Yes I am Australian and we would have to do an evacuation practice once a year so that you knew what to do in case of fire (also covers b0mb threats too). Lockdown isn't a thing. That is more just annoying, having to hide in place and make sure everyone is silent, that is next level stress.
It’s been interesting as a student, especially as a disabled student. Even just with drills, they are super anxiety inducing. False alarms are something. I was with an art teacher after school with her grandson (little), false alarm went off, I shut and locked the doors, took him under her desk and just wrapped my body around him. Wasn’t real, but when you don’t know that, it doesn’t help. Because it was after school, my parents were there and I think it made shootings a new kind of reality for them. I was in kindergarten during Sandy Hook. I know I can’t physically run, my best shot is hiding and hiding good.
as someone whos spent their entire life in america, the scary part is that lockdown drills don't really stress students out at all. they're so normal and happen so often (usually twice a semester for my school) that nobody really takes it seriously. they still hide and be quiet, but it's just a part of school for them
Canadian here, we have lockdown practices just incase but in my entire grade school study I don’t recall ever having a real lockdown. I do recall a secure school because we had a bear on school property and because some students had medical emergencies and they didn’t want us roaming around the halls.
I already like that Tyler and Gabe are already starting off this podcast that talk about their last names and being real bros 😂😂😂😅😅 way to start off the Teacher’s Off Duty podcast.
started tearing up when glen said “we’re gonna end up on the news” i can’t even imagine being in that situation especially if it was accidental, bless him
I worked with a male teacher who was that one teacher that never had to send a kid out for discipline. He had amazing classroom management. He then got his admin certification and became the principal at the same high school. Literally in his second year, he had a heart attack at school. He was probably in his early 40’s. Luckily, he is ok and went back to the classroom!
This video should be share with any politician that doesn’t think teachers need to be paid more, supported more, or valued more. We are facing a shortage of teachers for a myriad of reasons, from overall low pay, too low support to assess on our health, including anxiety.this right here
As someone who had went to special ed schools since second grade till hs graduation teachers and staff, for some students can be some of the closest in loving people in their life, especially when they don’t have the best home life sometimes those teachers are the only people who show those kids love
So for those teachers who really care about their students and no matter how mean those students are to them they still don’t give up on them. We love you and appreciate you.
Worked at an elementary school with glass front doors, then the "security" doors to buzz into the main hallways were also glass. Six other doors to the outside glass. Not only a problem if there is an active schooler but also dangerous in case of a tornado.
Thank you for doing a serious topic episode, Teaching isn’t always fun and people got to see that. The little kids at an old school of mine, like to pretend to make the fire alarm noise and we had kids who had serious PTSD so we had to talk to them about not doing that because they were scaring their friends away from school. Also, thank you Gabe for talking about making every kid accountable no matter what! Final note, it’s always great to see an episode where everyone is laughing, and nobody’s being made fun of
Teaching is hard wherever you are (I'm in Scotland) and I love how teaching stories cross borders and just relate everywhere. But, I cannot imagine working in an environment where there is a very real risk of lockdown and active shooters on site. Hats off to what you guys do to take all the stresses of the job *and* cope with that ever present threat too.
46:00 I agree to be careful on dealing with kids to dealing with trauma, BUT I will not regret my interaction with my now adopted kid - he was going through a bad parent situation, and I've been the one reporting it and so on. I was already registered as a foster parent, so he got placed with me as an emergency placement, and he's been with us ever since. We has just adopted him.
My mom is a preschool teacher and I am an assistant to everyone at the preschool(only 7 classes) we were just talking about how tiring it is. And we only work 4 hr days.
Retired SPED para here. My last year we had a lock down drill. Half our class was in a closet and the others were in our bathroom. Our 5th grader, who was in the closet, wet his pants. We didn't know if he didn’t want to ask to go or if it was from fear. I'm old enough to remember drills we had in case of an atomic bomb. One school had a basement and it was the fallout shelter. I remember as a 4th grader thinking that if all my family died, I wouldn't want to survive.
one of the rarest episodes where Gabe doesn't interrupt the person saying the Tour locations with a "WOAH" or "AYY" or "Wanna know a fun fact about......"😂
For all my really rough upbringing, the ability that I have to empathize and still hold my students to a high standard make it worth it. I've had students who other teachers say they never do anything for them, and I've never had an issue with. It really does highlight how critical this job really is, but also being responsible for all of those lives? That's why I had to nap after school yesterday and I rarely ever nap unless I'm sick. Last time was during covid.
tylers last stpry legitimately made me cry because my brother has adhd and he just got accepted into a great art school and i know how proud he is of his art and it just made me so happy learning about that girl getting into her dream school
The story about the child making threats and the admin not informing anyone is all too familiar. Happened at my school and a teacher was harmed & a community is still traumatized smh
When Gabe brought up loosing his grandma brings up last school year when I was in sixth grade my science teacher lost her dad and we had a sub for the rest of the year (it was at the end of the year).
I'm not a teacher, but in July I worked as a children summer camp monitor, basically I had a group with 20 9 and 10 year olds and i had to entertain them so we had a lot of activities, some that required going to other places by bus. On the last day, as we were going back to the school our bus broke down (I think it burned the clutch or something like that) and the back of the bus hit a wall that was behind. I was the coordinator there (mind you, I was 19 and my co-workers were all older than me, and of course I had never dealt with that in my life). The anxiety Started to Kick in. The bus driver instructed me to get all the children out the bus. As I was doing that calmly with the objective of not scaring more the kids, the bus driver did not help trying to rush them, and as I was doing that and leading the kids somewhere safe, I was at the same time phone-calling ALL the parents to let them know what was going on (as we were running behind on schedule) and taking care of the kids that were crying. I never felt more anxiety in my life, and I felt like sharing this here
Mind you that we were kinda far from the school, and I didn't even knew where I was, and besides all of that I had to monitor 20 children not to run to the road, all of this for 2 fucking hours. I thank all of my co-workers for helping there, because if I was alone doing that there would be no fucking way that all would end well. But yeah after all that stress I felt really bad for them, as I screamed to them Without intenting to, I was just anxious. I apologized later but it was a hard situation
Thanks for doing this and sharing your storiew. I'm a senior English teacher doing part of my Student Teaching at a middle school with good and rough classes and listening to your stories have helped me a lot to don't feel so lost.
I'm a senior in high school who loves to watch your guy's podcast and I want to become a teacher and love to hear the stories that you guys are telling lol.
BTW, my niece was actually shot in a school shooting in 8th grade. Thank goodness, she survived but has permanent damage physically and emotionally. You can only imagine what lockdowns did to me. I actually had to retire on disability when they couldn’t get my panic attacks under control thirty years later!
i'll never forget when i was 16 and we got given the option in one of my classes to make a run for it during a lockdown drill bc we were right next to the exit. like. its actually Insane the way lockdown drills are handled
Active shooter drills with 3 year olds is so anxiety inducing. How do you explain to children that young why we’re doing this without completely terrifying them? I had a kiddo several years ago after one of our drills ask me “what if the bad guy gets you?” I said “keep running and find another teacher”. 😢
I’m from Canada and we practise lockdown but I’m not scared of it cause it’s so rare and I’m happy for that but the best thing is that me and my friends have escape plans for every class
I am from Hong Kong and I hate teaching. But it pays extremely well, sometimes even earning more than American teachers just based off of how much people are saying they are getting paid from what I've seen on Reddit.
so is no one going to mention how tyler said “vancouver connecticut”?????TYLER VANCOUVER IS IN CANADA AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT COUNTRY,NOT CONNECTICUT WHICH IS IN THE US
The lockdown situation happened to me, too. I heard what I thought were gunshots in the bathroom (it was fireworks). I put my kids on lockdown. When I found out it was false, I literally broke down crying and shaking. Then I couldn't calm myself down for the rest of the day. It's like I could still feel the trauma.
I get you Mr J! I (student) went into school the day I had a stomach surgery because a teacher had a no retake test I had to go in with a bunch of monitors. My teacher saw me and the first thing he said was “yeah you’re not getting an loose grade because of all this” (THIS ISNT ME COMPARING STUDENTS ANS TEACHERS JUST SYMPATHIZING BECAUSE IT SUCKS)
One time, there was a student in the resource room who had a gun on him. We were in a full code red. To make it worse, the first act of the school play was being put on for the kindergarteners at the time. Their teachers and our director were throwing us into dressing rooms. The little kids in the back and the older ones in the front. It was intense. Luckily, the kid was calmed down and never shot, so no one was hurt, but it was close. It was horrifying.
I live in georgia, where literally, two days ago a fourteen year old went into a high school and killed four people. There are now rumors being posted all over Instagram about there. Being a gang of school shooters, and that there is a list of schools targeted to be shot up and my son is so scared that I let him stay home today. I'm scared enough as a parent to have a student go to school. Where shootings are now a reality? I can't imagine being a teacher and having to live that daily reality. It's heartbreaking enough watching my freshmen in high school live it.
I teach in England and we do lockdown drills. Even without the threat of guns (in a realistic event in my area) the anxiety for drills is so high. Especially when they're unexpected...
My school went into lock down for 2.5 hrs because someone hit a transformer a block away and it cut out power. We didn't know what was happening for the first FULL 30 mins. It was awful.
The lock down procedure is actually why I like the ALICE procedures. And also the fact that my school was originally built to be like a prison with having all of the grades separated except for gym, fine arts, FACS, and Career and Technology advancement classes. Also there are very little windows.
I'm getting into school librarianship. On a placement we were going into a lockdown drill the period I was leaving. I had anxiety thinking I would get caught out in the hallway during a lockdown or stuck in the library. It was terrifying thinking I was going to be a meat shield for the kids.
Ill never forget the stupidest thing my school did about three years ago. So im in a K-12th grade school i was in 6th grade and for some reason they put the school next to a prison??? So well a prisoner got out the night before. It was on the news but the school didnt do call or anything so we all went to school. Well about lunch time me, and a few of my oldest friends (including a senior) was like 'hey we wanna go to subway for lunch! We can go right?' because we did that very often. And the 6th grade teacher just looked at us and goes "no we're in lock down. No one can leave" and im like WTF if we're in lockdown why tf are we roaming the halls and being really like SUPER LOUD and she just goes "because we dont want to frighten the little students. If it gets worse well do a public lockdown that the whole school will lnow but for now keep it under wraps" it turns out that the escaped convict was literally ON SCHOOL GROUNDS! not even kidding when i say that police caught him in the playground. Scariest day but like only four or five people know wabout it.
I'm a full-time substitute as I finish my BA in English. Please don't feel guilty for needing a sub. We sign up for it. This pays my bills. This gives me experience.
I can semi relate to you going to work straight after surgery. I used to be a manager at fast food and there has to be at least one manager on site at all times. I had 2 wisdom teeth out in the morning (they managed to move up when they were doing it so I hadn't put in a leave request) and still went to my afternoon shift that day because there wasn't coverage.
They didn’t ask a single teacher before designing those schools with all those windows. So incredibly frustrating and stupid as hell! Just shows how disconnected admin is
I am going to school to be a special educator. However, when I was in high school a peer brought a hand**n to school and had a plan. A fellow student saw the b*llets and reported it. Luckily the school shut down and everyone got out safely. To this day I am still scared and I was out of the building at the time due to dual credit classes.
I think it’s one thing to know your going into a field that is stress is apart of. Like I’m a therapist working with kids from child protective involvement. I knew I was going to be stressed. It’s another when you go into a field like teaching when it’s not explained to those going in.
To also go off this. When I was a social work intern I was in a classroom. I had my teacher counter part ex military look at me mind you I’m 21 or 22. School shootings are real. I will try to protect you and the kids as long as possible. But ultimately you are an adult they are children if we get into that situation you have to make a choice to protect them. School social work was out after that
Also respect on the I’m not trained to handle trauma. I’ve never had to throw my weight around more and my therapeutic credentials than I have had with some schools because they have looked at me as the child’s therapist and said my teachers know how to deal with all sorts of trauma what do you bring.
My school went into a lockdown because a parent came in the school with a knife and making threats. The sad thing is that my class was making jokes the entire time to keep us from worrying about the lockdown.
We had a lockdown because someone escaped jail and was seen in the area, it was so weird because we were informed that it’s a real lockdown but not for an active shooter.. that someone escaped jail and was in the area so our campus went into lockdown and all the doors locked and no one could leave class for like the rest of the day like 1-2:50?
Hmmmm didn't Gabe say in another episode that when the false alarm lock down went off he was in a staff meeting and he broke percidure to check on the kids? Yeah the stories aren't adding up
2 different situations. 2 different years. One situation was only for a select part of the building the other one was for the entire building. Never said I broke procedure to check on the kids.
There are militaries from entire countries that don't deal with half the shit teachers do in the US..😅 And I thought it was bad 15-20 years ago with the girl in my class who had 4 aborabos by 14, lord almighty. At least then someone was bleeding consentually??? 😭
I like leslie and tyler but the rest of the cast additions are so bad. Mainly devin siebold. guy is weird as hell and unprofessional on top of it all, and not funny to boot lol. He's probably gonna pop up to argue with this comment (he loves to argue in the comments lol)

I work in a daycare so I get it. With viewing windows.Like how do I get 20,2 year olds to sit and be quiet. Or 28 4 year olds it freaks me out every drill. I’ve just excepted I may have to fight someone and tell them to run.

i love finding out my teacher has tiktok and is on youtube rn 😭
I can semi relate to you going to work straight after surgery. I used to be a manager at fast food and there has to be at least one manager on site at all times. I had 2 wisdom teeth out in the morning (they managed to move up when they were doing it so I hadn't put in a leave request) and still went to my afternoon shift that day because there wasn't coverage.
You guys are amazing thank you
Thank you for your support! 🤗
Where don't you go on tour? ONE OF THE 50 IS MISSING!!!! When are you going to come to New Mexico?
They didn’t ask a single teacher before designing those schools with all those windows. So incredibly frustrating and stupid as hell! Just shows how disconnected admin is
I would love for yall to come to NYC
I am going to school to be a special educator. However, when I was in high school a peer brought a hand**n to school and had a plan. A fellow student saw the b*llets and reported it. Luckily the school shut down and everyone got out safely. To this day I am still scared and I was out of the building at the time due to dual credit classes.
Ok so I was not the only one who was told last names that end in ski are polish 😆 🤣 I thought I made it up!
“Where do they not go”
Every where but the west coast 🤨
I really just paused this video at 54 minutes to watch Surviving Paradise because of Gabe 😂
Please come to Sacramento Cali!
Anybody else noticed Tyler said Vancouver, Connecticut😂
We had a lockdown because someone escaped jail and was seen in the area, it was so weird because we were informed that it’s a real lockdown but not for an active shooter.. that someone escaped jail and was in the area so our campus went into lockdown and all the doors locked and no one could leave class for like the rest of the day like 1-2:50?
Facts.
I have been told that it is harder to write things down for a sub.
Mr jay needs to be a permanent host😭😭
Vancouver, Connecticut?? 😅
Ran to the comments to make sure I wasn’t the only person that heard it
It is crazy to me we don’t have mandates for bullet proof shields in classrooms
Hmmmm didn't Gabe say in another episode that when the false alarm lock down went off he was in a staff meeting and he broke percidure to check on the kids? Yeah the stories aren't adding up
2 different situations. 2 different years. One situation was only for a select part of the building the other one was for the entire building. Never said I broke procedure to check on the kids.
Am I a teacher? No
Am I an adult? No
Am I responsible for any child? Heck no
But I absolutely LOVE this
Each and everyone og u is amazing ❤
Thanks for watching! 🤩🎙️✨
Watching the Netflix right after this
Can yall please come to Texas
Come to Arizona
UMASS Amherst prepares you for lockdown
Vancouver Connecticut? No such place
i have been a teacher for 33 years....most of us who are still teaching are on meds. LOL...but not funny.
There are militaries from entire countries that don't deal with half the shit teachers do in the US..😅
And I thought it was bad 15-20 years ago with the girl in my class who had 4 aborabos by 14, lord almighty. At least then someone was bleeding consentually??? 😭
Not the haunted cooch😭😭😂😂
How come there are different host?
There's always different hosts once in awhile. In a few weeks, they're going to switch hosts again.
Don’t worry some of your favorites will be back! 🤩

HELLOOOO
Hi there! 😃 Thanks for being here!
FIRST COMMENT WOOHOO
i love the amount of episodes mr j is in 🥹🫶🏼
We love having him! 🎙️✨
I like leslie and tyler but the rest of the cast additions are so bad. Mainly devin siebold. guy is weird as hell and unprofessional on top of it all, and not funny to boot lol. He's probably gonna pop up to argue with this comment (he loves to argue in the comments lol)
my teacher told us if someone comes in everybody throw the desks
The one thing that sucks about being a substitute is you don’t get the “ lockdown emails” or anything. We just deal with whatever comes at us 🫤
I teach in a school that rarely has drills (but we should) so when they come we never expect them and are not told ahead of time.
Active shooter drills with 3 year olds is so anxiety inducing. How do you explain to children that young why we’re doing this without completely terrifying them? I had a kiddo several years ago after one of our drills ask me “what if the bad guy gets you?” I said “keep running and find another teacher”. 😢
I work in a daycare so I get it. With viewing windows.Like how do I get 20,2 year olds to sit and be quiet. Or 28 4 year olds it freaks me out every drill. I’ve just excepted I may have to fight someone and tell them to run.
