      @augustbradley in my humble opinion, and using PPV for years now, is that using formulas lends perfectly to generate meaningful reviews that otherwise would be difficult to do. Grouping certain metrics with let, mapping and filtering are all very powerful in this regard, and this is even more "visible" with yearly reviews imo ( looking forward to that end of year video by the way 🫠 )

    Regarding the layouts
    Q: How the layouts work with database templates?
    Q: Can the layouts and templates combine or they are separate features working independently?
    What I am missing with layouts are the capabilities to layout the page as header section, page section, and footer section. In each section to have fields where we can show the property values. Basically , to have a layout that is like traditional paper page. For example, in the footer to put signed by or signed date. To layout the properties on the page and combine them with page content.
    There is a huge potential for layout improvement and hopefully it will come in next year.
    PS Thx August for another great features presentation video.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  Месяц назад +2

      With templates, it works just like the current approach. So whatever the property layouts are, they're going to be the same for all templates. I agree there is room for expansion, and I suspect Notion will do more with full-page and footer layouts. Right now, you can't really put properties down lower in a page under other page content. But this is a move in that direction, as you can move properties lower in the property stack and have them isolated in their own grouping. It's a great step in that direction.
      You're right, there's more that can be done, and I suspect it will be. I really appreciate your feedback. Good thoughts here!

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  27 дней назад +1

      I'm pretty sure that NotionMail writes those email blocks in the text editor just as HTML. So, they just look like normal HTML when coming into any other email app. They're not actually blocks - there's no six-dot handle or any of that block functionality - other than the ability to insert formatting like callouts, headers, and bullets. It just feels like blocks to you in NotionMail. You're going to have fun playing with it as soon as you get access!

  • @russellmaynard5127
    @russellmaynard5127 Месяц назад +1

    These all look good and practical adds to the system. The one key feature I would love to see is the ability to Filter a Relation Property selection options by another Property's input. At present it just gives you all content of that property in the related DB. I only want to see selection options based on another Property I have already input.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  Месяц назад +1

      I totally agree, that would be a really nice feature. I'm actually surprised we can't do that yet, but sometimes these things take time. I'm hoping we get that in the reasonably near future. Database relations are such a fundamental core component of any system, so sorting by that property would really open things up. Good feedback, thank you. Thank you!

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  Месяц назад +1

      You can always ignore these and use Notion just as before. Layouts are not required, just an optional possibility as you get more comfortable with the core Notion functionality. But overall, I would agree - Notion is getting harder to learn. That's one of the reasons we launched a "How to Learn Notion" training (FastTrack Notion). For years, I had complaints that the RUclips videos were too advanced, and now it's even more complex to learn. So, I wanted to create a simpler onboard program for anyone. There's always a trade-off between capability and ease of use.

    Regarding forms.
    Is it possible to create forms on the existing databases?
    It looks like this is a feature similar to TypeForm to create the surveys and collect data primarily, maybe I am wrong.
    Airtable has feature of input forms but it is possible to use on any table (table in Airtable is like Excel sheet with rows and columns ) to allow entering data easily through the form both externally and internally.

    The layouts don't work in wiki pages. Even worse, we can no longer reposition properties order in wiki pages. Love the feature but I really hope they bring it into wikis. It is kind of a miss in this regard, espcially since all my databases are wikis (clients, orders, invoices, etc.) and that it's not possible either to revert back to a page without losing all properties from the wiki. They should work on this. Great detailed video!

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  Месяц назад +1

      That is frustrating if we lost some of the wiki page flexibility. However, this is just the first iteration of layouts. There are definitely more expansions of these capabilities coming and already in development.
      Your approach of building everything into Wikis is a smart and sophisticated setup. So, I too would be disappointed if they introduced new functionality that didn't work there. One of the ideas of Wikis is that you can use it expansively, as you have. I have to think they're going to bring the capability fully into Wikis - it's just too important of a foundational element.

    while i have managed to organise my entire life (basically) in notion, the multiple occasions of slow loading of databases, or connection issues really makes it a pain sometimes, to enter or even retrieve data.
    i’m currently switching between notion and obsidian in terms of creating personal notes, but for the rest of my entires in terms of my life are all done in notion.

      Sort of. You can have them submit the form and have automations process outcomes as a reaction from that. They're rolling them out to all users over the next couple of days (Layouts, Forms, and Automations). The COO of Notion said he expects to see them fully rolled out by the end of the day today - but at the very latest - Monday or Tuesday, for everybody. This includes forms, layouts, and automations. Of course, this does not include Notion Mail.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  Месяц назад +1

      In the current early stage of development, you cannot add more than one email account. However, I'm certain they're going to add the ability to have multiple email accounts. The question is whether they will have it by the time they launch it publicly. I would have to assume so, but I don't know that for sure.

      Good comparison! Notion is becoming more and more expansive. They started with more flexibility and less of a specific point of view, which allowed for a wider range of possible uses. Google and Zoho began with a suite of apps that were all very specific. Now, Notion is filling in with those specific apps. It will be interesting to see where Notion ends up relative to those two models - it seems like Notion is trying to do the best of both at the moment.

    Thanks for another brilliant video.
    I know the features are still in their early stages and - IMHO - therefore slightly disappointing due to some missing key integrations features. Email (as you say) really needs full integration into core Notion. And although they might introduce it later, I rather fail to see the point of it without the integration. The Form feature feels even more of a half-baked release. Forms that do not have the ability to integrate into existing databases (incl. relationships drop-downs etc.) are just not really replacing any 3rd party form builders such as NoteForms that are already out there. It's limited and basic and sadly multiple steps behind existing tools rather than overtaking them and making them obsolete.
    I know this is all just early stages, but I keep feeling mildly underwhelmed by Notions recent "improvements" which increasingly hit below the mark at the point of release. Notion AI just being one more example.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  Месяц назад

      Fair points on the pros and cons. However, Forms can be applied to existing databases. You do not need to start one from scratch - you can apply Forms to any database you already have in your workspace. I would say forms are a mid-tier level of functionality, but with a very simple, intuitive way of working and effortless integration into your databases. So, it is quite nice, but it doesn't replace the high-end form builders if you have more sophisticated needs.

      You don't think Forms, Layouts, and Formulas in Automations are significant enhancements? All internal and perfectly integrated. • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  Месяц назад

      It's not available in the current stage of development, but I really think this is inevitable. There's no way it can be developed ultimately without that capability, and really, I think a lot more integration than just that. You should be able to select any of your knowledge management databases or tasks - or anywhere an email might be relevant.
      I'm very optimistic about this. Unlike the calendar, this is being built from the ground up entirely as a Notion app, so that's usually promising.

    Ehh, ok. I've got too much to do as is let alone tinkering with layouts. That's a mini-rabbit hole. Email? Naa. On the surface these are nice but the constant complaint w/ power users is speed. The more they put into the software + the larger DBs get, the slower it runs. After I compared coda's formulas w/ notion, I don't bother w/ notion formulas anymore. Thanks for the updates August

      Fair enough, they're just options. And we certainly live in a world of abundant options these days. When designing a system, you can set the layout for key databases once, set and forget, and then get back to work. It really doesn't take much time. But you're also right that a lot of people fall down the tinkering rabbit hole - and that's counterproductive as well.

      Thanks! All my RUclips videos are 4K resolution in the very highest detail level possible - it sounds like your auto-quality resolution setting was set too low by RUclips (you an over-ride this manually). Nothing is blurred if it's set to a high resolution in your video player.
      Just go into your video player settings in the lower right corner (the sprocket icon), and change the quality settings to the highest level - screenshot here: cln.sh/z1B4fQ5S . Dark mode vs light mode background does not affect sharpness. Hope that helps!
      And yes, we go much slower in shorter, more topic-focused steps in the courses. The course videos have very high resolution and are recorded on highe-end (high bit-rate) cameras & screen recorders.
