Why your Raspberry Pi is running SO SLOW!

  • Many people use phone chargers to power their Raspberry Pi's and usually don't know that their Pi may be running slow.
    In this video I investigate into the matter.

    I enjoyed your video, but it doesn't solve my problem. I have two Raspberry Pi 4's (8gb and 2gb) and they are both running slowly (kind of like an old machine that doesn't have enough ram).
    Issues:
    1. Running super slow
    2. Screen Tearing
    3. CPU is maxed by almost nothing
    I have tried:
    3 Power Supplies
    1. (5.25v 3a) Argon
    2. (5v 2a) Cannakit
    3.phone charger (5v 2.5a)
    3 Operating systems (all fully updated):
    Rasberry Pi OS (latest)
    Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
    Ubuntu Mate (latest)
    Overclocked (Argon One case, safe temps):
    6v
    2.147ghz cpu
    750mhz gpu
    I also have run it at stock, 1.7ghz, 2.0ghz. Same issues
    Different data mediums:
    1. Samsung Evo (Class 10 UHS) 128GB
    2. Other fast micro SD's, Sandisk ETC.
    3. PNY USB 3.0 drive (64gb)
    I made sure that both Pi's have the latest firmware
    Powered USB Hub, the Raspberry Pi4's are only powering themselves
    Directly connected Ethernet
    I have fully updated the firmware on both units and I installed all OS updates for each OS.
    In every instance, the OS runs very slowly. The CPU is maxed out by opening a browser (on both machines). There is one exception, RetroPie runs just fine, it seems to run at full speed. Am I over looking something stupid?

      That's super weird, doesn't seem like you're overlooking something.
      I've had a great experience with the Pi 4, noticibly snappier than the Pi 3.
      Run a few benchmarks(CPU/GPU etc) and compare with others online, maybe it'll give some insight.

      @@chinmayshalawadi1 I just picked up a PI 4 Canakit (tested it today). I set it up for Wifi then ran it from VNC on my desktop Windows 10 computer.
      It was extremely slow (I was using 5ghz Wifi). I switched it over to 2.4 ghz Wifi connection from my router and it seems to work great. Currently in the process
      of running sudo apt full-upgrade to see if that helps. The power supply shipped with Canakit is a 3.5 amp per the description. I am not certain to go from here.

    The pi 4 8GB is slow running no matter what. They have low throughput, the highest speed DSI port is proprietary, and they are problematic running anything but pi os. They also are not very viable to run along with a discrete graphics card. Do not be fooled. I had to learn the hard way that these boards are not capable of any of the projects I had planned when I first laid my eyes on the unreal spec sheet.. It's a good ARM chip microcontroller, but definitely a terrible computer.

    It worked for me in this case, I have a raspberry pi4, ram 4G, I changed the charger and used it from my cellphone, also I used the cable from my cell phone, and It worked perfectly, I have to say it is a little faster, I can see the improvement, like.

    The explanation sounds logical, yet it does not solve my problem: On my Pi 4B, the undervoltage sign is being shown since the recent update of the OS, and now Chromium is running slow, even terribly slow when using RUclips (the power supply used has a nominal output of 3 A, but it is not the official one, instead it is the one shipped with the kit).
    So I bought an official Raspberry PSU, and with that one, the Pi 4B does not even boot anymore (!).
    The issues remain even when the additonal hardware is disconnected (2nd monitor, active speakers powered by Pi's USB).
    Honestly I don't understand this at all (both - that the issues occur after the recent update and that the orignal PSU does solve the issues).
    Am kind of helpless. Ideas welcome.

    • @chinmayshalawadi1
      @chinmayshalawadi1  3 года назад

      That sounds super weird, they may have changed the undervoltage threshold to be more agressive. I don't know why they would do that. It makes using 3rd party power adapter a nightmare.
      You sure you didn't get a faulty unit for the original PSU ?

    • @hennero.3826
      @hennero.3826 3 года назад

      @@chinmayshalawadi1 Thanks for your reply. No, I am not sure I didn't get a faulty unit for the original PSU, I have no means to measure this. For now, I am using the non-original PSU again. As the issues occur only since the recent update, I hope that it is merely a kind of software problem that becomes fixed in future updates - don't know if this hope is justified.

    I have the RPi 3 kit with the original power supply but the Pi is very slow. I tried LXDE, pure Openbox and even XFCE which should run smoothly but it’s terrible and basically opening web browser (lightweight Midori), terminal and file manager makes it unusable. I removed/purged all the packages I don’t need, so the OS is as clean as possible and it still doesn’t run smoothly and anything makes it unusable.

    • @syky145
      @syky145 3 года назад

      @@chinmayshalawadi1 I don’t believe I have faulty unit. I think something is wrong software wise. What I did was I set a ZRAM instead of swap and it helped a bit but it’s still not so good. I believe that for my project (temp measuring and log creation) it’s going to work just fine. I will try to dig deeper and see what I can do.

      It won't damage the Pi for the most part, but it won't run properly if voltage is below 4.5V.
      If it goes to 3V it might not turn on at all.
      By bootloop I mean that it will get stuck into a loop where it turns on and off continuously
