The first time I came across this subject discussed at length, was by Dr. Udo Erasmus PhD., in his book Fats that Heal and Fats that Kill. His interest in fatty acids started after he became poisoned by pesticides and looked to diet to regain his health. It is over 400 pages long with a very detailed bibliography. He to discuses ratios in diets and the difficulty with determining the right proportions and sources for one’s own diet. He also explains the importance of oils being fresh and the dangers of old oils. Best and worst fatty acids for cooking etc., etc.
Excellent. Glad you covered this. I got flax seed oil and fish oil to balance off my olive oil for a better Omega 6 to 3 ratio. Its supposed to be good for those with auto immune conditions.
Could you please go over oxidation in vegetable oils / seed oils. Would love to know more about the good and bad of linoleic acid too. Thank you for doing this video, please do more like this!
Typical store-bought grain-fed beef has an Omega-6 to 3 ratio of 20:1. Grass-fed beef has a ratio closer to 3:1, well within the 4:1 guidelines of a standard healthy diet. Replacing grain-fed for grass-fed beef in your diet will certainly help to balance the ratio.
Not if you are eating feedlot beef or especially commercial chicken, they will have high 6:3 ratios. In addition greens/fruits have balanced ratios of short chain 3s and 6s as well as serving as prebiotics to support healthy gut bugs that convert short chain 3s to long chain 3s.
I'm late to "the game" on this video but this explains why when people go on an LCHF diet/lifestyle, ached & pains either are reduced greatly or disappear amongst other chronic conditions.
Thanks Drbeen. I take 500EPA, 250DHA, and let the Omega-6 chips fall where they may eating whole food. Instead of A-LA I read that R-LA is used by the body better.
If this topic interest you, please also watch Simon Hill's presentation on Omega 3s. Summary - 1. Get tested - for $50 you get a finger prick test that will tell you your O3 ration. 90% of people are below 5%. Ideal is 8-12%. 2 - You almost can't get it from food alone. You need to eat salmon about 2x per day to get enough. Hemp, Chia, Flax are good but don't raise ratios. 3 - You have to supplement. Not with fish oil. A large % is rancid and it only adds to inflammation and you get fish burps. Get the algae based Omega 3. There is an independent pay-for-service company that tests all the ones on the market. He identified the one brand that agency deemed 'safe". It's a brand they sell at Costco for $50 for 3 month supply. Get tested again after 6 months and BINGO, you will be between 8-12%. Good to go.
I‘m just trying to keep eating simple* and balanced:), keeps me the most healthy. I feel strong and energetic. I‘m never going to an extreme with eating, not leaving away anything, no carbs avoided, no fat avoided etc.,but nothing in masses either. And I‘m fasting every few months, leaving away all except water, sometimes adding tea ( no black or green, always unsweetend as I don‘t like sweet drinks anyway but I think for fasting it would be like taking in nutrients if I added sugar so it wouldn‘t make sense either) My mom is kind of a fat phobic and I don‘t like her avoiding fat so strictly, I think it‘s harmful but she‘s very stubborn:( I‘m convinced she‘d benefit from a change of her habits. But it‘s her choice, so I stopped pushing her. With simple I mean fresh, unprocessed, adding as little as possible when I cook and I don‘t eat meat replacements, I think they are extremely processed and I‘m no fan of any heavily pushed trend, not buying the promoted benefits. Sorry industry;))
What about idea that both should be kept low as they are both much more subject to oxidation than saturated and monounsaturated fat. Omega 3s much more t risk of lipid oxidation than 6s due to number of bonds?
It depends on the body habitus. A chronically inflamed individual will strive to reduce omega 6 and increase omega 3, etc. These are essential fatty acids and are needed for brain, heart, blood vessel, cell membrane fluidity, etc. I understand your point of keeping them low, however, we are talking about the cell membrane need.
In real world, you always get more than enough Omega-6 from your diet, whatever you do; so there is no need to get any extra Omega-6 on top of it, ever. Avoid any seed oils all together. Then you'll only have to manage Omega-3 levels, preferably with some wild fish, or at least supplementing with quality fish or algea oil according to your requirements.
Interesting topic. I’ve read papers and books on Native American and diff indigenous population diets world wide pre colonialism. They were closer to 1:1. Diets incl wild game and fish meat (and organ vs muscle), fish eggs vs domestic poultry, wild greens and flowers, nuts, fruit and for many grain incl corn. Hominy is dried maize (corn) kernels treated w/an alkali for nixtamalization to incr avail of nutrients incl amino acids. Those near water obv ate wild fish (fresh then dried or salted for storage) plus fresh marine oils but only for food vs sport or mass commercial. The studies and papers are insightful and show how much misinformation is out there. Peace and health Dr Mobeen and all. ✌️
Dr Mobeen, can you please discuss the additives in juice drinks. If the expiry date is beyond 3 days, then it shouldn't be labelled as Fresh, it probably has all sorts of preservatives, chemicals called E numbers which are used a stabiliers or to adjust flavour. The majority of these juices don't list these chemicals on their label. The FDA whose job it is to analyse and control the amount of food additives seem to be turning a blind eye. Please research this topic because it is dangerous from the amount of fructose, even though they state No Sugar Added which could mean that sweeteners are added. They have the audacity to claim that the drink is Organic, Biologically grown ingredients, no sugar or colouring, even fresh when the sell by date is 3 months. Please talk about this important issue because summer is coming and many people drink this by the gallon. These chemicals have the propensity to cause cancer especially the nitrates or benzoates in the preservatives. Greatful for all your hard work and enlightening, ppl not scientifically trained. Always love your lectures.
This video did not address how it’s even possible to determine what the balance of Omega 6 to 3 is in an individual and how to address what is necessary to achieve a balance. I would surmise that the answer could be just eat more omega 3, but could that be overdone for some. Therefore the value of this video is null, anybody who is listening likely already knows about Omega 6 to 3 ratio.
You are quite wrong. I have rheumatoid arthritis and this information is so helpful for me. We are not all medics. Dr Been has been supplying me with information that I can trust for decades.
The way you explain this concept is very helpful and easy to visualize. Thank you!😊
My pleasure.
Liking-in with a hello to @Drbeen Medical Lectures and all KoolBeens!!
Thank you
This video is great! VERY informative. Will your next video discuss differences in omega3 sources, and ideal ratios of DHA to EPA?
Will do.

Yes for sure I started taking his Udo's choice in the 80's then switched to the omega from fish oil
Dr Been? Would you delve into the topics of thyroid disorders and Fibromyalgia some time?
Yes. Will do.
@@DrBeenMedicalLecturesthank you and chronic fatigue syndrome also please. Both similar.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
So shall we just stop taking Omega 6 if our body is acutely or chronically inflamed?
When does the body actually need Omega 6?
Women usually take this for mensturation problems.
Thank you, Dr.Syed 🙏 I was wondering about this topic and here you come with the answer ❤
You are welcome.

amazing video that should be given in medical schools.
Awesome subject ♥️
Thank you.
And beautiful pictures ❤@@DrBeenMedicalLectures
I am thinking from this that I am right to only supplement when I feel "off" instead of everyday.
Omega 3 are important to keep high.

Drbeen, I think it's worth mentioning the role of Olive oil as well (Omega 9)
Will discuss in the future talks.
Thank you. 😊
As crazy as carnivore sounds; on top of all the other benefits, your omega-3 to omega-6 ratio will automatically become ideal.

Talked about some of it yesterday.
Even better is to combine Olive oil (Omega 9) with K2 mk7 to clean the arteries and blood vessels
Where can I find that study ?
I mean the positive effect of Olive oil in eliminating the damage of Omega 6
Thank you. Whatabout the fat already storesd on our body? Is that static in the ratio as it was consumed or is it saturated made from sugar?

You'll be happy to know there's a blood test called OmegaCheck® that shouldn't be expensive.
I believe Genova has a test you can purchase which will breakdown your existing ratios
