I have one of the older ones
It’s a beautiful blade and when I carry it it always puts a smile on my face and everyone around me when deployed
    It’s just fun 😃

    I have carried espada XL.
This thing is a pocket machete in all sense of the word. It's excellent for light chopping/ clear brush if you can't bring a machete. In this use, the original Aus8 and the aus10 versions make the most sense.
One thing though, I do not ever use the wave feature. It's too large to safely wave open and not also open your clothing. Instead I flick this open one handed as I do all cold steel folders over 4" in blade length. The blade is heavy enough to do that.

So where I live fixed blades cannot be concealed so this as a folder can be as there is no limit on how long the blade can be. Also I carry a pistol as well with this. But I get your point. I really do it just because I can.

I've never really understood the whole argument of *"if you need a weapon just buy a gun"*
Many worthwhile guns are not within the same price range of a knife and even then just concealed carry of a knife vs a firearm is vastly different especially if it activates unintentionally.
I completely agree with you on your assessment of knives as a self defense tool, no one wins in a knife fight however with one this large it definitely counts with intimidation factor. That's about the only positive I can give for its extreme size.

A couple points, within 20ft or less a knife is superior to a gun for a number of reasons, idiot thugs are usually too ignorant to know this because they never watched police training videos. Also, a knife requires less hassle and potential self harm imo than packing heat... I'm a huge dude and the huge knife seems to fit... It's either my Cold steel espada XL in my pocket, or my Von Tempsky Bowie against the booty. Then again there are bears and mountain lions where I like to hike so and for going fast, a gun is a hassle.

Hard to carry a big knife in public. Where as this knife can fit in your pocket. I carry this knife for self defense, and yes, in a knife fight you will get cut too. Unless, you pull this knife and scare the crap out of the other guy. I could carry a gun, but they are bulky and loud and if you pull a gun, you had better be ready to use it. A knife this size has Shock and Awe value. I love mine. As for being bulky yep, it is. Unwieldy, sure if your trying to do a small task, but for what it is meant to do, it is very handy, and multiple hand positions.,

I carry this in my side thigh-knee pocket where you are supposed to keep your Ruler for construction work.
Fits well I don't even feel in carrying it around afterall the pocket is designed for Rulers/levels. about 20 cms deep.

I've been training and teaching martial arts for over 50 years. I carry a knife daily. A few years ago, a man tried to carjack me. I pulled out a knife and flicked it open (3.75 inch Spyderco Endura). The fool quickly ran off. Yes. A gun is more effective. But in California, carrying a folding knife of any length is considered legal. For my purposes, it seems less inconvenient to carry a knife than to go through all of the red tape getting a concealed gun license. I have other experiences where I deterred crazy people with my knife. People who want to protect themselves must be cognizant that there are cameras and people with smart phones who capture images of fights, etc. I'm a senior citizen. That gives me a slight leeway. But, what if I had pulled a gun to prevent some of these encounters? It might look a bit excessive. There are no easy answers these days.

You only pull this knife, if some one pulls a knife on you. Self Defense! As for carrying a gun. If your carrying a concealed firearm, it can be hard to get too when you need it most. This knife fits in your pocket and can be deployed quickly with the thumb plate.

What type of bits do you need to take it apart? I figured it out. A No. 10 torx for the pivot bolt, and a No. 6 for the smaller screws.

There is no legitimate reason to have this knife, therefore it’s on my wishlist. Love this thing for the sheer audacity of its makers.

I have both...and they're great! The Mayhem edges out the Espada for me in terms of usefulness. I have knives with Tri-Ad locks, Shark locks, Super locks, Abel locks, Scorpion locks, and Axis locks. All are very good and very strong...but the atlas lock is my favorite. It has all of the strengths of the other good locks with none of their weaknesses, and it turns the Mayhem's behemoth blade into a practical, carriable, fidgety, fast deploying EDC wonder!! However...having said that...NOTHING in knifedom equals the Espada's XL's intimidation and coolness factor! 😊
