    At least people have more than two months to make contingency plans for long term 24/7 construction. There's no gain without some pain and to do major repairs a lot of times requires a full shutdown. Summer is the busiest time for the A train in Far Rockaway because that's when beach goers use the line to get to the Rockaways. They have to make sure the line is in good shape for summer 2025.

      @@dmoney8602 Maybe some people have the option to work from home. They have plenty of notice over what will be a long term shutdown. There’s no gain without some pain. I live close to the Far Rockaway branch on the LIRR so hopefully we will get increased service during this four month project.

      That will imply discounted rides, and the last thing the MTA needs is an uproar from wealthy commuters who pay full monthly fare, plus parking at their respective stations. They don’t want their lines turning into Canarsie-Rockaway station.

    I used to live in FAR ROCKAWAY and it's going to be a bitch .
    Now here me out for a minute , what if the LIRR were to add more trains and offer the residents of The Rockaways a discounted fare ? That would cut down on the Shuttle traffic and maybe help things run a little smoother .

    For people reaching Howard Beach from Manhattan, at least those riders aren't affected. But damn it really sucks that we will have no subways in and out of the Rockaways for 5 whole months. But the MTA did pick the right months to do this given this will be all done before the Beach Goers need service.

      There is never a good time to close a line for long periods. The damages from hurricane Sandy were huge and expensive to repair so it was done by order of urgency and available funds. A similar, but much larger, project will start on November 11 with the renovation of the East River Tunnel from damages of the same hurricane. this will last about 4 years and will reduce traffic capacity, which is why train services from Albany will be reduced for the duration of the project.
      as for the time, there is never a good time to closed down important infrastructure for long durations, in the winter it's cold and in the summer it's hot and humid. They can open up the station for people waiting for the shuttle buses.

    I wonder if the wooden trestle under the tracks fill, visible in the shot at 1:01 is what they're looking to replace. If that trestle (how the original LIRR Rockaway line was built) is still there buried under the tracks post-Sandy, it _would_ be a liability in the next big storm to roll through. So, it _sounds_ like the most likely candidate for removal and replacement with something more secure, like rock (not gravel) fill and then replace the track atop that.

      Having a car comes with its own set of issues if you’re traveling within most of NYC, especially Manhattan. You can’t find parking in many places. If you do find parking, many places require you to pay. There’s traffic as well, depending on the area. Also, adding more cars adds more pollution to the air. They have the Rockaway Ferry boat but not a lot of people take it because of the time convenience

    • @HughCorbyCruick
      @HughCorbyCruick 2 месяца назад +3

      It would take longer, as they have to go around Broad Channel.

      @@vincentperratore4395 on top of that the boat is on the other side of the Rockaway, people would have to take a bus and then the boat. Plus the Ferry only stops at wall st Pier 11. A lot of transfers would have to be made to get to peoples destinations

      Who wants to go swimming on the beach in January anyway, except for the Polar Bear Club and they can use the asylum's staff cars to get there anyway!

      Not sure if this is a joke or not but the reason they take the subway is because it’s either the most convenient or they don’t have a car. So this is something that can be a hindrance to many people.
