I actually thought the purpose of a death row inmate was to suffer dread under a state that doesn't care about their guilt or innocence and gives citizens peace of mind knowing this "potential menace to society" will be executed, preventing them from removing any further dou- I mean protect the society from an unjust person incapable of reform.

Regardless of my feelings on the death penalty, this was recently voted on and the people of California not only voted to keep it, but to speed up the process. Newsom also decided to add a water tax, even though the people voted against this as well. If the people have spoken, Newsom should respect that. If not ,what is the point of voting at all?

It's a great call. As much as the death penalty is warranted in many (obvious) cases if you have someone on death row and they Shouldn't be on that list the state has a due diligence to ensure that this individual is removed and if evidence exonerates them then they should be released.

Richard Allen Davis’ case activated the 3 strikes law, which has been noted one of California worst legislative decisions. A law which destroyed many families outside of that case (nonviolent 3 strikers) and Davis and many other serial killers get relief! and there’s still over 4,000 nonviolent 3 strikers sitting in overcrowded CA prisons because of that law without any retroactive post conviction relief. yet, we’re concerned about those who have committed unthinkable crimes against people, women and children, in particular. Whether the perpetrators are black, white, yellow or blue gives them no right to have done those things. If we’re worried about executing the innocent, Newsom has the power to open and investigate cases of those maintaining their innocence, and rule out those types of errors, but we can surely began executing the ones where evidence and confessions (not under duress) have shown guilt, I.e Davis and Peterson and the other scumbags who left families destroyed forever- now that’s immoral, that’s irreversible! Some inmates have spent decades on Death Row simply going through the formalities of courts and docs while sitting in a box... that’s were the taxpayers money is being wasted. Reprieve for Death Row? somebody get Brown on the phone!!

Because blacks are more likely to be convicted of a crime in a trial even if both cases are the same for a white person. A white person gets the benefit of the doubt, while a black person is more likely to be convicted, since the bias makes you suspect them of wrong doing more. Also the sentencing is much harsher on a black then on a white person.
Perry Ellis Wait a minute- that would make sense if the juries, lawyers, jailers, police, judges, lawmakers, etc. are all white. But they aren’t. The full color spectrum is represented in the judicial process and this is still the outcome. How does your answer still hold true?
@@joj2115 Most judges and juries are white. So what are you talking about. Also the judges hold the most power in determing sentencing. If you look at the stats, blacks get much longer sentencing for the same crime then whites. The last thing I would to say is, the prosecutor also has an effect on the charge and the type of deals they are willing to work with the counsel for the defense. If they have an implicit bias, they will only recomend a harsher sentence, while if they can relate to the defendent, they might be willing to be a little more leniant.

that being said, if more juries and judges are white (although to clump all members of a single jury into one color spectrum and ideology seems a bit simplistic and unfair) it’s because numbers-wise caucasians make up the bulk of the country’s population. BUT- that would also reflect in the districts where the black defendant is being tried (I.e. in a predominately black district the chances of having a [mostly] black jury, judge, arresting officer is much more likely than a black man being tried in a completely white county).
Also, implicit bias? I’m willing to agree with you on that if you bring actual evidence showing that racism is the determining factor in the mental process of people passing sentence.
Next, why are we giving ANYONE who is deserving of the death penalty (assuming that it is not being given out for petty offenses; rather rapists, murderers and the like) ANY leeway REGARDLESS of whether they share the same skin color as the person passing judgment?

Gavin is so full of BS, I'd be doing this every day... A judicial or executive official issues an execution warrant. It's done in trial court proceedings after they've been sentenced to death after a conviction or after appeals are exhausted.

Dear Governor Newson,
I truly admire your courage to take this decision. I am from Germany and I have a lot of great memories from a Highschool students exchange to Davis, California and several subsequent visits to friends in California.
You are absolutely right. Capital punishment is a barbaric practice that in no way should be contained in the penal code of any civilized nation.
Obviously there has to be serious punishment for people that have committed serious crimes - but the examples of many civilized countries in Europe shows that there are alternatives to capital punishment that are more humane and as effective. It is very obvious that taking this decision has not been easy for you to take, however, it certainly takes more personal strength to take such decision and abolish the death penalty compared to just signing death warrants and go on with business as usual. For many many years I was wondering if ever somebody will stand up and show empathy and humanity in the US .... you and your way of doing politics without bending to political pressure and with all your sense of reality and consideration can do so much more for your great nation than people like Trump will ever be able to contribute.
I congratulate you and I am absolutely sure that this decision of yours will make history and will lead America into a better future and a long time overdue change and amendment of the medieval practice of capital punishment to a modern and humane society. Please go on changing things to the better and do not allow political opponents to change you to the worse.

I always thought it was a bit peculiar that many Christians are in favor of the death penalty, when their savior was put to death on "false" charges.

The death penalty is NOT barbaric....but brutally murdering innocent victims is. We should never grant clemency to horrendous murderers. We should definitely help fix and improve the system, but we should NEVER remove it. Newsom is flat out wrong here.
