I am not in med school and I have 0 interest in going to med school. Not even sure how i found your channel because I'm not even in the medical field. However, your videos are very helpful for just life in general. It's interesting to know these things because I can name 2 bad habits that I NEED to stop. Thanks.

Great video, I really need to see this. Just left Chem class after failing a test that I should have passed. I have a bad habit of cramming and waiting to the last minute to study. Failing this test has me feeling like giving up all together because I am a nurse and it would be much easier to just become a nurse practitioner, but my end goal is to become a doctor. So I will seek out tutoring and try to form better study habits instead because I can’t imagine going through life without achieving this huge goal.

THIS OPENED MY EYES!! THANK YOU SO MUCH DR. Parker. You have no idea how important and valuable your videos are and I have no way to express my gratitude. I'm a senior in high school right now and I now understand why I have bad habits, especially when studying. It's because I've trained my brain to cram and to ignore problems/deadlines. Starting today, I will begin to "re-wire" my brain to study more effectively and to not run away from challenges. Thank you, you truly deserve millions of subs so you can reach a larger audience because I know for a fact that you will help inspire and guide many students to become the best they can be. Please continue the great work and know that you are deeply appreciated.

49 and need to retrain my brain in order to FINALLY finish the degree I started multiple lifetimes ago. Once upon a time I was an Honors College Pre-med Biology major. I didn't have the life skills and habits necessary, so I burned out and gave up. At 40 I became a Surgical Tech. Now, I really want to finish my BS. It's going to be one heck of a challenge, but sometimes you just have to find a way.

I just tapped into "training my brain" to study this past semester... I'm a first year post-bacc student and learned this pretty late after basically sucking in undergrad and being a C student who loved my college life and football season way more than actual class..
Folks, training your brain is legit. I've wanted to take a nap so bad after a long day of work, class, and the gym but instead, I'm laying in my bed staring at the fucking ceiling for an hour reciting chem formulas and reworking homework problems in my head to the point I just get up and start reading. it's actually annoying honestly but I just made the best grades since I was taking dumb electives in undergrad. thanks for this vid bc I totally can attest that this is real and works..
Gen Surg. Topics I'd like to know more about:
Acute Care vs. Trauma .. (if you don't have one already)
The choice to choose a subspecialty or is it necessary in Gen Surg.
Does it bother you to put off starting a family and pursuing your medical career first or NAH lol

Thanks regarding the brain and relationship with habit concept.
I have FEW QUESTIONS listed below.
I am incoming MS1 and so far my goal is to go GS.
I have quick Questions about General Surgery:
    Q) Do you feel like you get bored now or will get bored in the future, as similar and very limited cases come more often?
    Q) How much control do you have on your work hours? Can you decrease the workload if you wanted and vice versa?
    Q) What is your perspective as a GS in the future? How is it going to change? Different factors that are affect GS today and in future.
Just wanted to get your perspective on these questions.

Oh my god, this video makes SO much sense! I was always smart in high school so I never studied because I just naturally was able to get okay grades. One day I was thinking like “Imagine how smart I would be if I ACTUALLY studied, I could probably get close to a 4.0...” So I’ve made it my goal to study each subject (math, biology, etc.) at least a little bit everyday, and its much more effective than trying to cram everything!

This is an excellent point. As a former med school student, its incredibly important to understand before you go to med school that you have the mentality and approach of needing to constantly study otherwise you will be completely thrown off by your pre-concieved expectations of what med school is like. Personally, I didn't really understand what I was getting into with medicine, and when I kind of realized that I would need to constantly study, do questions, etc not only in med school but the rest of my practicing future as a doctor I realized the profession was not for me and I left school. Its very important to know what you're getting into with medicine, otherwise you will be very burned out and drained by the training and expectations of the field

I'm currently staying home, took one year between highschool and medschool to study for the admission exam. In this year I decided to train my brain exactly like you said, making study a habit, and it works. Been doing it for 3 months now, and I just feel the urge to study after the pattern I trained myself on. It's amazing, our brains are amazing, and I can't wait to get into medschool! Thanks for the great videos, doing a great job.

What do you do if you didn't "train" yourself during the younger years like high school and middle school? How to you fix that (or untrain the bad habits)? Like how to you force yourself so that you are making progress and enjoy studying; not just passively learning and wasting time? Lastly, how do you reach that state you described where you are "irritated" when you don't study? Thanks! love your channel btw.

In a lot of self help books they talk about "reprogramming your subconscious mind" which is basically changing the beliefs you have about your abilities, health, life, relationships etc. in order to lead a better life. That's actually something I was trying to do but repetition is key. So repeating the new beliefs/thought patterns may take some time. Thank you for great content!

See i am going to put it straight:
    THOUGHT, WORDS, BELIEF, ACTION ,RESULT.
    That's all what it takes.

Loved the video. Motivated to train my brain now. Topic: What is your opinion of the role of the robot (da Vinci) in general surgery? What technology is transforming surgery?

Well you happen say, exactly what I needed to hear today and yes the "untrain the brain pathways" totally makes sense. Thanks for the philosophy talk:)

This was a really good video! Thanks! I think place cells are an integral part of training your brain to win. I wonder if Tom Brady would have the same winning streak if asked to play the same game, but in a totally different setting and with different visual cues? Place cells are involved in forming a cognitive map of your environment and they’re direction specific- so if you’re walking from your bed to the bathroom a place cell will fire at a specific location in your environment, but won’t fire at that place if you’re walking from the bathroom to your bed. I’m currently studying for the mcat and something I do repetitively is run on the same path around the same time every other day. I was studying in the stacks at the NYU library and have literally been killing it with productivity, but I recently switched to the stacks at this law school closer to my house. The first day I went, I was exhausted and wasn’t as focused and I fucked off (despite this super productive streak when I was able to still be productive on days when I hadn’t had enough sleep). I always like to sit in the same spot so I kept going back to that first spot at the law school and every day I would every day I wasn’t focused for the first couple of hours. But yesterday my spot was taken so I sat somewhere else. I was both well rested and well caffeinated and sitting in the new spot, I had an incredibly productive study sesh. Last example- when a person becomes addicted to drugs and are able to tolerate higher doses, but then takes that same dose in a different location, they can actually overdose (my dev psych prof said that was likely why Whitney Houston died in that hotel room). Take away: I think specific cues in your environment are crucial to making / breaking a habit and I think it’s because of place cells in the hippocampus!

Yes! The brain training idea is so awesome! I never really put it into words, but i'm in my 3rd year of med school and have felt different about studying recently (I used to suck and procrastinate)... and when you said that it clicked, I think I finally trained my brain! About fucking time. SECOND THING. Idk if this would be a good topic for the general public, but i'm a girl and reallyyy want to be a peds CT surgeon. Lots of ppl tell me that being a girl in the field is hard bc of on-call schedule and general lifestyle and surgical atmosphere. Should I just go for it? I literally can't decide and need to start residency applications in the next few months... Thanks Dr. Buck I love all your videos!!!!

Can you do a video on Angelman’s Syndrome? My baby cousin was just diagnosed. It would be awesome if someone like you could touch on this subject to bring awareness to it and get more people talking about it and find a cure. As always, your videos are awesome!

Good video doc. Definitely, do practice questions every day. Training my brain to take the exams. So then during the exam my brain doesn't have to work hard to find the correct answer and it can be less fatigued.
