All The Bells!

  • For the London 2012 Olympics, the "artist" Martin Creed "created" his "Work number 1147: All The Bells" which involved as many people as possible in the country to ring whatever bells they could lay their hands on, be it a doorbell, bicycle bell, handbell, church bell or any other bell you could think of "as loudly and as fast as possible" at 8.12am on the 27th July 2012; the opening day of the Olympic Games.
Even with the, in my opinion, ridiculous and antisocial timing, and the sheer practicalities of ringing church bells loud and fast (the former is easy, the latter not so!) a number of churches across the land rang out and gave their neighbours a rather unusual wake up call on this historic day.
Riddings, my home tower, rang out with its ten tubular bells being rung by myself and my Dad, with a handful of parishioners ringing handbells outside co-ordinated by my Mum. Later on, I will be ringing the Performance of Five Rings Triples at five different towers, also in celebration of the Olympics.
This is my RUclips contribution, which took longer than I expected to edit together (I only finished it last night!), and is slightly longer than the specified three minutes, but it includes, in order, almost every video I have on this channel at the time of upload and a couple of "sneak peeks" as well (guesses as to where they are below in the comments if you wish!).
Enjoy the cacophony of sound that is Martin Creed's "All The Bells!"

Although I completely disapprove of the "All the bells" project, I think this video is fascinating. It's (for me) a unique experience to listen to a great variety of bells. Some great editing, indeed. Finishing with "stand" being said was also pretty classy. Really good fun to watch.

1:25, ahhhh Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral. Largest, and heaviest set of twelve in the history of the British Empire, and the world. I swear I never tire of the beautiful sounds of the change bell ringing. Wonderfully done.

All your own videos, I believe? What a massive range of bells, in pretty much every aspect (size, key, number, tone, etc.). Think I spotted myself in about 4 different clips (Nottingham St. Mary, B'ham St. Philip's, B'ham St. Chad's, B'ham St. Paul's). I also think that I was edited out of some other clips, but don't mind.

Thank you for making this video. It has inspired me to make my own. every tower i have been to since I started ringing I have taken a video of myself ringing (someone else takes the video) and trimmed a whole pull of rounds. It sounds great, thank you for inspiring me

The bells I like the most are Birmingham (St Martin) and Leicester (St Margaret). It's amazing how they ring all 14 instead of the normal 12!

Indeed, all my own work! You may have been "missed out" of a few but as it was just one whole pull of each tower, bar the last, that I was using I obviously couldn't fit in all the ringers at each tower!

It just goes to show that there is great variety in rings of bells across the country, from the little village ones to big Cathedrals. it just so happened that I filmed the entire touch that the final clip is taken from, and it is to be uploaded soon...
