Welcome back to Teachers Off Duty! This week our hosts Gabe Dannenbring, Leslie Rob, and Tyler Jackowski share their most bizarre dress code stories!
We start off by covering some of the weirdest dress code rules we’ve encountered, from prohibitions on wearing tennis shoes without a doctor's note, to restrictions on the number of toes that can be shown, and even policies that prevent teachers from changing their hairstyles throughout the school year, we've seen it all. Even though we don't think about it, how we dress impacts our lives in major ways, but not only for our students though…
Now when we talk about dress codes normally it’s pertaining to our students, but today we are going to be going into some dress codes for teachers! Apparently at some schools teachers are required to wear three-piece pantsuits; and we debate on whether professionality comes before the impracticality and financial burden that this outfit would put on its teachers. We also touch on the broader implications of these rules, such as the negative effects on teacher morale and the potential for dress codes to enforce outdated or discriminatory standards.

So put on your best three piece suit, because teachers are getting dress coded on this week's episode of Teachers Off Duty.
Heels were originally created for men
''High-heeled shoes were first worn in the 10th century as a way to help the Persian cavalry keep their shoes in their stirrups. Since then, men's heels have gone through varied cultural meanings: symbolizing high social stature, military prowess, refined fashionable taste, and the height of 'cool'.''
"I work in a school, why am I running?" Real
Too real!
To get to the bathroom 😂
I just KNEW Gabe and Tyler would be bffs. I'm way too happy that I'm right.
They definitely hit it off 🤩
At my last school, we had a pretty lax dress code. So much to a point, that a girl showed up, wearing a blanket over herself, and it turned out She was only wearing a bra and capris. She and a boy were found in the lounge doing the hanky-panky, and after that day, blankets were no longer allowed at school, no matter what. Oh, and hell yeah free the ankle!!!❤
I can run in any shoe, im a prek teacher. But i will protect my toenails 😅😂
LOL 😂 Gotta protect the pedi!
I was a very vocal kid. End of senior year i got stopped for dress code violation on the way from the bathroom (she actively sought me out due to teacher complaint) because, drum roll....
I had pj pants on. My entire body was covered except my hands neck and head. Yet the staff actively gave warm welcoming to other girls...
I asked her how i was violating dress codes when the girls walking by had shorts so short they're only underwear and half had their labia showing? (Rule was like 1inch above knee) she got flusteree and demanded we call my parents. I told them exactly that and they laughed before coming in to talk to her and the principal.
I got in trouble at home for being rude but lightly, 0 at school lol. Dress codes are just bullshit half the time
Our guide was “if you wear it to the bar, the beach or in the bedroom - it’s most likely not appropriate for school”
when i was in hs the girls from 9th to 12 were gathered together to tell us we needed to dress better and not look like "ladies of the night" most of us wore sweats or leggings with oversized hoodies.
the teachers who called us ladies of the night had to make an apology to all of us the next morning because the school had so many calls about it
Love this group; can hear each voice as they don’t interrupt each other. Great topic
In my opinion, if you have a rule at your school that teachers can’t sit at their desk then you shouldn’t have a rule saying they can’t wear tennis shoes.
Technically, heels were invented originally for men. If you look at a lot of old portraits, men often posed in heeled shoes to make their legs look stronger. Women didn't adopt heels into their fashion until the 1700s, if I'm not mistaken.
18:13 “free the ankle”
You’re welcome
LOL 😂 Your support is appreciated 😅
The thing I always thought was the craziest was if your shorts go above your knees or you have less then 2 inch straps on your shirt you get sent home… but the cheerleading uniforms, that girls wear to class, cover less then my underwear and have spaghetti straps. Uniforms are out if dress code but fine because they’re uniforms.
1) 10 crazy!!!! I have bunions and "dress" shoes hurt
2) 10 crazy!!! As long as all the bits are covered...we good!!
When I was in high school they came out with a dress code video.. and I shit you not.. the video was entirely of what girls cannot wear. I got in school suspension because I had a quarter size hole in my jeans exactly 1 inch above my knee. I was told it could be distracting to young men… but another girl was wearing a mini skirt then looked like she was about to go clubbing.. when I pointed that out, they said “ this isn’t about her. This is about you.”
Couldn’t wear certain tank tops because their shoulders could distract boys .. and one person said it might make male teachers uncomfortable
I was dress coded in the first grade for wearing a “muscle tank” to school. 😒 it was a tank top. On a 7 year old. So distracting.
2. NO POCKETS ABSOLUTELY 10
Right?! 🙃 So ridiculous!
I was super preppy in high school & my best friends in the world at school were the goth/emo dressing kids. Goth people are wonderful people with big hearts who have the soul of an artist.
We need a photo of Gabe in his Cowboy outfit😂😂
3. 1 i dont let my toes show, those lil kid hugs can take one off, ask me how i know
Oh no 😅
My favorite panel of Teachers Off Duty. Awesome Teacher's 🤟
Thanks for being here! 🎙️✨🤩
The knee hitting the table was priceless the way he described it was so funny and the SEE WHAT YOU DO LESLIE made me laugh so hard
I wore black all through middle school and high school and I must have completely messed up the criminal thing because I had a 3.8 GPA the entire time. 😂😂😂
High heels were invented in the 10th century for men who had trouble keeping their feet in their stirrups when they rode horses.
When I was teaching Elementary Art the principal said I could not wear leggings with my dresses only panty hose or bare legs.... so sexist also I was teaching k-5 if I'm sitting on my carpet with kindergarteners I'm not wanting to flash anyone... so not sure what you think that rule is doing... not only that but as an art teacher it was one of the only ways I had left to express myself. I like to wear fun leggings with art prints. I had previously been told I had to dye my hair because i had a couple blue streaks in it as well so not only did they take my hair but my leggings and what felt like my sense of self I did not last long at that school...
I beg to argue that those who don't dress for spirit week are NOT necessarily hated by students. There were some days I dressed for (actually bought regular PJs to wear for pajama days) but near the end of my 32 years of teaching, I stopped dressing up. I grew to not like spirit dress up days because of how disruptive the students were on dress up days. I taught 7th and 8th science and the last few years student misbehavior was out of control!! And my students, for the most part, loved me and my class!
I go to an all girls catholic private Highschool in Australia and we have pleated dresses that are our uniform but we do have sports uniform for PE. we can only have natural coloured hair (no unnatural colours such as blue or purple) hair has to always be tied up, no bracelets, no necklaces with pendants, plain white socks with shoes, no converses, vans and sleeper earrings or plain studs…..it’s a lot 😅
Tbh I get it when teachers and students don't do spirit week. School can be draining and spirit week themes can take some time and prep, and thats easier for some people than others
Only 3 toes… Such a ridiculous rule, so I’m pushing boundaries. Is this 3 out of 10 or 3 on one foot or 2 on the right & 1 on the left? Oh the possibilities!😂 (20 year veteran teacher, voluntarily retired)
When I was in school, my school went thru a bunch of dress codes, from uniforms to relaxed, and then talking about uniforms again, but they kept it relaxed, And also when i was a senior, we would get away with any type of clothing such a ripped jeans, but if you had a crop top on you would still get talked to but they wouldnt make you change
I LOVE spirit week, especially with Middle School because they tend to get clever costume ideas (Like we had the alphabet going backwards one year and I wore a T-Shirt representing every letter. Which is why I have a t-shirt of a cat playing a Xylophone, a Walrus dressed like the Mona Lisa and a Zebra wearing sunglasses).
"Don't do that" thanks for clarifying not to actually punch the superintendent in the face. Lmao
The most crazy dress code that is what I ever been to had for students were you have to wear polo shirt and a khaki pants but the polo shirt had to be tucked in to the khaki pants and the polo shirt can only be the three colors they pick nothing else and I believe in kids get in trouble for not tucking in their shirt
And to make it even more crazy about the polo shirt every single school in the district had a different set of three colors you could have where which means it wasn't coherent throughout the district the worst part is imagine as a parent moving from elementary to middle school and realizing that all the nice blue shirt that you buy for your kid last school year doesn't work because that's not one of the colors for the new school they're going to in the same district
we call those toes.....cliffhangers LOL
I had a friend who would be full decked out black emo and was the happiest friendly person I knew.
God I don’t know that I even would have paid those hairstylists. That’s awful. Take a recording of your kids making fun of you and send it to them 😢
I LOST IT with the "Free the ankles" situation 😂 haven't stopped laughing since! Lmao Also the "what can 3 toes do that 4 toes can't"..... I'm done! 😂😂😂
I was teaching in Korea and we weren’t supposed to wear “outside shoes.” I was seeing an orthopedist for an Achilles injury. He had to write a note to let me keep sneakers in my desk because wearing the typical slides/slippers was aggravating to my injury.
absolutely love the kill tony shout out lollllll
#1. 10: I am running kids down daily. I am not doing this in dress shoes.
#2. 10: No pockets?!?! get out of here!
#3. 2: doesn't matter to me, never wear sandals or open toe shoes ever.
#4. 5: I like polos and short sleeves. But Ill rock a long sleeve dress shirt too.
#5. 10: Fight me I love my jeans.
#6. 5: I have had the same haircut forever. But I do a facial hair change throughout the year. But I understand that some folks like changing their hair every week.
#7. 10: aaa no pants suits.
#8. 1: I don't care about jewelry. That is just weird.
#9. 10: crazy rule let them express what ever way they want.
Tutu and teacher tshirt for the first day of school! Love dressing up!
As someone who loves wearing suits, even I agree you shouldn’t require teachers to wear them.
High heels have a long history with many uses, including:

Stability while riding
In the 10th century, Persian cavalry soldiers began wearing high-heeled shoes to keep their feet in stirrups and to shoot arrows more effectively. The modern cowboy boot is a direct descendant of this tradition.

Upper-class status
In ancient Egypt, wearing heels was a sign of wealth.

Keeping feet clean
In the 16th century, European streets were dirty with sewage and garbage, so men and women wore heels to keep their feet clean.

Ceremonial purposes
In ancient Egypt, high heels were worn for ceremonial purposes, as depicted in murals.

Military prowess
In the 17th century, European aristocrats adopted heels as a symbol of virility and military prowess. King Louis XIV passed an edict in 1670 that only nobility could wear heels.

Salsa and rumba
In the early 1900s, Cuban heels became popular as men's shoes for dancing salsa and rumba. They eventually became popular for women as well.
Former student story
I will die on the hill of dress codes are stupid. Both of my middle schools had a "no joggers" rule. At my second middle school, We had a spirit day where we had to wear camo. The only camo I owned was a pair of cargo pants that had elastic in the ankles. I got sent to the office before the second bell for class to start even rang. My mom literally had to drive from work(which was an hour away) all the way home to bring me pants. A year later, I got dress codes for a dress that was an inch too short on the sides... ON THE SIDES. They refused to let me call my mom to have her bring me different clothes. I had to wear the school issued , hardly ever washed, property of (school name) shirt and sweats.
I wrote my SAT essay about dress codes and my view on them and got a perfect 5 score.
High heels were actually a fashion statement for high-class Western European men, who were inspired by the masculinity of the Persian calvary (and their heeled shoes for riding). Like most fashion at the time, it ended up "trickling down" to women when skirt hems went up to ANKLE LENGTH and their shoes could actually be seen. Eventually, after the two world wars, the decline of the nobility, and the rise of the working-class man, high-heels found a place in the woman's sex industry. Except now the heels were higher so that woman's leg muscles had be used when wearing them, giving the legs a "sexier" shape. This cemented them in modern fashion as a sign of ideal femininity even outside of the bedroom. Wearing them in a professional setting is, however, a remnant of the push and pull of woman's rights in the later half of the 20th century to today as well as fashion trends throughout the decades. Hope this helps!
Also, flip-flop high heels exist. Not sure where they fall on the list of acceptable shoes, but I know that shorter women tend to prefer them and I did have a proctor once who jumped down from the top of a desk while wearing them. Surprised she didn't hurt herself, tbh.
Mr.J I don’t have a fancy fridge either. Try not to be to upset 😅
I sweat circulating the class and being near the smartboards. I am constantly taking off my sweaters. I don't wear dress shirts.
Just found this podcast randomly. This is the 4th episode I've watched. You all are freaking hilarious!!! I've been laughing soo hard 😆 😂
Hey Gabe, thanks for the shoutout !!! #SKOL
Gabe, immediately making it clear he doesn't teach Geography: Not in the continental US! Except that they've been to Hawai'i and Canada, neither of which is the continental US.
Down here in the south we dress like a cowboy every Friday 😂 I would’ve took you more seriously
My middle school didn’t have a dress code. The only code was don’t come to school in a bikini. My English teacher came to school in a pantsuit with a satin green shirt underneath and really tall heels.
In the UK we say, as long as you can't see up it, through it or down it.
My last school changed spirit week every year. Financially I could not keep up
UK teachers are suited and booted. All children have a strict uniform, A tye, blazer ect.
It's only recently they have been allowed to wear Nike air force 1's.
i love tyler man
Love the podcast!!❤❤❤
Thank you so much for your support! 🤩🎙️✨
“YOU JUST TOOK THE SENTENCE OUT OF MY THROAT!” 💀💀💀 Oh believe me I’m gonna use that one in the future 😂
I started teaching in 1988, and we had to wear skirts or dresses five days a week. I switched schools in 1993 and we could wear slacks, blouses and nice shoes. In 2001 I taught in an alternative High School and we could wear jeans, T-shirts and gym shoes. In 2010 the school board passed a strict dress code. We could not wear jeans, T-shirts or sneakers. Shirt collars could graze the collar bone but not go farther down, no sneakers were allowed, tight pants were prohibited, skirt/dresses should be no shorter than above the knee. Why? The school board was planning to make and enforce a stronger dress code for students the following year. The school board wanted the teacher's dress code to be stricter than students.
i work at a learning center if i had to wear dress shoes how would i be able to chase after the little gremlins that run out of the rooms
Open toe heels vs peep toe heels is what the three toe showing rule is supposed to address. It still doesn't make sense
You will pry my sandals and pockets out of my cold dead hands. I absolutely refuse to bow down to someone taking my comfy stuff. When nc isn’t sitting at the bottom in state pay and instead goes above the top 25% line I might reconsider. Until then, I dictate what I wear to the school and I don’t particularly care what someone might have to say. What are they gonna do? Fire me? They would need 3 people to fail at what I can do.
I was told that heels were made for made for men of status and the higher status he has, the higher the heel.
Not a teacher but at my high-school we had uniforms Navy,Red or white polo like shirts and khakis
The dress code is okay in my school. No crop tops, no shorts that goes past your fingers, no tank tops that dont past the two finger rule and nothing that has bad words, middle fingers or anything like that.
But i swear they dont even care bout it- well let me rephrase that, they dont care when its the popular kids. My bff got in trouble for you shorts but a popular girl in our same grade the same day didn't get dress coded even tho her's were up higher then my bffs. Its so stupid.
You are right about why high heels were 'invented'. It was a sexual thing.
No. They were invented for men so that they could keep their feet in the stirrups when they rode horses.
Yo I love gabe lmao that switch to emo was perfect
I’m sorry too many kids with head lice I’m having my hair up thank you very much
This is my favorite group!!! But I’ve loved everyone I’ve seen come on here!
My favorite Spirit day is always fashion train wreck day.
I AM SO HAPPY YOU GUYS ARE COMING TO IL IT IS MY DREAM TO SEE YOU GUYS. CANT WAIT!!!!!
You guys should do a teachers aid episode:)
Double call back 😂😂😂😂
Shoe wise, we have to have a shoe that has an ankle strap (to ensure shoe doesn’t come off - OH&S) so I wear sandals but there are staff who are required to wear certain shoes (science, wood tech, food tech etc)
I just bought a refrigerator without an icemaker. I rarely use ice. 😁
What pants don't have pockets??
About a zillion pairs of pants in the women's section of the store.
Women's section has so many fake pockets/just none at all.
If it hadn't specified men in the "no jewelry" id understand. If you are working in certain settings or ages, it could be unsafe to have certain kinds of jewelry. Little ones pulling earings. Students with certain behavior health. One of my coteachers almost got chocked by her lanyard when a student was having a behavior issue.
Free the ankle
-gabe
At my school the only really enforced dress code rule (other than dress appropriately) is no sweat pants and it’s the best thing ever. We have certain areas (mainly for the older students) that you are not allowed to enter if you wear your sweatpants. It has to do with the moral of we’re here to be productive and awake and that won’t work if you’re wearing your pjs and you won’t be doing that at your workplace most likely so get used to it (to be fair I’m at a gymnasium in Germany; so the “highest” form of high school where they basically put all of the students that are more likely to go to university and study there)
Mr. J chaos is my fav 😂😂😂
Back in the day showing ankles was a tease. Lol
one school i went to we had to wear uniforms you know the awful feeling polos khakis or navy blue pants/ khaki or navy blue dress that you wore over the polo shirt, we couldnt wear red polos becuase red was a gang color
Sorry the sexy high heels thing is so wrong. 😂 High heels were invented for men originally.
High-heeled shoes were first worn in the 10th century as a way to help the Persian cavalry keep their shoes in their stirrups. And before that if I remember correctly Ancient Egypt, about 3500 B.C. the first high heels were worn by butchers were able to walk over slaughtered animals and bloody floors without dirtying their feet
Obsessed with this podcast!!
Thanks for your support and being here! 🤗🎙️✨
@@TeachersOffDutyPodcast of course!
Also flip flops because they get very slick if anything liquid drops on the floor.
Yeah, I figure they also want to avoid having open toes to prevent injury in case something were to fall on your foot, get stepped on, or hit your foot into something. I know that's the reason most work places so no open toes shoes especially if they have to be OSHA compliant.
The all black dress code stipulation is wild. When I heard about it I thought the same ...black looks good and when you've got 3 or 4 colors to mix and match...sometimes kids just like black(dress code schools)
I remember a middle school teacher that on the last day of spirit week for the homecoming game she would put her hair in a mohawk. One year her Mohawk was so big she had to lean her hair out the sunroof on the way to school.
Black clothes in Australia in summertime is a no go you will get heat exhaustion. In winter time is fine to wear
Is Hawaii considered overseas?
Canada is not in the continental United States gabe 😂… I think you were looking for the term North America 🇺🇸
My old district in another state didn't have one. However, my current school does. We can only wear black, white, charcoal gray, navy, and royal blue. They must be solid, with no prints/patterns.
I don't have a problem with the colors. Blue is my favorite color. But I have a lot of black and white pieces, like houndstooth etc. I can't wear them.
Nothing with writing on it unless it's the school logo. However, I have pushed the envelope by wearing dove gray instead of charcoal gray. I have worn black / white t-shirts with Black History or Women's History Months written on them. On May 21st, I wear my black Biggie Smalls shirt and on June 16th, my black Tupac shirt. Neither has words on them, but I sometimes wear a button down shirt over them.😉
Not allowed to wear sweat pants or leggings, and I heard in the past that they used to not let people wear tights. But now, if you wear a dress or a shirt past your hips, you can wear it.
Every few months, they send a mass email out that there are people not following the dress code. It's usually a few people but we all get shamed. I wish they would just email the people they have a problem with directly.
The last time we were sent a mass email, I was reflecting on if I had done something thecday in question. We're not supposed to wear sneakers. Well, I wear Sketchers because I'm old, voluptuous 😊, and diabetic and I need my feet to be comfortable. So, I had my doctor write me a note becayse I didn't want them to come for me.
Then, a couple of months later, HR revised the dress code for K-12 to say that if you want to wear sneakers, you need to provide a doctor's note. Wild! I guess, I'm a trendsetter.😁
OMG there coming to wv I love yall so much hopefully I can see ayll
My school has no dress code (for everyone teachers and students) one of my teachers came in a full latex suit and nobody complained so to me those dress code are crazy in top of being futile (you can also sometimes see girls in bikini top and booty shorts when it’s summer)
I have the same sleeve problem with off the rack long sleeves, so I always push them up to my elbows, when people ask about it I pull one sleeve down for a moment and they always drop it after that. I also don't like collars tight around my neck and I hate ties so I wear them for as short a time as possible, strangely though I'm ok with turtlenecks.
You guys should do an episode about student teachers
We don’t have a dress code at my school but sometimes I wish we did.
I had a couple of, let’s say well endowed, girls in my senior class who turned up in short skirts and crop tops. They could absolutely wear that kind of stuff. They looked phenomenal in it.
However, I, as a female teacher, did not know where to look. I can only imagine what my male colleagues thought or what the guys in their year and the years below thought. That kind of dress was distracting to me!
I wish we had a dress code against this kind of stuff. Same goes with low cut tops. I don’t want to see all the way down to the bellybutton when I talk to a kid. Some of these kids, and parents, really need to think about what their dress does to others.
Another pet peeve of mine is wearing leggings (or even worse yoga pants) as substitute for jeans/trousers. I love wearing them underneath a dress or skirt but they are not the same thing as trousers. No matter your body type! I really don’t want to see what kind of underwear you have on. I don’t want them shining through, I don’t want them peaking out up top or down below. Keep it covered!
My schools dress code was where whatever you want but if staff thinks its inappropriate then it will go to the student board and the studints will decide if its inappropriate or not and what the punishment will be if it is
I can’t break up a fight in heels.
We had the no tennis shoes back in early 2000’s!!! It was a 10
It's not a phase.
My school we can wear whatever as long as it is appropriate. I think admins and office staff have to dress more professional
