Great video really enjoyed it just too bad you're not wearing a helmet.
Cheers homie i appreciate that!!
I hope you didnt pay too much for that
Why?
Gran trabajo,pero habla demasiado 🤦🏻♂️
Cheers man! you can always turn the sound off 😂
It was horrible!🤫
😂😂😂
Love these videos! 2 things I saw lately, cut housing with some excess cable poking out the end, it'll help with the crushing, also @bkefrmr uses hair spray and it works good for putting on grips
Thanks mate that’s a good tip regarding the cable I have to try that ! I don’t like to use hair spray because it makes messy for the person if they ever want to change grips ! Cheers
