Is Girls Und Panzer Realistic? Does it Matter?

- Ever since Girls Und Panzer first debuted over a decade ago, there have been many discussions and debates regarding the "realism" with which its titular tanks are portrayed. Thanks jumping? Drifting?
As it turns out, Girls Und Panzer might be a more realistic portrayal of tanks and tank combat than you think, while balancing that alongside making sure the battles are fun and exciting.

I think Girls Und Panzer does a perfect job of balancing Realism and fiction one never overpowers the other
There's a reason why Girls Und Panzer is my favorite tank show. It's goofy and entertaining while respecting history.
Respect history? Are you serious? Have you ever held a history book in your hand? I don't tell anyone whether they should like the series or not, it's not my job, but please don't talk about respecting history or realism. There is nothing realistic about the series except the fact that they use real tanks and not fictional transformers type stuff.
@@stiefelriemen632 I don't think you've watched it, because if you did, you'd know well the amount of historical references and tiny details in the movie and series.
The animators referenced old movies such as Kelly's heroes on a TV frame for frame. Later, the Rabbit team mimick the Kelly move in a fight. They made countless references to historical battles and lesser known facts. The various schools are all positive stereotypes of the countries they present which is entirely done in good faith.
Is that not respecting history?
There's also a spinoff series where the animators go into depth on the vehicles presented in the main series and movie one by one talking about interesting facts, their contribution, their design, and much more.
Chieftain was hands on during this anime. That man knows more than you and I ever will, so to call the show disrespectful to history is a jab at Chieftain who does history talks for military museums. Chieftain is employed by museums to teach history. Would you really say you know better than him?
@@stiefelriemen632maybe you should watch it before saying all this lol, and if you still saying all that after watching the anime maybe you are not really know about history
@@stiefelriemen632 Actually there's a lot of references to history, character birthdays, character design, and most of all, there is a lot of references to actual battles (Pravda vs Oorai, which was a massive allegory to Stalingrad). Does the show take liberties? Yes. Extremely. (I'M LOOKING AT YOU. CHURCHILL AND CRUSADER!), but that's the price you pay for making stuff appeal to a wider audience. Please WATCH the anime FIRST.
@@panzerlite8108 if you really think so, you're just proving how uneducated you are
"Tanks can't jump or drift!"
Slavs and Scandinavian: Observe
There's a video of a Abrams drifting too, albeit on icy surface
I think those detractors who love to highlight the perceived 'unreality' of Girls und Panzer should take time to read J.R.R.Tolkien's 1939 essay 'On Fairy Stories,' in which he discusses, amongst other subjects, the theme of 'consistency within reality.' In essence, it's about fantasy world building and populating that world with peoples, their customs, history, lore and technology etc. that are entirely consistent with that reality. Girls und Panzer achieves this perfectly and never once does it step outside the constraints of its own 'reality.'
Exactly! That's what a lot of people seem to mix up. They'll defend a show with a inconsistent reality by saying "its fiction, doesn't have to be realistic." while criticizing internally consistent series by saying "it is unrealistic."
@@neurofiedyamato8763 they sounded like the same people who criticize games like Ace Combat for not being realistic then proceed to play MW2019 and praising how "realistic" that game is, despite the fact that you can regenerate health like Wolverine, run while holding an LMG in one hand, or they proceeded to play RDR2 and praising how that game is also "realistic", even if you can heal your gunshots by eating a can of beans, and that your horse can carry an entire arsenal of guns
Very good analysis.
Is it taking liberties? Yes. Is it too bonkers? No as much as you'd think. Is it awesome. ABSOLUTELY.
Also, I noticed that despite not trying to be historically accurate all the time, sometimes they make somewhat plausible battles like T-34s vs tigers and the 34s closing the gap. The Pershing’s in the urban environment, a famous tank duel took place in a city with a Pershing killing the panther. I don’t watch the show although I might but I have seen these in clips. It is honestly amazing utilization of these machines into a show everyone likes. Tank nerds love it because of realistic tank models, anime weebs love it because anime, and normal people just like seeing a cool show where tanks beat the ever loving shit out of each other in fun action packed battles while also having a nice little story behinds it.
Is Girls und Panzer realistic? Yes and no. The tanks are too fast, none break down during battle compared to their historical counterparts, and tanks take more damage compared to how they normally would. But all the unrealistic stuff is more nitpicks and stuff one can look past for the sake of entertainment.
The good parts of the series, and a huge reason why I love it so much, is how it's goofy, adorable, and entertaining while also being so incredibly realistic. The series knows and respects history while also being entertaining at the same time.
That's the beauty of Girls und Panzer and a huge reason why we love it so much. It's just that great of an anime, for its entertainment value and its adherence to realism.
So thanks for another amazing analysis video, and I hope to catch you this Saturday for your next Dream Tank Match Stream!
I guess the tanks take more damage than real world counterparts because of that "Carbon Coating", a.k.a. Plot Armor. Unrealistic in that the girls inside the tanks getting blasted and thrown up in the air would die of concussions (they don't even wear helmets!).
the battle in der film was great and IMO it only got surpassed by the jungle battle against chi-ha-tan, that whole battle was incredible, especially considering the character advancement for chi-ha-than between the series and das finale
also your brother's comment about the automotive club forgot to include the girls installed an actual turbo button in their tank that gives them 5 seconds of like 200kph
Girls und Panzer is internally consistent and is realistic in areas that truly matter while not afraid to do something crazy to make it more fun.
Tanks jumping and drifting do in fact happen, not as exaggerated as in the anime but people dismissing these in a blanket statement is just wrong. Especially with steel tracks, they slide around on paved surfaces, and ofc ice and wet surfaces too. And plenty of tank jumps as long you are fast enough, which most WW2 tanks were; although once again GuP extend the jump distance by quite a bit. Speed is speed, and acceleration of gravity is the same regardless if you are a tank or not. A 50kmh tank is going to make the same jump a 50kmh car would.
The tanks are often faster than IRL though, or at least slower tanks have their speed normalized to match the rest. Breakdowns do happen but rarely and usually recovered much quicker than IRL. The guns often penetrate less than they do IRL. A lot of hits on both friend and foe often bounce when realistically, would have gone through several times that distance. Conversely, the transfer of momentum is ridiculous with tanks sent flying from impacts.
The "police chase" scenes are pretty unrealistic tactics but a lot of other very real ones too. Hull downs, reverse slope defense, encirclement, ambushes, Double envelopment, feints, hit and run, mobile defense, etc. etc. And its all employed in a very intelligent way that makes sense in the context of the match. Its a lot better tactics than most "tactician/strategists" animes.
6:38 It would have taken a KV-2 about 20 seconds to load a shell, in Girls Und Panzer it took them a few seconds
Yeah, and the turret rotation on Panthers and Tigers (and reload speed) would be absolute dog shit.
i just remember that rabbit team has watched a movie about real tank in war, so taking form this fact, i think the tanks used in the tournament aren't the same tanks used in real war, it should have been specially made for sports(senshado), that will explain what they mean about the safety aspect, and also why they can let high school girls ride it...
It feels like it has some of those saturday cartoon. Crazy bonking and hijinks.
Technically the Porsche Tiger has a petrol electric drive. Meaning tracks are moved forward by electric motors. So theoretically you can up the power by just using sth like batteries or a big super capacitor.
I think the new hybrid tanks or the new American standard engine pack for armored vehicles even has a power boost option :)
Technically yes but capacitors won't last even a second, they are too short in duration. You need time to accelerate and given its mass, not exactly realistic method with current technology. Honestly, using methanol injection as did historical WW2 aircraft's WEP would be more reasonable. The Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle prototype also used this method for WEP.
Also I think there's only one Hybrid tank atm, the AbramsX and its a single prototype that is unlikely to be adopted. The army want hybrid JLTVs though I don't remember if the prototype has been completed yet.
The main advantage of hybrid is fuel efficiency and silent drive rather than more easily boost speed. Modern MBTs are already approaching the speed limit practical for combat without some major redesign of the crew compartment. Keep in mind tanks don't primarily drive on roads after all. When off-roading at highspeed, you'll start to want something like a fighter cockpit or a race car seat to secure the crew
But does the new American standard engine pack have a VTOL option?
Also, and a theory, the more modern equipment in the creation might include improved engine and transmissions.
Edit: Oh wait. I just had to wait 2 second to hear what I just said.
considering they had The Chieftain (nicolas moran) involved as a consultant for the movie i'd rate the realism pretty high... bar the matillda 2 drifting... but other than that... i don't care I love the show
The thing is that vast majority of exaggeration is done off the back of the tank's real life capabilities. Such as the speed of the BT and the Crusader
The Duck team putting out their tank's fire with a fire extinguisher while all four are inside their tank AND the hatches are closed are HIGHLY unrealistic. They'd suffocate very quickly irl.
That is the only demerit I'd offer the show.
總結,畢竟是動漫嘛,沒必要追求真實,那是少女與戰車呢,他在真實和不真實之間保持一個微妙的關係
Could you do video on GuP music composition? Like how its made and how it effects the viewers watching? You already mentioned the music when Pravda sacrificed them self for Katyusha so it would be great continuation on how Great music in GuP is.
Accurate depiction of tanks...with the glaring exception when it comes to tank speeds.

bro ahh.. just.. thank you
many people and videos provoke me about this and you just swabbed them
and.. a salute for your brother🫡
"We use real shells in matches but they're used with an emphasis on the participants safety"
I never really understood this debate, as someone new to tanks, seeing the show is animated I already suspend my disbelief for it.
Another series I see this kind of debate in is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, where the characters have super natural abilities, but the writer still explains them in a scientific manner.
It follows similar principles of fantasy and comedy, in that while it does mostly seem like a contemporary setting, it runs in a universe that bears it's own logic, and that includes things that seem unrealistic but are clearly made to entertain the viewer. Yes the tanks move fast, but that's almost negligible in significance compared to the insane stunts that often befall tanks after getting hit, tumbling in a fashion that would kill and a little flag popping perfectly vertically up as if with foresight.
For the less flexible mind, this would bother them, but I take it as an obvious joke. The tank is being sent tumbling almost as if it were a character unto itself rather than a machine with squishy humans inside, and the flag's function being so simple and it's execution often seeming impossibly complex is a downright comedic contrast, and both of these elements serve to remind the viewer not to take things so seriously and be along for the ride.
m24 climbing a roller coaster: this is realistic heck yeah!
There's a joke about the Flying Christie in there somewhere.
Girls und panzer: the only show where you can Tokyo drift a tank
It doesn't matter at all.
Girls unpanzers is literally tank Porn. For people who want to see tanks pushed to the absolute maximum possible limit. With the added bonus of knowing that we'll never have a sport like tankery. But knowing we would sign up in a heartbeat if it was announced...
7:10 Sounds like a skill issue with your brother. 😂
Well, I'm pretty sure he felt some serious schadenfreude from Jagdpanther-chan's "Truth in Television" moment. "HEY! We just fixed that, and our tracks are really heavy!"
Short answer no
long answer nooooooooooooooo
What annoys me about people who nitpick things like the speed of the tanks, they somehow give the giant city sized aircraft carriers the schools are on a complete pass.
So apparently somethings are perfectly fine, but the location of a weld on a Lee is a big no no.
There's a reason why every tank enthusiast and military vehicle nut who has watched the show likes it lol
"No one ever gets hurt in tankery". Yeah, but when a tank gets in a crash that would kill anyone IRL no matter what type of ammunition used and no one bats an eye, then whatever goes.
The only time a potential injury was mentioned was in the original anime where Miho saves another tank's crew from drowning. And another brief mention of shells whizzing by Miho's head.
If you want accuracy watch a documentary, not an anime. :D
