Pride, Psychedelics, and Refugee Raves in Amsterdam | World Without Planes

- Filmed before the pandemic In this six-part series, childhood friends Bupe Bhima and Matt Shea aim to reduce their carbon emissions and flying shame by avoiding air travel all together - using trains, ferries, coaches, bicycles and electric cars - while tracking their carbon footprint along the way.
The main way we can reduce our carbon footprint is by flying less and the coronavirus has shown us that a world without planes is possible. Before the pandemic, VICE made a sustainable guide to travelling Europe and found out it’s funner without them anyway.
The saga begins with a 20-hour overnight ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam for Pride, one of the biggest queer celebrations in the world. Bupe Bhima and Matt Shea meet some LGBTQ students who are also travelling to Pride the sustainable way, together they hit up the on-board nightclub and casino.
Back on dry shores, they meet local journalist Bo Hanna and cycle to Amsterdamse Bos - a giant park on the edge of the city to microdose on psychedelic truffles with an eco-minded mushroom guru, Chi, in order to get closer to nature.
Returning to reality with open eyes, conscious hearts and throbbing chakras, they head to a sustainable restaurant, Yerba, for some guilt-free food. At the canal parade - the Pyramid Stage of Amsterdam Pride, but with boats and pup masks - Bo explains the origins of LGBTQ rights. They then head to an underground refugee club night, Dance With Pride, before they round it all off by jumping off a bridge for a spot of canal swimming.

I kind of agree but everyone needs to improve. Show me a perfect person!
Who cares at least they're trying
exactly as they us their phones that us precious metals and on and on
This isn't to say what they are doing is wrong. You should 100% go to Pride. We (as a society) trade resource all the time for activities, and doing so in the name of human rights is a worthwhile trade, but you shouldn't ask stupid questions like, are you taking the ferry because it's sustainable? or conflate something having a lesser impact being environmentally conscious.
@@KC-jh3yc What's wrong with Pride at home?
Please don't confuse this purely hedonistic outing as a crusade for "human rights".
"What if they started turning to, you know, things that actually have value. Like mushrooms" I started cracking up at the idea of people trading mushrooms for flat screen TVs and restaurant meals 😂 consumable currency?? Why not.
Imagine Jeff Bezos with a vault full of 10 billion caps and stems. Or Warren Buffet pulling out a couple thousand mushrooms out of the atm.

I know this was filmed in 2019, but watching people hug, stand close to each other and all the other touching stuff is so confusing to see during Corona time.
That ferry trip looked pretty fun to me. I’d do that any day over flying.

The irony of complaining how oil rigs are ruining everything, whilst on a “green” trip to Europe on a DIESEL ferry burning between 3-5 TON of fuel PER HOUR, for 20 HOURS! 🤣🤣
Probably burning Bunker C oil. Seriously toxic sludge
It's about the ecological impact per person, you won't be comparing the impact of one car with that of one plane (that have totally different capacities). By the way a single plane also burns tons of fuel.
If they'd have gotten a ferry from Harwich to The Hook of Holland it would have only taken them 6 and half hours.
sharefactor The point is that it would be better to go by plane.

Even for Vice, this video is so out of touch with reality.

“What if they started turning to things that actually, you know, have value like mushrooms.” Shrooms r cool, but idk about that one!
They have a lot of value for some people, just not for every one
Look into paul stamets' work, fungi are the building blocks for healthy micro-ecosystems and are also one of the oldest and longest surviving multi-cellular organisms on the planet. I'd say they have value beyond wigging you out and I think the guide understands that.
the most frustrating part about psychedelics is that you're so supremely alone in this experience, since words can never adequately describe what's going on.
Whats frustrating is trying to explain your tripping experience to someone who's completely sober..
It's much easier to explain everything you experience to someone else who is tripping with you.
These two are acting like they’re “roughing it” and doing it for a good reason when in reality they’re so out of touch and still completely surrounded by people. 😂
Let’s not forget these two morons think the ship they rode on is fueled by fairy dust and coconuts. While mocking the oil drill rig they pass by
Yes they are surrounded by people but it is not as bad as being in a sealed plane and the carbon emissions aren’t nearly as bad as being on a plane
@@RViscara Travelling by plane is way worse then by boat, but I get your point. No need for name calling, it detracts from your argument.
@@1981menso no it legitimately isn't, planes use extremely efficient and high quality oil and on average use less oil to fly the same distance as a boat sails. As an example, the Queen Mary 2 gets 8.7 km per liter per passenger while an airbus a380 gets 31 km per litre per passenger. Furthermore the oil used by boats are of extremely low quality in comparison to even diesel, this means that the emissions are far worse. All in all planes use less and more higher quality oil than boats leading to a lessened effect on the environment. Ill agree planes affect the environment heavily, its just that boats are much worse.
@@heavybolter6396 thats just plain wrong. A ship (at least at reasonable speeds and not 35 knots) is ALWAYS more efficient

i would never do it, but i enjoyed watching your journey on RUclips! very cool guys!
As a 24 year psychonaut space cadet, I feel moved to write something here after hearing the truffle "guide" (asian guy) going on about, think how wonderful it might be if we devalued the dollar and people traded things with intrinsic worth? (I know I am paraphrasing, but think I got the gist). This is an idea being passed around a lot by fellow Earth wanderers, especially in the West lately. I implore you to read and learn history, because the ideas you think are so unique and amazing, are very old actually. Going back to a trading system, where in order to acquire the good you need (food, medicine, etc) you need to have the good that the other person wants, in order to have successful trade, aka. commerce. Gone will be the days of going 1 place and being able to get everything you need in a short time, and then use standard recognized currency to get everything you need. Instead you will seek out each vendor, and then need to find things they may need in order to acquire the goods you need. I know this is very simple, but it seems lately to have escaped the thought processes of the future enlightened. There is much to consider in life, but not every idea is a good one. You must have wisdom to think ahead and see the path you are on, which normally only comes with age, or intense study from childhood. Going backwards to a trading system, is regressive, and will only cause hardship for everyone.
I'm not sure if this is a dream come true or a nightmare

This is nicely made.... short but very entertaining and educational and funny 😄
This is pretty sustainable when you think about the fact that the majority of people won’t be able to travel internationally like this
What like the people who work to support these kind of people.
I would hope that if we can think of alternate ways to travel we can then think of ways to make that travel affordable.
Trains are hilariously expensive, as are coaches and ferries.
If we can somehow get airfair within UK to Europe to the £20 mark then we can do the same for more ecologically sustainable transport.
asd asd exactly i know many working class people and a lot of first generation immigrants who are not able to travel like this
Fucking AWESOME!!! I can’t wait to see MORE of this series 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
"The main way we can reduce emissions is by flying less." What?!?
Aviation accounts for 2% of humanity's CO2 output. So no, there are many superior ways to reduce emissions.
The consumer can definitely reduce a LOT of their personal footprint by flying less
Considering aviation is a source of travel that most people only use once or twice a year, accounting for 2% is pretty considerable.
@@morgogs if you travelled once a year (so 2 flights), 2 days out of 365 is ~0.5% of the year. So you're only using 4x much as a normal day when you fly if it counts for 2%. that's not THAT bad considering you're travelling thousands times further than usual. way better to not drive
@@AlexRoseGames
How about just don't go 15000ks for a holiday.
@@AlexRoseGames aviation is 2% of all CO2, not 2% of travel. I believe it's 13% of all travel.
Really we should be comparing CO2 emissions/km. A car with one person in it still emits less than a long haul flight, as soon as you add more passengers it falls much lower, and that's just in a conventional ICE car. Something like a Eurostar train emits a tiny fraction of the CO2/km.
If you're in London, why would you travel from Newcastle to Holland when you could go from Harwich to Hook of Holland? You've already racked up some more carbon points from that pretty big deviation..

Wow that comment about his orchestra and him saying the planes just ruin it. Anything they can say about planes being bad is all I heard from them. Then talking about how everyone should take boats and how they just need better dj lineups and more people would take them. I'd like to see the statistics on if people drove places instead of flying, how many cars would it take to pass the pollution or carbon footprint of those people if they had just taken a plane.
Edit: I'd really like to hear what people think about this and if they have any more information about this.
I think we should kiss

www.bbc.com/news/amp/science-environment-49349566
Carbon footprint of an average diesel car with 4 passengers is 43gr/km per passenger compared to roughly 110gr/km per passenger for a flight (double that if you consider the secondary effects from high altitude non-co2 emmisions). Note that most cars don't have four passengers and don't rely on diesel so this is assuming the best case scenario for a car. To answer your question: in a full diesel car, it would take roughly 3 cars to surpass the carbon footprint per km per passenger. Driving solo? Then one would emit the same amount of co2, if not more, as a flying passenger (not considering non-co2 emmisions that also contribute to global warming).
