- AWESOME FPV FLIGHT | Onboard REALTIME Telemetry Cockpit Display | DJI FPV RC Freewing Avanti EDF JET
We have been a long time fan of the Freewing 80mm EDF Avanti as an aerobatic sport jet and it was about time we converted it to head tracked DJI FPV. We have designed our own smooth moving pan/tilt mechanism with a bearing and two servos that moves as the pilot on the ground moves his head. We use the FatShark External Head Tracker module but are also close to having our own 'Essential RC' head tracker. The flight footage is from 2 flights one of which was flying with Jason 8S powered Avanti which was difficult to keep up with. In future we'll have the same setup so can fly closer !
In this video we also tested out the RCGauges realtime telemetry display. It is available in either standalone or iNav versions. We purchased and tried out the standalone 2 inch version. We will also try it in other projects especially in cockpits that can provide a lot more shade. Look on www.RCGauges.com for more information.
Note that to reduce the unfortunate flicker effect with the DJI FPV camera a Caddx 14MM ND8 filter should be used. This happens because of the mismatch in frame rate/frequency between the camera (60 fps) and the OLED (90 hertz). An ND filter on the camera forces the automatic shutter speed to be longer duration and this prevents most of the flickering. For the DJI FPV camera to have best focus the LED display needs to be 10cm to 12cm away. Ensure this can be accommodated in your cockpit layout. If not, then consider the smaller LED display sold by RCGauges.COM
The Essential RC Pan Tilt mechanism can be purchased here. Please state what RC aircraft you intend to install it in so we can advise best version: www.ebay.co.uk/usr/essentialrc

I really like the design in your videos but the ebay link is a different design?
@@afterburnerrc6333 If you buy one then add a note to the transaction saying what aircraft it is going in and Jason will print the correct one for that aircraft.
Hi I've ordered the dji pan only gimbal from you.. It says dispatched.... But not delivered... Messaged you twice on ebay.. Please get back to me thanks
Whoa... Almost blacked out pulling those "8 to 10" G forces... I'd say it was a successful flight...
OK. That is insane. Mega cool.
Just sick!
Now THAT is cool!
Awesome video I love the cockpit gauges!
Very cool!!!
素晴らしい映像ですね、まるで自分が空を飛んでる様ですね。
That looks Awesome 👍
That is something else!! :-)
Really cool.
That’s brilliant Dom, loved when you got closer to the panel. Was like being on a rollercoaster ride 👍🏻
For you and me both buddy!
You going to the club Sunday? I could come down. Give you a ride on the FPV Avanti.
Nice setup
That was awesome.👍
Yeah...I'm still fizzing from the experience. Just sooo good.
Love that
Me too! Just A-MA-ZING flying FPV jets like this. I'll be doing this with my turbine powered Avanti next !
The black paint over the white foam was a must. excellent paint mod.
Recommendation from someone that commented on the first video. Worked well.
Yes, much better visibility on the in camera gauges. I was inspired on this topic early on when a guy let me fly a slow FPV model. He had a tiny ribbon and a small ball compass in the view. It made me very interested in what kinds of "steam" gauges could be easily made. Thus why your video caught my interest. I think the camera would be improved if were not swinging off center left to right as much. More overtop of the spline would keep gauges in view through more degrees of head yaw. I am sure you don't need to look at them anyway. Looks like great fun. Liked.
Great expending your technology... I have a few hrs in tactical Jets USMC...it's going to be hard but someone needs to try to fly gauge IFR or VFR... a good Copilot would really help...well done Captain...
Pitlab osd night ils landings looks like fun

This is another level 😂
Hmmm...we've still got a few more levels above this to try 😊
wow,that's cool,great video
Thank you 🤗
Wow
Tech is coming on so fast these days
Build a black shroud around the monitor extending as close the camera as possible (without getting in the way of movement) and it will make a huge difference in the visibility of the display.
Nice video
Thanks
OSD seems more practical after seeing this
Agree. It was a fun thing to try but I've moved onto to using Matek flight controllers and OSD. Got all that in a turbine jet that will fly soon.
It doesn't make sense to have the camera that far out in front of the pivot point. But this looks great!
excellent 👍👍love the instrument panel
Hmmm. No good in bright sun light TBH
@@EssentialRC ahh that would be a problem . a little off topic ,what make is your head tracking system you use on the flight sim,
@@NorthEastFPV TrackIR
It`s nice and i think it could look better if you make a hood to go over the display a bit like you have in any car or real plane .
And if their is a way to sync the refresh rate of the display / camera. 👍
Tried a hood and doesn't help, and the bigger the hood the more it obscures the FPV view
Where did u buy that telemetry?
Can the Display unit be used in Rc scale 470 scale Helicopter 🚁??? @Essential Rc
Hello good sir, just found your videos. I see the approach to the camera mount seems like a film camera gimbal. Have you considered a design more like a WWII bomber turret gimbal? Seems like that might be a way to get a smaller footprint but also full view?
This is what we term the 'flat' gimbal design. We also have a 'stack' gimbal design that achieves what you are referring to. It can be found on our eBay store here... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Essential-RC-DJI-FPV-Gimbal-to-fit-Flightline-Spitfire-Pan-tilt-Fits-Air-Unit/224416768433
Great video. What do I need to get that exact fpv system for my aircraft. I would like the exact same thing you have. Thanks!!
The DJI FPV system used here has been superceeded. You need DJI Goggles 2 (store.dji.com/uk/product/dji-goggles-2?from=store-nav&vid=127611) and a DJI O3 Air Unit (store.dji.com/uk/product/dji-o3-air-unit?from=store-nav).
Nicely done !
1) How did you "get closer" to the instrument panel? Camera zoom? Do you push a button for that?
2) I couldn't see the speed. Could you?
3) Do you really need the RPM gauge? You could use the place for speed display (will help in landing....).
4) Do you think that if you'll build a shelf around the instrument panel it will help you in brighter days?
5) I meant ( a few days ago) if it can be done, not a real compass, but an arrow that will show you the point of which you took off. In that way , you would not get lost.....
1) Editing the video after the flight.
2) Yes. RUclips degrades the video quality quite a bit.
3) There is no RPM gauge!?
4) Sure but it would obstruct the FPV view. Its a trade off.
5) That's what the house symbol on the compass lower left indicates
So the right upper gauge is the speed gauge? If so, is it in MPH or KPH ?
I LOVE LOVE this stuff. I’ll probably never have the time until I either get rich, or retire.
Nice. I would like to see it closer to the camera. Even if you have to look down to see it.
It wouldn't focus properly if did that. Needs to be like 10cm away for the camera to focus. Not a great setup to be honest but worth a try.
Very good attempt at presenting useful telemetry on “instrument panel”. A for effort! It’s in a bit of a pickle though. It needs to be a certain distance away from camera to be seen in focus , however at such distance, the data are bordering on too small to be legible. Needs more refinement to be a useful display, from the perspective of an FPV pilot.
It won't replace good OSD telemetry for me but its a great dynamic feature to have in an FPV cockpit.
That’s Pretty dang cool! Have you tried shading the display? If the screen is getting washed out it might help.
Yes. Showed that in a later video but regardless of that the info displayed will always be difficult to read. The telemetry that we get in the OSD in the DJI goggles is much better. Just unfortunate it cannot be shown in a video at the moment.
Check out my homemade fpv cockpit with the dji system hooked to it and like, share, and subscribe
Ok how to buy this, where ?!
Very cool video! What receiver are you using in the jet? Do you get OSD telemetry on your DJI goggles? I fly drones, but not sure what type of receiver to get that will work on RC airplanes to get telli to show in my goggles.
If I need telemetry I use Matek flight controllers but they add a lot of complexity. I didn't do that on this project because was experimenting with that small standalone LCD.
@@EssentialRC thanks for info, ill look into the Matek system !
And to be clear we run iNav on our Matek flight controllers.
Where can I get this
Do you use a flight controller? How do you power the air unit?
No flight controller on this project. Air unit powered by connecting its power lead to the 6S flight battery with a dupont connector.
Do you know of a way (if it's possible) to do head tracking without using the transmitter? The reason being is that I'd like to set this up with some RC cars. I'm not looking to change all my cars to a flight type transmitter.
I don't, sorry. My only suggestion would be you have a second receiver for the head tracking in the car that is controlling the pan/tilt servos via signal from 2nd transmitter hooked up to head tracker. That 2nd transmitter could just be on the bench while you use your normal transmitter for controlling the car.
@@EssentialRC That's the only thing I could think of as well. Appreciate the reply, man! 🙌
tilt screen in direction of camera
Nothing for sale at that EBay link?
Ill ask Jason to fix that
Something a little laggy on your HSI Horz Sit Indicators... I tried to focus on just HSI... needs much less lag...GL
Agree. There is a delay but it makes an FPV cockpit a lot more interesting 😉
Interesting idea and hopefully the brightness issue gets sorted. If not then it's a bit much to pay to only use on cloudy days. I personally think having all 4 telemetry readouts on one screen is too much, too small. Would be cool if you could cycle through each telemetry readout manually so each one can fill up the entire screen or maybe even on some type of auto-cycle so you can see each gauge for say 5sec. Having it on say a switch to stop the auto-cycle for say the airspeed screen when you are landing.
RCGauges are aware of the problem. He is continuing the development so with luck we'll see improvements soon.
Hi Dom. How can I get a true On-Screen Display for speed, altitude, distance model is away from me and a Return to Home arrow for the DJI Air Unit?
Look at Matec F405 or F675
@@EssentialRC Will do
@@cobratraxxas yes you need an FLight controlled one of the 405 units will do the job, then use a uart port. Lots of tutorials online for it
@@randall8686 Thank you! What's an uart port though?
@@cobratraxxas it stands for “Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter” in simple terms it’s how one device talks to another such as a air unit and flight controller or reciver and flight controller etc. Think of it as a USB port on a pc it’s how you connect one device to the brain. It sounds complex and I will be honest it’s daunting when you first start messing with iNav etc but once you get your head around it then it’s not that bad. Checkout a channel called painless360
Speed is in mph or km
You choose when you order it but mine was in mph
Can you give me the product link?
Read the video description
Are you selling this?
Selling what exactly?
Hi I've ordered one of you dji pan gimbal from ebay.... It says dispatched.... But not delivered
... Messaged you twice please can you get back to me. Thank you
I've let Jason know.
OK thanks
Why don't you put an instrument cluster shield on your panel? Just having a flat panel isn't too smart. There is a reason real aircraft have a shield.....so you can see the instruments.
Useless. May as well have a sticker on dash with flickering LEDs. If it were mounted on the RX ?
