👆 Before you buy your next modelling amp, you must watch this video!
We discuss & demo the best selling modelling amps of 2016/17, and whilst we focus on some of the bigger modelling amps, you can also use this video to help you decide which of the smaller modelling amps would suit you too. We programmed each amp to get us our favourite clean tone, break up tone & hi gain tone.
And once you've decided which one you like the best, do us a favour & buy it from here :) www.andertons....

We don't use any pedals in this video - all the sounds you hear are from the amp, using the FX that are built in to that amp. The amps are mic'd up using the same mics & we don't process the audio to make anything sound better than it really is. If you're wondering why we didn't include amps like Orange Crush or Marshall MG, its because they aren't digital modelling amps.
Thanks for watching & please comment which amps you liked best & why.
Cheers
Rabea & Pete

Samuel Deroubaix grazie
I corrected one. Would you be kind and tell me the others mistakes? (But politely this time, PLEASE). Or, feel free to copy my comment, then correct the wrong timings that you've spotted, and past it. That would be more interresting than being insulting, You impolite man. Holy crap that strat is gorgeous.

Ironically for a company who's amps are synonymous with driven tones, the Marshall had my favourite clean tones.
Agreed.
It seems to be recorded the loudest
It doesn't even look like Pete touches the strings when he plays. So smooth and a pleasure to listen to.
This is by far one of the best reviews Andertons has ever made. Why? Because: it is simple, it goes straight to the point, gives enough information, the amps compared are fair enough, and you put two great guitarrists that play two different styles using two different styles of pickups and guitars. It is really helpful. Great work guys!
Of ALL of the People who do this, I would have have to say that you guys are the best. You actually have genuine reactions to each and every amp in different ways plus you actually realistically go over pro’s and con’s of each amp. You all really helped and assisted me in narrowing my search down. Keep on keeping on
Right! It gave me an opportunity to hear them on and make my mind up.
I recently purchased a VOX VT40X and I couldn't be happier with it. I tried out a few of these amps in store and found this to be the best sounding with the most options.
I ended up going with the vt20x. It's plenty loud enough and tons of features. Also I love the vox look
Tone libary thing isn't on android otherwise it would be a no brainer
Very informative. Always casting all of Andertons video to my living room TV to see what ya'll have for us. You guys help out the guitarist community a lot. Thank you guys and keep it up.
I think the VOX sounded the most tube like. Its the best all around. Love the Tone Room App that it comes with as well.
Just got mine, amazingly close to an All-tube Vox.. Tried both side by side
@@BladeDoomer86 Awesome, I've just ordered one. Looking forward to it :D
@@formulajuan5762 Great! Subscribe to the Facebook group too, you'll find a lot of info there. Also, did you try it first? It's always a good idea before buying an amp, so many choices!
VT or AV I cant decide and have no dealer close by to try any. Any suggestions??
@@kip_san VT by far. The AV was a big big disappointment. The gain channels on that amp are horrible.
The only modeling amp they don't talk about and might be the best in the Peavey Vypyr VIP2. It's certainly the best for high gain. Also the Positive Grid Spark. I got mine in two weeks. Not sure why everyone else has had to wait.
Now that's how a Review should be done . 2 guitars that are polar opposites of each other. starting out soft and kicking it up a notch each step up. . I'am in the market for an amp in that size and a PRS. I got the most out of this review. Thanks Guys . 2 thumbs UP.
I'm impressed that you guys still play extremely well after a full day of shooting video.
I run a Vox amps group on Facebook and the VT vs AC debate comes up about once a month. I own an AC30C2 and an AC4C1-12. So I don't have much information to offer about the VT line. I shared this video in my group because, 1) you guys always do a great job of getting a good tone from the amp to be captured and recorded for the video. 2) you guys always have excellent information about the product.
This video will be watched by a lot of members of the group, and will answer a lot of the questions they might have.

Love hearing these guys just noodling around. Loads of talent between the two of them.
Great vid, guys. Very informative. Not gonna lie, though. I prefer when you're each give your pick and explain why in these shootouts.
Have been a long-time user of vox vt40, but that fender made me think about my life...
The Fender is surprisingly good. I've had it for a while. I don't gig it but I do take it to practice and play it frequently at home. Very good amp. The Fender cleans are superb. The overdrive.... meh expect for the super sonic model. The super sonic model actually kicks serious ass.
Just bought the vt40x, but the fender superchamp x2 was a very close call.. If you're still looking for a new amp, try it in store, very cool tube amp
I wish the demo on the fender Mustang (clean) didn't end. truly blissful.
You are making my Modeling Amp Choices so, so much easier. I believe that I have watched and listened to you two at least three times easily narrowing down my choices. Almost there. Watching all the good parts at least one more time...
Rabeas an amazing player, but Pete is a fucking monster! Where does he get these endless streams of licks and orogressions? Amazing, genuinely amazing
He has easily become one of my favorite guitarists.
Fascinating. Katana, Blackstar and Line 6 are really good. The rest sound like toys.
I've been perfectly happy with the Fender Mustang I got when they first came out. It certainly won't replace any of my tube amps but it's great for gigs. Well worth the money IMO.
Great video guys. Thumbs up.
Hi Bea,
Hi Pete.
was about to say the same
was about to reply the same

What boring comments zzzz
These guys play so well that if you can get a sound out it then they can make it work. Just goes to prove that it's always more about the hands of the player.

I love my Marshall Code 50! I returned the first one because I did not understand how to set it up. I hated that amp! The second one is exactly the same so I spent time figuring out how to use it. At first I hated it too! But after spending time learning how to set it up I now have the best clean sound that I have ever heard and it comes out of my Marshall Code 50. I am thinking about getting another one for stereo. Either that or the 100 watt head ans 4 x 12 cab. I'm sure the Code 50 will hold up it's end in a stereo configuration with the 100 watt head and 4 x 12 cab.
I also love the JCM 800 sound from the Code 50. I had for many years a hot rodded JCM 900 with a Full Stack of 1960A and 1960B cab's. The Code 50 set to JCM 800 is real close and that coming from a $250 amp is amazing.
I like my Code 50 so much that even though I am addicted to shopping for another new amp I can't bring myself to purchase one because I have my trusty Marshall Code 50, which I know sounds better.
About a month ago - after much deliberation and careful vetting - I pulled the trigger on the Boss Katana 100 1x12". For me, it came down to the Boss vs. the Blackstar ID:60 TVP...in the end, I decided to save the $170 USD and roll with the Boss. I couldn't be more pleased with my choice. The Boss, while deceptively simple at first glance, can be *just as deep and tweaky* as any of the other amps, once you hook up the Tone Studio software via USB. However, if you *want* to keep it straightforward, the physical control panel is the most elegant and no-nonsense of any digital amp out there. Additionally, the EQ, Presence and Gain controls are incredibly sensitive and can dramatically alter the tone just by themselves.
This is an awesome video comparo, which definitely reinforces my decision to rock the Katana! Kudos to Rabea and Danish Pete for the tasteful playing/demoing of each unit! Cheers!
How's it holding up two years later? Would you buy one again if you had to?
Rohan Jangam I’d be interested to know. I just bought the exact same and very happy with it.
One of the best videos on this channel. Well done lads
You guys seem like the coolest bunch to hang with! Pete has such a great unique sound when he plays, it makes you want to listen for hours! I would absolutely love to come visit Anderton's given the chance. Even though I live in the U.S., I would take the time to fly over!
As always, you guys are killing it. Thanks this was useful and fun.
BEST. SHOOTOUT. EVER!!!!!! Bea and Pete are so damn good and funny!! Cheers guys!
Jake Adelman Thank you Jake. And you are very welcome. P
The Blackstar Core...friggin awesome. Tracked one down when they first came out because I love my Fly 3 and Core 10 and REALLY liked it. It sounds really, really good, especially for the money.
the strat looks amazing.
Think especially the headstock looks amazing.
Blizzard Pearl, my P Bass, is the same colour. That sounds wicked too. ;-)
That's all right by me killer. Music makes the world, go around, Strats' make it sound so much, more Rock-n- Roll. Peace and Love.
I have owned a Mexican Strat since 2008 and I have never felt shortchanged.
Never wanted to upgrade the pickups, tuners, trem....
Just a great guitar.
joe jefferson you can't blame someone for not owning an American strats. In terms of value mexis are superior
Ok. This what I was waiting for. I'm going with the Katana.
Did you get it? Tell me what you think about it?
Rohan Jangam I bought 100 watt head and matching cab about a month ago. Very happy with it, it’s a must to use the software that comes with it. Can totally sculpt your tone.
The Blackstar is doing a really good job.
I have to admit, I care nothing about the modeling amps, but I really enjoy watching Pete and Rabea together.
To my ear, the Code had the best clean tone with the Strat. Really gorgeous and lively. I have to get a Code as a backup to my DSL.
Thanx for that video. Pete & Rabea are really amazing guitarist, the chord progressions of Pete are amazing and the right hand of Rabea is killer. Thanx for all that great videos.
I have the VT40X and it is an absolute beast of an amp. It is so good
Bought it yesterday, I'm wowed.. Tried it next to a Vox 10w, and it sounds basically the same. Do you still have yours? Any complaints?
@@BladeDoomer86 No major complaints really. It would have been nice if it had build it Bluetooth for the toneroom app, but other than that it is a great amp. The people I jam with are always surprised about how good it sounds.
@@TheV857 it would have been nice to access to Tone room easier, I think it can be done through Ipad.. I'll give it a try
@Kev Musicluva another 40x owner here.... I‘m getting very valvey sounds out of mine. I. would have wished for a usb recording out but I‘m doing fine recording with break out cable from the headphone jack. One thing I will say: this amp comes alive when you turn OFF the global noise reduction a la manual, and then use it if at all only sparingly with for example the dirt or dist effects. It sounds much more valvey without it imo
@@mountainman8775 Definitely, noise reduction off. Been playing with Toneroom through my cell, wow.... Such a great amp
Been waiting for this video FOREVER! Thanks guys :DD
Pete plays the nicest chords. I need to get me some of those hands
Awesome video guys! Pete and Rabea are amazing, great demos and explanations for all of these amps! I would love to see a small tube amp shootout from you guys, something like 1×12 Tube combos. Another cool video would be an overdrive pedal shootout!
Pete/Rabea...great job. I know you said the object was not to say which one is the best but the last time Andertons did a shootout of modeling amps, Chappers and the Captain actually rated each amp on a number of qualities (sonics, feature set, portability, etc...) and came out with an overall rating and ultimately each of them laid down a marker and said which they preferred. I would think that would be a great part 2 to this shootout and very helpful for those of us trying to decide between the current slate of modeling/transistor amps.By the way, I would not call the Boss Katana amp as a modeling amp because it really has 4 different preamp channels and then a bunch of effects you can layer on but maybe that's a matter of semantics. Final aside, I had the Marshall Code 25 and hated it. Sounded tinny and majority of presets were gimmicky and awful.
Winner of the clean tones goes to the Vox. It also has some nice crunch tones as well. I think the ID Series TVP was the best sounding overall. Liked the Katana too, but the TVP was the winner.
6:12 - 6:48... Pete you're a FIEND!! Amazing!
I've been using a Blackstar ID Core Stereo 40 (at home only) and I just love the sound. The clean sound is very good and all the effects are quite usable. The delay is particularly well done. The only downsides: you can only store one set of parameters for each of the basic "voice" settings; also there is no real tone control on the amp (though one of the 2 clean voice settings emphasizes the treble). It's pretty amazing for such an inexpensive unit. The warm-clean tone setting is delicious.
I have the Boss Katana -50 1x12 Love it!
I bought a cheap and cheerful chord latching footswitch for about £10. It changes between CH1 and CH2 quite nicely so you can set them up as like a rhythm and lead channel and switch between them :) I love my Katana I dont have the neighbours for valves nor the time necessary to dial in tones and pedals. Turn Katana on pick a channel and add some effects!! Brilliant :)
Ya it's better than I thought it would be
Mark Daisley where did you get it
I've owned the Blackstar ID:260 tvp for quite a few years now and i loved it since day one. Just literally so many great tones and such a versatile amp. Great video guys!
aleh baba when was the update released?
Sean Ellis I LOVE the 260TVP. I'm not a digital amp guy, but when I played I was floored! I too didn't know about a new update, hell I can't even get my computer to recognize it when I connect it, so an update doesn't matter lol
Sean Ellis id260 is a cracking amp, i wont get rid of mine. its in a different league to any other modelling amps ive tried.
The Super Sonic amp model on the Fender Mustang is amazing! I'm using it instead of my Blues Jr!! Peace
Yes the super sonic model is the best one of the bunch on the Fender. It's very good.
Thats more like it guys , no OTT looning or heavy widdling about , good partnership and helpful comparisons of the different amps , lot to take in but it shows how very far these companies have come, not a duff one in the bunch .
Bea you look amazing :-)
You're wheight loss is incredible!!

Extremely impressed with the sounds of the Code.
Pete and Rabea are easily the best players on these channels. I'll watch them play anything with strings.
Funny watching this, as I just got my choice through the post yesterday..(sorry Andertons, this time from one of your German competitors...You just didn't have one in stock!!)
Anyways...last week or so..I watched all the reviews and read all the user manuals..
In the end I went for the Katana 100.....For its clean simplicity....and for me, the bonus of a dedicated acoustic amp..I'm pretty impressed so far....in fact I still haven't got past the acoustic channel!...greater things await methinks ;)
I have used the fender Mustang series for all of my guitar playing career (first the I, then upgraded to the III and then now on to the V for about a year) and I think for anything that doesn't know what "their sound" is yet then should totally buy the fender. I got to find my sound easily. sorry if it sounds like an advertisement. I just really like them and really want people to make the right choice in this.
Yeah seems like the Mustang is widely used among professionals as well. I was a at a gig last week where some guitar god I´ve never seen before also used this amp. And the tone he had was just brilliant.
yeah man, I have a Mustang V, and it's the best sounding amp I've heard... the cleans are just too beautiful
Don´t think it´s for me tho..the stuff I play is mostly crunchy/ hi-gain territory and I like marshall just way too much
Ryan mcmorris that's what I did. and it worked,I found my sound... I also found that I couldn't get it on my amp
Ryan mcmorris that's what I did. and it worked,I found my sound... I also found that I couldn't get it on my amp
This immediately goes to the top of the Andertons videos!!! Man! If I heard this at a music concert I'd be glad I had laid my money down! In addition to the very well done comparison (going through clean, crunch and high gain on both single coils and hum buckers) there is just some astonishing playing. Two great players going back and forth, each spurring the other on to new heights. Unbelievable! And unlike some videos that get stuck in high-gain mode only, this one covers everything from tasteful to lively, to set on fire!
Can someone tell me what books I have to study, what lessons I have to learn to sound like Danish Pete?
I trully LOVE his slow jazzy chops. Amazing vibe!
the danish voice accent is best achieved by speaking danish language as much as you can. Then mix this up with a sloppy brit speaking and you will get almost there sounding like danish Pete. Maybe a tongue piercing
will be helpfull...
I was so glad you put those bloopers in because when Rabea said that in the video I lost it and couldn’t believe y’all didn’t laugh. The bloopers were hilarious.
Y’all should do a 2020 version and include whatever’s new as well as PV!

Hard to place my #1 by listening online, however fantastic job guy's - great playing - Rabea showing his jazzy side, seems Pete's tasteful playing is rubbing off - all good.
Dang guys great job..for all those people that said the line 6 spider sounds like crap. I beg to differ after that demo.
The Katana was the winner for mine. Liked the Vox too.
adam872, I bought the Vox over the Katana after I tried them in person and played with both software. That's the two I had it narrowed down to. The Vox just had more options suited to my playing. I play metal of all kinds, and the Vox has a Diezel, a Dual Rec, a JCM, a evh 6505, and some others accessible through the tone room. It has a 12ax7 tube in the preamp that made it feel a bit more responsive to me. Took me a while to get my tones dialed in, but I absolutely love it after several months of use.
Same here. I've played both in the store and for me, the VOX clearly sounds better than the Katana in person. Seems like the VOX sounds better than videos in person and the Katana sounds worse... Through my ears anyway.
Let me guess, both were new...The Kat speakers are stiff as, when new and the bass response out of the box is better with the vox but the kat takes over after a few months..
P.s i play metal as well and use the bogner amp in the kat, for a fat, chnky sound..
The Vox sounds great to me, but I already ordered a Katana 100 lol. It does seem that the speakers require some breaking in though, I've seen tons of comments saying they were underwhelmed at first and then suddenly loved it one day.
@@jimjambananaslam3596 how do you like it now? :D
Really enjoy these two guys demos, nice to hear some clean tones also, great playing, keep up the great work..
Would've been nice of you guys to give an opinion, even a subjective one.
I was going to post this same comment. In past shootouts they've always offered their opinions, and I like that because they get to hear the actual amps in the room and we don't. RUclips's audio is decent, but its still compressed with a very low bitrate.
Exactly. Obviously they are not going to say that one is shit and we should absolutely buy the other one, but in the shootouts they usually say "I really like that one better" "This one is great for the money" etc.
Thx..no need to watch 50 min video without even an opinion.
Totally agree. Everyone can look up features and specs by himself. Pete and Rabea should have picked their personal favorite, otherwise a shoot-out doesn't make any sense.
Thank you for saving me 50 minutes!
Pete on the Marshall code ....clean...... He just has that touch .......That makes him such a great guitarist....Rabea...Now he is a completely different guitarist altogether...... Love watching both of them ..Great entertainment.......Thanx....
The most awesome kick ass modeling amp I've ever heard and I've tried a lot of them is the original Vox Valvetronix amp that was released alllllll the way back in the early 2000's. it's 120 watts. It has a built in power attenuator because it sound better when you get the pre amp tube cooking a bit just like a real tube amp. So if you turn it down to 10 watt mode you can crank up the volume and turn down the master volume hence it's really does sound quite tube-ish. It's got some of the best sounding built in effects I've ever heard. The distortion and overdrive sounds are excellent. I bought the amp for about $1500 new at the time. Had it ever since. It's pretty old now and breaks down once in a while. But I'm telling you this amp is the shit.
Jeffrey Haefner my old guitar teacher used one, it was literally the best amp ive heard under 3000.
juan alvarez right??? I show up to gigs with this thing and other guitarists look at me like I'm from another planet.
What would be the model number of one of those? I have an old Vox AD50VT, is that in the same range? I think it might be slightly newer.. I am looking to upgrade it to a Boss Katana.
Pete testing the nice sized box.... lovely!
The Vox VTX series is amazing, probably the modeling amp with the best sound (well, second to the Fender Super Champ)
Just bought the vt40x, but the superchamp x2 was amazing... I might have bought it if it had an attenuator! It's loud..
@@BladeDoomer86 no attenuator is the exact reason I sold mine lol
Got the Blackstar ID:30 after hearing you say that your Dad has it. I love the amp. Best and great demo guys. Thanks.
You guys are such great guitar players!
Fantastic video! Introduced me to other choices, I did not know some of these models were available. Keep up the great work guys!
the vox sounds the realest imo
That's cuz it has a tube in it, tried all of them and having a real tube in the preamp makes all the difference... Try a fender Superchamp x2 if you haven't, it sports 2 tubes!
Have recently got myself a Marshall Code 25 and it kicks ass. The only let down is the bluetooth connection. But the amp models are superb.
Boss katana for the win! It just sounds so smooth and full.
Nice video. Like the Katana and the spider as well. Blooppers were great at the end.
Awesome video guys!
I like Rabea's skils and his playing with clean tone. But you guy's can make any amp good sounding.
You guys need to do an Axe FX 2 vs Kemper vs Tube amp blindfold test. Not to see if you can tell the difference, but to see which you like more.
Thanks for the review. I would have liked a sample of each playing the same thing for comparison, but this is better than watching 5 or 6 30 minute videos
Please do a small tube amp shoot out. Bass Breaker, Blues Junoir, Vox Ac10, etc
Noah Hambayi the tweaker15 would crush all other options. Just saved you a video.
I like the vox. And marshall code. The sound out of that fender strat. Is so awesome. I love it. Id buy her in a heartbeat.
I really liked that Blackstart TVP amp the best. Im might be getting the 260 TVP 2x60-watt 2x12" Stereo Combo Amp
IMO, the top 3 finishers were Boss Katana. Blackstar ID60, and Fender Mustang 3, but all of these amps did well.
...ok maybe the Marshall gets last place but not by too much.
I cant pick a winner even though Ill be grabbing a Katana soon. I think that the top 3 were so close that its impossible to call.
Modeling marches on, and our choices just keep getting sweeter.
We are very lucky!
oh man that Blackstar never disappoints..
Really enjoy these videos featuring the enigmatic Bea, such a gifted well rounded authentic individual/guitar player with such a great ear. For demonstration purposes, his style and demeanour offers so much . Great presenter, great musician, remarkably versatile guitar player who really stands out.
Blackstar ID TVP and Boss Katana are the winners on this one
chrisMusick. Asan owner of the TVP I can honestly say one of the best modeling amps I have played around with.
Yes, and the order was interesting. At first, the Vox and the Fender sound okay, then they played the Katana and it was so much better. And the Blackstars were on the same level.
chrisMusick My band mate, and lead guitarist, has the TVP, and I've just got my Katana 100 1x12. We've not had a band practise with both together, but last week I took the Katana to band practise and to my relief it was well capable of keeping up with the drums and the Frender twin reverb of the studio. I think the TVP and Katana are a good match for the occasional pub venue gigs our band plays, and I'm not going miss lugging my very heavy vox 2x 10 vt100 in and out of pubs. The clean sounds on Katana are really good, and it takes an overdrive pedal better than the Vox does. The Katana is also about £150 less expensive than TVP 60 w. I'm happy!
Katana rocks - it's a whole new level and should really not even be in the same room as most of these other shitty amps for pure tone and performance.
Richard Clark I totally agree. Anderton's obviously still need to sell the other amps which is why they are trying to be diplomatic. There is really no contest. The Boss Katana is in a completely different league and not even a modeling amp per se.
Andertons has some of the best videos out there.
Great sitting on the fence video. The truth is they are not created equal. If you really value tone above all else then the Boss Katana 100 is completely and utterly head and shoulders above all the others. In fact the only other amp that even comes close is the Blackstar ID60 TVP. However when you factor in the price there is not a single person who will listen to both and buy the Blackstar.
A guitar duel and an amp shootout. Awesomely great video, as usual.
Winner for me was the Vox, very close to a tube sound, not artificial sounding. And my goodness I don't get the love for the Katana. The cleans are very good, but the overdrive and distortion channels sound really artificial.
Some of us would even like to get inside em all. Great Job guys!
Can't wait to receive my Boss Katana 100 tomorrow!
But I have university exams for the next 2 days! :(
How's your katana holding up? I'd there anything you'd like to tell someone about it before they buy one?
Such an enjoyable time watching you two play! holy crap.
I also wish you'd give your thoughts about each one - I find that very entertaining and helpful to compare my own views etc.
@34:00 when Rabea is talking about insider you can see Pete grinning behind his mug. Best part of the whole video
sounds like you didn't see the very end of the vid for the outtakes :)
Danish Petes strat is sweet! Looks awesome!
I think the mic was overloading on the Marshall, shame I have one and it sounds outstanding, I love the plexi model
My first amp was a cheap vox modeling amp (VT 15), I swear by vox now. If something happened to my AC15 I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat, the tele + vox combo is killer.
Just bought a vt40x and it sounds killer with my les paul.. Might buy a Strat one day..
Please do a shoot out of mid priced guitars such as PRS SE, Chapman, Some of the Gibson stuffs, Ibanez, Fenders etc.
Basim Saif I doubt that they would give an honest opinion. chappers does own chapman guutars
Thanks! Exactly what I wanted to see! Great video.
