I love this song. I had it on a 45 record when I was a young kid. I would sit in my room with my little record player and play it over and over. Thanks for this one.

I moved to Oakland across the Bay from San Francisco in 1979, with no prospects and not knowing anyone within a thousand miles. I was selling my plasma twice a week to eat, and heard this tune when I was hooked up to the needle. A wave of self pity and sadness overwhelmed me, but left me with hope and love in my heart.

The song was unfinished when Redding died in a plane crash. The whistling at the end was supposed to be temporary filler for an unfinished final verse. The song, released after Redding died, became the first posthumous single to top the U.S. charts.

Otis never whistled in his life, it was the producer that whistled just to finish the song and Otis agreed to this.

@@sndrka12 I did not claim Otis was the person who whistled in the song. However, I was not aware it was his producer. Thank you for providing this information

I still get the same haunting feeling of his ghost singing through the wires, long after he had passed. Even from the beginning.
It was as if he knew his life would be a short one. The sadness in his voice was that of a man thrice his age.
Bless you brothers for keeping his soul alive. Madloba.

Great Otis songs include: "Try A Little Tenderness", "I've Been Loving You Too Long" and "These Arms Of Mine". A very influential artist to singers/musicians of all genres. Nicknamed the "King of Soul". As has been mentioned, this song was recorded before the last verse was written, so he just whistled (beautifully).

I grew up in Madison, WI, where his plane crashed in 1967, on its way to Truax Field which wasn't far from where I lived, Over a decade before I was born I should add. I went by Lake Monona hundreds of times in my time in Madison, there is a plaque on the coastline in remembrance to Otis and the other members of his band that died that night.

Gosh, this beautiful and melodic song really takes me back, it was played all the time in the mid to late 60s. Otis Redding had such a fantastic voice and the whole song just carries you along. It was released in 1967 a short time before Otis Redding was killed in a plane crash in December of that year. He was only 26 so really tragic and it just seems to give this fabulous song an extra poignancy. Some other great songs by this amazing singer are My Girl, Respect and Stand By Me. Thanks so much for your reaction, guys.
